Jack La Lanne Power Juicer?

Anyone have one? Or does anyone know of someone that has one? They advertise that you can juice an orange or apple without cutting it or pealing it. Anyone know?

Yes, you can juice them, but in the case of the orange, all the bitter oils in the skin are released into the juice, making it taste NOTHING like regular orange juice.

They claim it juices 17% more than other juicer. It is not true. We have a Champion juicer that juices more. It also locks frequently. If you want to send it back you pay around $18. The whole thing is a sham, a reap off!

The difference is that apple cider is just that, apples smashed and then pressed to extract all their juices. It's a sweet drink. Vinegar has gone through several chemical changes, first you ferment the cider from the apples, just like you are making beer or wine. Then a "mother" is introduced. There is no good way to describe a mother. If you have ever had a batch of vinegar sit around and get a nasty looking snotty mass in it, then you have seen a mother. The mother eats the sugars and converts them to acid. Fresh cider is sweet, then after fermenting it contains alcohol (like beer or wine) and then the mother converts the whole thing to vinegar. Air is what vinegar needs. Beer and wine are sealed to keep out air, but for vinegar to happen you need air, so you usually make it in a wooden barrel or a container larger than you need. The only downfall with making your own vinegar is that you never know the percentage of acid. You can use it for cooking but not preserving. So you can make salad dressing but not pickles, just because you can't be sure that it is strong enough to keep bacteria from growing. Must also chime in, as the Villaware/Roma surpasses any other method of extracting juice and pulp from berries and tomatoes. With this food strainer, you need to use the smaller holes berry screen as the strainer that comes with the machine is useeful for larger seeds like that of a tomato. Not only do they rmeove seeds from berries, but also remove the skins and seeds from tomatoes. Its an invaluable tool for anyone wanting seedless preserves and sauces with no annoying seeds and skins. Some prefer the Foley, but if you were to consider the outpout speed of the Villaware, it can 'crank' out at least three times more liquid in the same time compared to a Foley. Also, a Foley would not handle tomatoes very well as they need to be blanched or cut up well to get them under the pressure paddle. About the only seeds a Villware can't handle well are the tiny ones in blueberries, but these are not as annoying to most people. With the Villware, you can also run the waste through a second time to remove even more of the juices and pulp. Forget regular strainers and jelly bags, as they are just too slow.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. Kailua, how does that citrus juicer not make a mess on the counter (or does it)? With nothing covering the top, it seems it would be messy. Sreed, I do not want to peel at all. In reality I don't even want to cut in half. The (only) one I used in Italy, you just dropped in the entire orange. I don't know that I can find that in smaller than industrial size, but I would love it. I was pretty much set on a Breville, but the comment above about the plastic gears is scaring me. Even $2-300 is a lot if the gears are going to break quickly. I got a new Williams Sonoma catalog yesterday, and it is full of juicers. From the pictures, the Breville Juice Fountain was what I think I would have chosen, but it doesn't explain in the description that you have to peel and slice the oranges first. I don't want to do that!

I have this French mandoline from Lee Valley Tools. It ain't cheap, but is extremely sturdy, and the cutting width is infinitely variable. Keep in mind that it is very difficult with any tool to cut soft tomatoes uniformly thin, but otherwise, this gadget is great for all veggies, and it collapses quite flat for easy storage. Can't help you with a juicer, but my blender is a VitaMix 3600+ which is now over 25 yrs old and quite retro looking. I have the JLL Power Juicer (paid $100 at Costco), but the spout on mine will not accommodate a whole piece of fruit. I cut up my fruit or veggies in chunks and feed them in a few at a time. I really love my juicer! I bought it about 1 1/2 years ago to juice fresh fruits, and to make popsicles out of the juice for my grandson. I love making carrot or fruit juices for myself. I have a separate juicer for the oranges, lemons and grapefruit I cut off my trees! I don't like having to wash the juicers, but it's a small price to pay for fresh juice!

I have a new one. My son gave it to me for Mother's day. It has a bigger spout.
I like it, but since I have diabetes...I have to watch the juices I drink. I did not want to hurt his feelings. I hardly ever use it, but wish I could...smile
He used it to deminstrate. He cut up water mellon ..rinds and all. It tasted Ok...smile.

My dad has one of these with the wide spout. He used it alot in the beginning, now not so much. You do have to clean it thoroughly after each use of course, which is easy to do but does take time. It works beautifully, doesn't make as much noise as a blender. He bought his in Target for around $100. It's great for vegetables too if fruit sugars are an issue. The great thing about buying it in a store is no shipping charge should you choose to return it.
