Looking Back

I just flipped on page 67 0f this forum which starts off with Annie1992 showing gorgeous pics of her garden with the first crop of beets, potatoes and string beans....and read some of the comments about the weather and sun and temps in the 90's. For a brief few mins. I was transformed and a smile came to my face just thinking that all this goodness is just around the corner..well that might be a stretch...but almost around the corner.

A little OT, but for those of you that have had enough of winter you might want to visit the "Bubble of Denial." It's a nice place to be when it's -6 F!

To try and keep this related to cooking, why not bake so bread? It'll warm up the house and ward up your soul!

Thanks for the reminder. It's difficult to envision our gardens with the record breaking 80+ inches of snow that's fallen on CT & is piled everywhere to say nothing of the arctic cold Canada has been so generous to share with us this winter. (grin)

Actually, we made our first 2011 garden purchase just last week...a yellow butterfly bush for a pot that sits at the entrance to our moss garden. I am surrounded with garden catalogues. DH wants to try more heirloom tomatoes & last year's fingerling potatoes were wonderful.

TJ I'll try to name a few. The one on left center is D. Mercury. The one below and a little to the left of the big dark red one is a hybrid I made a few years ago. It will get a name some time. It hasn't bloomed yet. The one bottom center is D. White fang. Still a young plant. I'll find other pics. that will show other plants.

Thanks.Jo! Harry,the big blue in the pic was bought as Blue Boy,but,as the years went by.I realize it may be just another Elegans,but it gets huge in that location. Jo,I started this part of the garden in 2006,when the power company cut down a lot of trees near their power lines. This used to be a jungle of vines when I started,and little by little,I added plants on this hillside. I put in the steps because it was hard climbing up there all the time. I just cut notches in the hillside,and put in stepping stones into those notches. This year,I had to reinforce them by drilling holes in the back of the stones,as they were getting a little loose,and I drove re-bar into the holes into the ground. I have shown many pics of the area,but I'll have to look in my files for some more. Phil

Sorry, I said 1920, but I gave the search for 1910. You can change the upper limit in the address that I gave to any other year. Oh my how I love the heirloom tomatoes...I consumed many of them..thanks to Whole Foods stores here they were very abundant..You have the right idea, plan your garden and looking at catalogs...It won't be long..

Yes, I remember that garden. I also remember the 90 degree temps, which I destest and abhor. Could you please figure out how I could grow my garden and keep the weather we have now? I much prefer 20f to 90F...

Actually, I'll probably have to just look at pictures this year, I've pretty much decided that this will be a "no garden" year for me. Imagine, Annie without a garden. (sob) But.....I have the wedding, my new boss, I hurt my back moving file boxes and I have a possible knee surgery coming up, so I think it will be a no garden year for me. Sigh. Especially if I really do end up with the knee surgery.

I am trying to convince Elery to put a small garden at his house or build me some more boxes for my backyard here in town so I can at least grow some tomatoes...

Gotta love that bubble....!!
But we're having a heat wave here....20 this morning.
A friend fell on the ice and broke her ankle last night, so I'll be making a pot of soup today to freeze in small containers....and perhaps a batch of breakfast muffins to nuke.
As much as I am yearnign for a good BLT...I do remember yearning for soup and stew weather last August.

I was doing the same Linda...by August I haave pretty much had it with the heat. Like Annie, 90 + degree days are a no no for me too.
Annie do container gardening not so hard on the knees anyway. That is pretty much what I do here. Not enough sun in my yard and it is small, and manageable for me.
So I do flowers and herbs thats about it.

I actually enjoy soup and stew weather. I totally missed garden time last year and might miss it again this year due to life's complications. I much prefer opening my jars of already made salsa and enjoying them than the process of making the salsa! I love to garden but I hate to mess with food!
I bought a ton of seeds last year and most of them were a BUST. They just didn't grow for some reason. Just as well, I got sick and couldn't garden.
For whatever odd reason, I can wait for spring. I am in hibernate mode this year, literally. I haven't had my fill of dried beans, cabbage, potatoes and squash. But ask me come mid March. Unfortuantely it is usually still winter here then too.
