Howdie all and Happy Friday!!

Has this been the longest week ever??

Started out with a funeral, then many long days at work followed by my back acting up...Jeez Louise!!

But today the sun is shining and its warm out!

DD is coming home for spring break but its no break for her. Not only does she have a lot of packing to do in her room but on Tuesday she is having her wisdom teeth out.

She is an admitted cry baby to I took a few days off to tend to my little girl.

Drew has hit another rough patch in school. I just don't get it?? I mean he's really smart and savy but in school he just doesn't apply himself and as such he is floundering.

His last report card was aweful. They offer tutouring at school but I just found out he's been going to the school gym instead...Yea, he's grounded LOL!

Hope he can pull his grades up soom or college will not be an option for him.

Today we have a few more things to pack up...mostly odds and ends and our house will be official clutter free.

We have het the 4 month mark and it time we will have to reduce our price, I am not happy but thats the market.

Susie, sounds like you have a very busy weekend ahead. So glad you will get to spend time with your daughter!

Sorry to hear your house has not sold yet. Yep, the market is awful and I fear it will be for quite some time yet.

I am off today, and if I can get the snowblower to start I get to move the 6-8 inches of snow we got yesterday. It was still snowing and blowing when I went to bed last night, but it appears the worst is over. Well, except for clearing it out! LOL

I'll be happily clinking with something stronger than my morning coffee later on...

I agree, Susie, this week has been loooonnng. Work is very stressful so I am exhausted at the end of the day. I hope to get out of here on time today and I think I will go home and go directly to bed.

Wish I could be home, because as Susie said, we are having an oddly warm day. After losing two trees over the winter, I have tons of yard clean-up to do. See, Susie? Maybe you should stay in the city!

Since the economy forced the cancellation of my bathroom renovation, I am doing some less expensive fixes. I may go shopping for window treatments tomorrow.

Linda, I don't think I could deal with snow right now. You have my condolences. Ugh.

I also have to deal with some of my responsibilites for our local library tomorrow.

Last night was book club. We read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which won the Pulitzer Prize. None of us liked it! So I will get started on the next, Body Surfing by Anita Shreve.

So, clunk of my usual travel mug to you all and I hope your weekend is a good one.

Pea soup and ham sounds good, but I've been eating a lot of soup lately, as I have been under the weather since Wednesday of last week, which is why I did not post under TGIF last week. I'm much better now, probably at 95%, but I will still take it easy this week-end. It's gotten cool here (mid 60s) and I think we may have had rain last night, which might happen again this week-end, which would be wonderful. If I'm up to it, I will make tamales. I found corn husks at Sprout's, but they cost $5, which I found to be expensive. Last Saturday (when I should have stayed home), we went to what I thought was a Von's close to our house, but it is now a dollar (or 99 cent) store, and I guess corn husks are too expensive for them to carry! Before that we went to a grocery/liquor store that is even closer to our house, and its doors had been chained, as it is going through a change of ownership. The large recycling center in its parking lot was still open, however, but that was all that was going on. Kevin said that he had seen people who collect bottles and cans get vouchers for what they had collected and then used those vouchers to buy lottery tickets! I think they should have given them food stamps instead. There are too many dollar stores now, I think. The fruit and vegetable market that we used to go to is also now a dollar store. I will say that the dollar store that used to be a Von's is much cleaner than the Von's was, and I did not shop at the Von's because it was not very nice. It would be nice if a dollar store would reopen as a vegetable market. Maybe I'll make pizzas this week-end and put some of my Roma tomatoes on them. I've been mostly avoiding cheese while I was sick, as I think it makes congestion worse. I think I'll be fully recovered by tomorrow. I want to make something besides soup. I did make some very good cabbage soup while I was sick, and it was quick and easy and much better than I expected, although it did not have much of a cabbage flavor. I had Kimchee flavored soup yesterday. I turn the TV off whenever anything Superbowl comes on - it's just a lot of annoying noise as far as I'm concerned. Well, TGIF night, that's for sure. My day started out at 9 am on the farm. No water, the frost free spout is officially frozen. We took a 50 gallon barrel to Amanda's and filled it. 3 times. Back to the farm where we dipped it out with 5 gallon buckets and filled the tank. OK, time to set hay. Except the tractor won't start. We spend about an hour trying to jump start the tractor, give up and wrap a chain around a big round bale of hay and drag it out to the animals. One egg that wasn't frozen, hooray. On the way home, we lost power steering in the truck, apparently a bearing froze up on the tensioner pulley and the belt broke. If it had been warmer than 7F, with wind chills of about -20, the truck might have overheated. We limped it to Dave's, where he fixed it and we came home. Right now there are blizzard conditions and white outs and the wind is about 25 MPH. Did I mention that I woke up with a sore throat? Elery made chicken soup for supper and I'm sitting here with a cup of tea and a bag of Hall's cough drops. Tomorrow we go out and see if we can chop down through the frozen ground to find the problem with the water. The valve is 5 feet under ground, so we may or may not get that fixed. If not, we'll be hauling water in barrels for a couple of months. (sigh) Clink with my cup of Irish Breakfast tea, and think about me about 9 am tomorrow, out in the storm, using a pick ax to break frozen ground. Yes indeed, we farmers just sit on our butts and wait for that government subsidy, that's what we do. Annie

Still clear skies, mostly, but getting colder. The leaves are mostly down. I'm getting out the winter clothes and wrapping the backyard up for another Oregon rainy season. We are hoping for snow this year, after four years with hardly a trace. My son wants to build a microscope this weekend, so we'll do that. My daughter may want to go to the darkroom. I want to take one early morning and go for a bike ride. I might go explore some of the steep windy roads in the West Hill that lead to the zoo. Or just do laps up my local hill, less scenic but a more efficient workout. Sometimes I wear a heart rate monitor on these rides. Afterwards I can look at the data and see how my heart rate spiked when the road turned upwards or when the speed rose. The rule of thumb is that your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. I think that is bunkum, or at least that it varies so much between individuals that it is no rule at all. I have gotten my heart rate up to 200 beats/ minute, only for a few seconds, but those were exhilarating seconds. On a pretty routine basis, I ride at 170 bpm which is 85% of my max heart rate, or a. "submaximal" heart rate. There is a whole science of training by heart rate - you are supposed to spend X time at 80%+ of max, Y time at 60%, and so on. I don't pay attention to that. I just like to get up to 170 bpm frequently and see if anything untoward happens. It is kind of my personal security blanket. There is another test you can do, which is a little more useful. You get your heart rate up to 150 bpm or so, which might mean a few minutes of jumping jacks or chopping wood or running fast. Then stop, sit down, and see how long it takes for your heart rate to settle down to 100 bpm. It should only take one or two minutes. If your heart continues to beat at a high rate for much longer, that is a worrisome sign. This is called "recovery heart rate". Finally, there is "resting pulse". The true resting pulse is taken when you are laying down and completely relaxed. In the morning, right after waking up, is a good time. Some people have a high resting pulse, some a lower one. The interesting thing is how it changes. If you get serious about exercise, you can lower your resting pulse quite dramatically. That is a sign that your heart has become more efficient, which is a good thing. I've been thinking a lot about getting older. My kids are only teenagers, and I'm fifty. I don't know when they will have kids. When I have grandchildren, I want to take them riding and skiing and fishing. That means I will have to be strong and athletic into my seventies. Gulp. My dad had a heart attack in his mid seventies. My neighbor is seventy-five and has CHF and PAH. I've got a lot of work to do, anyway that is how it feels, so I get on the bike every day and push until it hurts. It actually is kind of pleasant to hurt. I think I've learned a little about masochism. But I digress. What were we talking about? Cooking. I'm going to go through my Momofuku cookbook and make some Asian comfort food. Daughter is getting interested in sushi so we'll make some basic rolls. Son is a big ramen fan, we'll roast some pork and leeks and make a big hot bowlful. I'll make some meals for my neighbor with the health problems. And I think I will try baking bread again. I was on a low-carb kick this summer, but it turns out I need some carbs. Carbs = glycogen. Glycogen = muscle energy for efforts longer than a few minutes. No carbs = weak muscles. Doesn't work for me.

Wow. That's one nice looking Clematis Edward. Clematis season has long since passed here (except for the yet to bloom but invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis). The hybrid Clematis leaves around town look pretty bad by now from their exposure to our summer heat and various fungal diseases. Your climate sure suites that vine beautifully and again that pairing with Vertical Horizon is a great combination...........Maryl

We'll be hanging out at home this weekend. Modifying my chicken coop in preparation for chicks in a few weeks.
Just normal, boring, chores and cleaning. I might fit in a little quilting and/or a trip to the library.

Linda... snow!!! The redbuds and azaleas are blooming now and the trees have a tinge of green about them. We'll be sweating soon!

Ded, I had book club last night too! Madame Bovary for us as it's a "classics" group.

Deanna.... awww I miss my chickens!!! I'm jealous!

Hoping to do some riding this weekend and work more on the demolition of our barn. And one of these days I've got to get to the grocery store. We've been eating a hodgepodge of things from the pantry and freezer for the past week!

It has been a long week. We were shoveling ourselves out of a storm Monday night, had a reprieve through the work week, and are now expecting more on Sunday - probably Linda's storm coming East!

Today is my parents' 55th wedding anniversary. Had a nice visit with them earlier in the day. When I used their bathroom before leaving I saw that my mother had taped a handwritten sign on the mirror so that my father would find it first thing. It read, "We love our Big Boy" and she signed it from her and their dog, Dempsey. That little gesture, after all those years, just touched my heart.

DH & I are staying home tonight to listen to a hockey game (it's not televised) and we'll be making pizza from scratch. He will be head chef, I will be supervisor/sous chef. I want to try a "Popeye" version w/ spinach that I saw on Martha yesterday.

Tomorrow night we go to a hockey game - it's a "their home/our home" weekend series.

I hope we don't lose power from the dreaded storm forecast for Sunday because my favorite show (the only nightime show I watch regularly) "Brothers & Sisters" is having a 2-hr special.

Counting down to first grandbaby - Now only 2 weeks from due date!!

Not much going on for me this weekend, my husband wants to go out to dinner and a movie Saturday. (I think its only becasue he feels guilty about leaving me next wekend to go to a gun show LOL) other than that I will dig in some garden beds if its not too cold and maybe go get some seeds to start some lettuce and spinach. Hope everyone has a safe and happy weekend!

I've caught a nasty cold and it really sucks.

But otherwise.....

Yesterday I arrived home from school to find a package with my name on it. Mom wasn't home, and I knew I hadn't ordered anything.......so with great trepidation, I opened the package.

Inside I found a copy of Martha Stewart's Cooking School: Lessons & Recipes for the Home Cook. (I assume this is her latest book?). I protested loudly: "I did NOT order this book!", thinking I'd also find a bill inside the box for it.

Alas, no bill was found.

About 1/2 hour later, I made a pot of coffee and sat down to look at said cookbook. Opened the cover to find the enclosed letter:

Happy Friday everyone. I will stop complaining about my 2" of fresh snow now. I am sooooo ready for spring.

Book clubs and trips to the library...awwww...you guys are giving me chills.

Today I subbed, which meant I got to spend time on the desk...always a treat. I like BSing with our patrons.

Tomorrow I will have a visit from our newly elected US Representative and I'll have a half hour or so to feed him homemade oatmeal cookies and tell him how much our libraries are being used these days. Hey...if oatmeal cookies get me some stimulus money.......

Sunday, no plans. Do laundry, make food. Hopefully, Liana, who has been recently been reminded that she pays no rent, will have the house reasonably clean. I have a stack of donated cookbooks to 'review' and a hot cider w/rum calling my name.
