Vermont Castings Vigilant Stove

We have inherited with the house a Vermont Castings
Vigilant wood/coal stove No. 0795 date 11/4/85 which we are very happy with but we do not have the manual so are not sure about some of the oddities/flaps etc. .

Does anyone know how and where we might find a manual?
We live in the UK.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Go to their web site. I have a stove that was made by a company that they acquired, every thing was there. If not google it, I am sure someone out there has what you are looking for

If you have no success with the current Vermont Castings website - a very real possibility - post your inquiry at www.hearth.com There are a number of parts dealers, some of which also provide manuals for older stoves.

That's a bad idea. The catalytic Encore is not the same as the Cat model. You would not get efficient burns and would both go through lots of wood as well as significantly increase your risk of stove overfiring or chimney fires because you would be eliminating any secondary burning opportunities. I would suggest you clean the current combustor and see if that works or get a replacement combustor which is moderately expensive but should give you several years of very efficient stove use and is worth the money for that alone as well as decreasing your risks from unburned smoke and flue gases.

Yes it can be done, and generally works quite well. The basic vigilant design has been around for many years and is a good stove, the benefit to having one designed for coal burning is that, depending on which year it is (they changed the design slightly over the years) you will have the convienience of an ash pan and shaker grates which are nice to have no matter what you are burning. The reason Vermont castings cannot reccomend burning wood in it is simply because the USEPA since '88 requires wood stoves to obtain a certain level of emissions output and must be tested for this; vermont castings did not do this because it is not required of coal stoves and thus cannot make statements that might be in contrary of what is required of the company by law. So, as you see the reason burning wood is not mentioned is purely a regulatory technicality and not anthing that would negatively impact your woodburning experience. Now, having said that, if possible if it were me i would burn coal, it is a far superior fuel if it is available in your area, and if you don't cut your wood, is generally on a per btu basis less expensive than buying cordwood.

I will try to keep a long story brief.We bought a new mod.V/C encore cat/noncat We put it in mid Nov.2010. Mid Dec. 2010 we started to try to use it around the clock. We can only get 4-4.5 hours of burn time. I went to The dealer late Dec. He said could be my wood so I tried two different wood sources . Than they said to check the gaskets "the dollar bill trick" No problem . the dealer said he would get the regional distributor involved and it would take a week or so. A week later the dealer called and said 7-10 days.On day 9 we woke up to a cold stove ,As usual also a broken fire brick .Now Evan my wife is upset so we went back to the dealer .we were not happy and the dealer was not happy with us. after the first exchange he told us he had said 7-10 days and it was only 9 whats are problem. I pulled out of a bag the broken fire brick.He still wasn't moved. I'll wrap it up.The reg. dist. called that day He asked that I try a few things and we would talk again in a few days. When we did he had spoken to V/C they told him Other stoves in the northeast are having the same issue and they had a fix . It is now March and the stove is still not fixed. Worst $2,500.00 we ever spent we are burning twice the wood and the dealer called me a liar. I will never buy a V/C stove or any other Monessen Hearth product. Do not go to the stove store in Plymouth Mass. Good Luck

What you have is called a "Smoke Dragon". You can't get the parts anymore without hard searching because it's obsolete and should be replaced with an EPA certified unit. The Vt Castings stoves today are CAT equipped and burn clean compared to your unit. Many states are offering rebates to stove owners that will toss those obsolete units for new ones. The newer units burn longer on less wood. And the CAT burns off the bad gasses that would normally go up the chimney and pollute. After 33 years your stove has long outlived it's life and should be retired.

Many thanks for your help. In the meantime we found a very nice fellow called Richard, on line, who emailed the whole manual. Most kind of him and much appreciated. We learned lots
of new things about the stove but unfortunately there is no exploded diagram showing the linkage between thermostat lever and the up and down adjusting rod.
In our case this mechanism isn't functioning. We have no way of adjusting the position of the flap. Any advice on this would be most appreciated.

The thermostat is a pretty simple mechanism. There is a bi-metallic coil inside the housing that expands and contracts with temperature change in the stove. A bead chain or another type of chain attaches to the coil at the top and the sheet metal flap at the bottom. (I can't recall any VC stove that used an adjusting rod instead of a chain, but it's possible) As the coil moves it opens or closes the flap against the air entry port beneath it. You can manually set the thermostat with the lever for greater or lesser heat. The most common problem is probably having the chain reversed from the way it should be set up. Try it in the opposite configuration. If you move the lever in one direction the chain should become tighter. If you move it in the other direction it should become more slack. This is harder to describe than do. There's hardly anything that can go wrong with the thermostat if all the parts are there and the connections are correct. More detail, maybe even a photo, would be a big help in giving you a better answer.

I would suggest a magnetic surface thermometer. I have one on top of my Encore and it helps keep me informed of what is going on with the fire. Without it I kinda look at the fire and guess as to good or bad, hot or cold. My stove is a catalytic so that info is important. I think that yours is not. That is a nice stove.
