the big oops by cnn and fox

Yesterday, the big networks jumped in prematurely and reported that an arrest was made in Boston. 30 minutes later, they retracted. This makes me furious that the networks are so intent on getting the story "first", they are willing to broadcast mis-information. Their reckless behavior is inexcusable!

I think other news outlets did the same thing because I remember hearing and reading they made an arrest, but it wasn't on FOX or CNN.

A video of a man walking on a roof was circulating on the web, it was at the time of the explosions : I hope they get leads to an arrest, it seems like such an ominous task.

No, Tami...The tornado was one near Hennessey, Oklahoma in Garfield County. They just kept showing it over and over on CNN and Fox News, especially when it ripped apart the hog barn. Two OKC stations chase tornados in helicopters. Do they do that elsewhere? After the wedding reception last night--once I knew the storms had passed and all was OK--I laid down in that hotel bed and was asleep within minutes. I didn't realize it had been so stressfull! (Well, that PLUS the hotel reservations that were totally screwed up...*sigh*) I linked to a CNN story below, which also contains a link to video footage of it leveling the barn at the hog farm. A client brought the real deal of a Biedermeier style pedestal DR table into the shop for refinishing. It was massive. I never saw one that big before. I would just drool over it every time I was at the shop. Always commenting on it. Hoping that they would never return to pick it up. I think that was the reason Mr. Fox didn't even question me when I threw this at him at 6AM after I woke him up. Even after I told him how far he'd have to drive to pick it up. He just smiled and said no problem. He must have remembered.

I finally did a quick walk of the garden. The snow has melted a bit but it's still a hassle to get around. First of all - knock on wood but no deer tracks or damage so far. The first animal tracks I saw the day after the storm were foxes, so hopefully they were keeping the rabbits in check. No white winter coats around here, to help the little lop-eared monsters hide out! Big story this year for me is at lot of BLEs look worse than they otherwise would because of the relatively sudden cool down. For example Citrus 'Dunstan' seedling; I know for sure that in some years when we've gone down to "only" 10F, which is the case so far, it has looked completely undamaged. This year it looks somewhat haggard with maybe 30% leaf surface burning already. The foliage of Rhododendron augustinii 'Cerulean Mist', which, surprisingly has shown a bit of heat tolerance so far...certainly far better than any cinnabarina series plant...instead of gracefully turning red and falling off slowly throughout winter as usually happens, has just gone boiled-cabbage looking. A positive bit of rhodie news is the huge - for my current standards - R. decorum I moved with my tractor's FEL seems very unbothered by the winter so far. In the case of that one, I probably came out ahead with the prolonged spell of mild fall weather. It's about 40" X 48". And it will be interesting to see if the camellias that budded up far too early are able to produce any flowers in spring. I'll be sick if I mostly lose the display on 'Destiny' for a third year in a row. Other odd little thing I noticed, the winter twigs of Larix mastersiana have a stronger fragrance than Larix kaempferi. Somewhat paralleling the way various low elevation Japanese Abies are lacking in the fragrance department compared to their Chinese/Himalayan brethren.

The recklessness in the media these days is maddening. The rush to be first seems to be the only goal at times. The few times I've had inside knowledge of something that has made it into the media, the reports have been about 2/3 true and 1/3 untrue. It's made me so skeptical of everything I read or hear anymore. I pretty much stick to NPR, because I value their lack of sensation and slower pace.

I was watching MSNBC all day yesterday and they refused to jump on the bandwagon, saying that there were too many conflicting reports.

Al Sharpton sure was P.O.'d when CNN's John King reported that the suspect is a "dark-skinned man."

Isn't it silly when we watch the news but take it with a grain of salt.

They are terribly irresponsible even when they have the facts right. The other thing that I stopped watching for was because I don't want to hear the newscaster's opinions, attitudes or biases interspersed while they are delivering what is supposed to be news. Further loses credibility and professionalism, imo.

Al Sharpton, I have to change the channel from all his hysteria, lol. It would seem to me he does more harm than good, from what I have seen. Actually I don't watch the news much for the same reason.

I've been appalled by the news media since I was a little girl in elementary school, which was a long time ago, lol.

I agree with Bestyears. It's as if the reporters are walking all over each other to get the news out first, whether they've confirmed the reports or not. When I have observed something happen and then heard about it on the news, it was very different as reported. Frustrating.

A huge mistake was by the NY Post that ran the cover story of a wanted man who had nothing to do with the bombing at all and the poor guy suffered as a result. The media largely seems to have lost any sense of responsible reporting.

I saw that too. A 17 year old afraid to go out of his house because he was posted as the suspect.

I guess they need to be regulated. It's more like gossipers at work half the time.
