What type chewable vitamins do you give your kids?

I have been doing the spongy colored ones from Costco, not kirkland but the name escapes me. Any good websites or recommendation?

My kids are grown now, but I didn't regularly give my kids vitamin pills. There is a lot of evidence that vitamin supplements may do more harm than good. Many foods like cereal, milk and OJ are already fortified with vitamins. I know that it can be difficult, but the best way for kids to get vitamins is through fruits and veggies.

Another mom who did not give vitamins because I didn't trust the labs who sanctioned them. And this subject has been in the news again recently. Sneak good nutrition into the things they like. Blenders are a God Send for feeding picky kids. Tomatoes cover most greens if they are blended and most kids like catsup.

The trick is to hide nutrients.

This reminds me of Accelerated Reading and sending kids to the AR store for earning points in reading. In my opinion, this awful program has single handedly caused more kids to dislike reading than just about any other factor at our school. Is rewarding a child for good grades similar to rewarding a child for reading? I don't know. Red lover, I'm laughing because Accelerated Reader was a big fat pain in the neck here at our house. Both my kids and I love to read. Accelerated Reader and another program the school had where kids kept track of the pages they read were nothing but a drag most of the time. For us it was like telling people they could eat all the ice cream they want, but they have to count the number of bites and be tested about the flavor. The teachers told me Accelerated Reader helped some of the kids, although clearly not mine. The program was just an inconvenience to my kids, though; if it dinged my kids' desire to read, they had plenty of reading love to spare. I think paying for reading and paying for grades are essentially the same thing. And I say if paying for reading helps some kids, and if their parents and teachers think that's a useful tool and want to use it, then go for it. I didn't pay my kids for reading because they read without it. Instead, I had to look at motivation to get them to occasionally put down a book and interact with the rest of the world. Sueb – Hmm. .we do have a finished basement. I prefer to be upstairs for tv, but maybe that will get used more in the years to come. Ha ! ‘whoever loses’ Daisey – I feel like I’m getting so old, lol. We don’t watch tv on anything other than the tv, but I’m sure that’s something that will change eventually here too. Mayflowers – but he comes from solid Scandinavian farm stock That made me chuckle. I think a sectional would work and give a two sitting spots while not going over the entrance like the current loveseat. I don’t know about an end table then. I don’t think there’d be room to the left (when facing the tv). With the current entertainment stand the tv viewing seats would be about the same. I’ve been working on some plans. I need to refine and clarify a few things, but I’ll be posting eventually asking for feedback. Melle – Nodding head yes. The couch and loveseat was the ONLY furniture I found IRL (traveled all over creation) that I liked. Didn’t measure anything. Then I went bonkers buying stuff off CL with no plan and no measurements. That’s how I ended up where I am today, lol. It’s been long enough now I can justify making some changes.I had to look up that chair. I never heard of it. Thanks! Mtnrd – An L shape sofa or section may be in the future. Ha, I already went to DH about knocking down walls or adding windows and after the bewildered look heard a no. Melis – We need to do something about our DVDs. We don’t have a lot, but I need some storage space. If we keep them I may end up putting them in a large holder and putting the cases in the attic. We think about getting Netflix on and off. I have a relative who loves it. Fori is not please – I love your name! Unfortunately I don't know if it would make a viewing difference the way the unit is made. It's also three sections. The whole thing is as long as my couch – 8’. Beanbags! Oh we have one! A big black one that’s in the basement family room. :) DH loves the thing. Roarah –I may end up getting some floor pillows in the future. Oh, I’ve love a fireplace! BBGalore – The entertainment stand is one of those things…I actually still like the piece itself. It is dated and that’s starting to bother me. It’s very solid, well made, and I like the storage. But I also think the whole room may benefit if I found it a new home. Crl – DS currently has his own chair that he likes, but he’s been on the furniture more lately. I’m looking forward to removing the chair actually! Just waiting…. Lynn – I think eventually here we’ll get a larger tv. I’m fine with a small one, but I think DH would be pleased with a larger one. Our gym has a very large tv that DH was happy to pick out, lol. Busy – you can angle the tv on a wall mount too... Yeeah, I realized after I typed that I think you can adjust the angle. “it has the corner that we could all (5) comfortably sit on it, with plenty of room to spare!” That’s good to hear. I never wanted a sectional because I don’t like that it’s all one large piece. I hog the loveseat to myself and DH the couch. Kitty – Thanks for sharing the story about your friend! I should bring that beanbag up. I bet DS would like it. Suzy – Pretty room!

Tina, I think suggesting that adults not gossip, with children, about other children, is very good advice. and it is advice about communicating with a child, which is what was asked. I also think that, judging from the response, that - Oakley's rather selective comment notwithstanding - most here had that part of the OP's narrative jump off the page at them since most clearly saw it as a pretty serious issue, which it is (again, hardly a faux pas). That, to me, did not fall under parenting advice but really was a general observation resulting from what I suspect is the reaction by a lot of people of surprise that an adult would participate in conversation like that. If I hear someone bleat out racist or sexist or otherwise offensive comments, yep, I tell them it's offensive. If you don't, as Maya Angelou said, "you are part of the problem." I don't think the OP needs to read the comments as judgmental but instead can practice some introspection, assess the comments and the sentiment behind them, and yes, learn something from them. That is a good thing. The only comment I thought was out of line was Sushi's about hoping her daughter doesn't model that OP's behavior, and that one got 3 'Lkes" (and no chastisement from Oakley!). I thought that was personalizing it and making a general statement about the OP as a person rather than the one item, so to me, that comment was wrong and crossed a line. If we go down a road of criticizing criticism, where does it end? There is no end, only potholes of double and randomly applied standards based not on a principle but on personal ego and pettiness (again, using Oakley's comment as an example).

My DH uses the legal term "expectation of privacy", as in "until you are a self-supporting adult, you should have no expectation of privacy". If we are paying for the devices and the service, we own it all, just like an employer. In our house, what it means is that we need to have everyone's passwords for their devices and accounts, and we reserve the right to periodically review their activity/messages/images etc. We hardly ever do any of that. And none of it is foolproof anyway. Like a lot of parenting, there is some smoke and mirrors involved. I don't think we can compare today's world to our teen years. It's not about reading diaries. It is about real world risks well beyond their years to assess. I often tell my DH, kids get expelled today for things they text, when kids used to *say* the same things when we were teens, but there was no record of it. (at least in private schools they are very strict about tech) As is the fashion in our circles, we held off mightily on technology of all kinds. I think I related before that this once resulted in a long car ride with my son and another middle school student who spent most of the the time talking about StarWars. My son had never seen or heard of it, but he was an opera buff. LOL At what point were our good intentions handicapping him? One of my DD actually burst into tears the year she opened a present and got her phone, so belated was it in her peer group. They have become a vital means of being part of communities for kids. As a parent, I like that my kids have phones. I can reach them when the urge strikes me. I can text rather than nag or yell. And it is very handy for punishment. My youngest DD has not had her phone for weeks as a punishment, and my DH points out it hurts us more. It complicates logistics and, ironically, if she does something, I can't think of how to punish her because I already have her phone. Maybe I need to get her another one. ; )

Hi, Peyton, I try to find gummies that have iron in them, but any kind my DS (5 years old) will eat is what I want. (This is in contrast to his cousin, who begs for celery and broccoli at the grocery store.) Anyway, if DS is shopping with me he votes for superheros, etc. Right now we've got "Marvel Heroes" from Target and he's happy with the taste ("no artificial flavors or colors").

I haven't checked GNC or any other places that specialize in nutrition, but they'd have something containing all of the good stuff. I always check to make sure the vitamins don't contain artificial sweeteners, since I'm sensitive to aspartame.

Have you tried something and it doesn't work for your kids?

GNC uses rubber stamp labs according to the expose I watched recently. Dateline interviewed people who lost their hair and experienced kidney damage after using GNC products.

Dateline purposely added Poison ingredients in a nutrition concoction; took it to the same lab GNC uses. The lab didn't find the poison and Dateline suggested many labs may not perform tests.

It's an unregulated industry and buyer beware.

Be especially careful about vitamins with iron in them. When my oldest son was four he got into the childproof cap of a bottle of chewable vitamins that were on an upper shelf in the kitchen cabinet. I wasn't sure how many he ingested, so I called poison control. I administered ipecac, but they wanted him to be seen at the hospital because iron overdose can be very dangerous. At the hospital they gave him activated charcoal, and kept him overnight for observation. This happened almost 30 years ago, and remains fresh in my mind.
Unless your child has a diagnosed deficiency I just don't think that the risks outweigh the benefits.

Check out Vitafusion brand. I haven't done any digging around about them but my BIL has a good opinion and feels the same as I do (below). They're a gummy vitamin and there aren't any artificial sweetners or colors in there.

In general, I know people have different opinions on vitamins and not all are created equal but the soil isn't the same as it was many years ago and lacks nutrients. IMO you'd have to eat tons fo raw fruits and veggies and I don't believe even that's enough. And the cooking process takes out what's left of the good stuff.

Terriks, the same thing happened to my children! I used to give them vitamins shaped like Flintstone characters and kept them in the top kitchen cabinet. One day when I was taking a shower my five year old pulled a chair over to the counter, got up on it and pulled two bottles of vitamins down. He opened both and gave one to his three-year-old sister and they started munching away. Neither could tell me how many they had eaten so I took them to our pediatrician. She gave them both ipecac, but my daughter had iron toxicity and had to stay in the hospital overnight. I threw the vitamins away forever that day, and they haven't suffered one bit from not taking extra vitamins above what they naturally get in a balanced diet. Oh---and I asked my son how he got the "child proof" cap off, and he said he just read the directions on it.... push and turn!

Well, these are temporarily out stock but I like Dr. Fuhrman's Pixie Vites. They are not chewable but a powder, kind of like Pixie-Stix so if you need to blend them to get them into a reluctant child, that is possible. Read the ingredient list, pretty darn cool, if you ask me...

thanks for all the heads up. My kids are older so I don't worry about overdosing. I like the previous post on the pixie dust stuff. They would love that in there water bottles!thanks!
