Which Diet

I would appreciate someone advising me what differences there are in the Atkins Diet, South Beach, The Zone, etc. so that I can make my choice. Thanks.

Nonnie I personally don't consider Adkins safe..not for me at least (ducking all Atkins dieters *LOL*) I am trying South Beach now. I started with phase 2 as I didn't want to chance ketosis. They say U shouldn't go into ketosis even in phase 1 but didn't want to chance it. I have cut down on carbs but not out. I eat at least 1 slice of bread a day..1/2 a cup of beans of some kind every day.. cereal. I have at least 1 carb a meal. I try to have 2 milks but it usually is yogurt & cheese. I have a small snack between each meal. I have cut down on fats but not out.
I'm not breaking any records losing but I am losing.
There is lots of info on the net.
Good luck on which other U chose.

I have listened to people for years talk about the fact that Weight Watchers is real food that you buy and cook at home, because many of the people I use to go to church with have found it to be the most consistent. I have worked with the diabetics association diets in my profession and know they are well balanced meals/snacks and their menus are available at the library so you don't have to sign-up for the constant advertisements. Balance the two diet menus and you should be able to work out something that will work for the fussy-eater part of you. Most importantly is keep posting here where you can get support because that's what determines, most of the time, whether or not a dieter is successful--SUPPORT! Since you quit smoking you know you've got the will-power (AKA self discipline) and perseverance to lose the weight. Congratulations! now you only have to add water and exercise and you are on your way. We look forward to hearing about your successes and your slips, because none of US are perfect at this so you can't be either. (lots of smiles)

I don't know a lot about the diet, except that a friend did it to lower his cholesterol. He followed it to the letter and did succeed in improving his blood chemistry numbers as well as losing 20 pounds in about 6 months. (He wasn't really overweight though--just a little heavier than he typically had been most of his life). He is now fit and trim. All I really know is that he used all whole-grains and olive oil as his only added fat. He ate mostly fish and chicken, but did do some red meat, but it was limited in frequency and portion. I don't know about dairy. And I think he cut out all or almost all sugars. There definitely seemed to be something that worked well for him. I hope you find all the success you're looking for. I had my annual physical at the end of May, and my cholesterol was 299. I immediately cut out all sugar and refined carbs and trans fats. I walked 40 minutes a day. I ate healthy low-carb whole foods like baked or grilled chicken, wild salmon, grass-fed beef maybe once a week, fish, eggs, legumes (primarily red or black beans), LOTS of vegetables (but no potatoes), avocados, and some fruit (mostly berries and apples). Healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil and extra virgin coconut oil. I never felt deprived or hungry. For snacks, I ate nuts, mostly almonds and walnuts, but also some pecans and pistachios. One of my favorite snacks is apple pieces dipped into almond butter. Homemade kale chips are good, too. For beverages, I stuck to water and lots of it, and tea (green, white or Rooibos). I took a high quality fish oil supplement, not the ones you buy at the grocery store. And for a sweetener, I use "Just Like Sugar." I like it better than Stevia and you definitely want to avoid aspartame. Although after a short while of no sweets, I lost my desire for them and seldom used the Just Like Sugar. After 3 months (and 20 pounds lighter) I had my cholesterol re-checked and it was down to 224. I don't need to lose much more weight, but I'm going to continue on this eating plan because I feel soooo much better. I think the key is to reduce inflammation, I think that is the real culprit to much of what ails us. Good luck to your SO. He's a lucky man to have you helping him and looking out for him!

I am quilty... tried slim fast and did lose weight on it a few years ago.. it does work. I am quite sure it is not the healtiest way to go. Weight Watchers to me is pretty hard to beat... I really like it now that it's online, you don't have to attend meeting's if you don't want to. There are all sorts of recipes available and They have a smart phone app....I love the smart phone app. It is super handy to keep track of your points on and when you are out you can pull it up and check the points for foods at different restaurants. I also like the way you can figure points for a food that doesn't have points listed. I think Weight Watchers online is something like 17.00 a month, that's a pretty good bargain, in my opinion. I have also tried other liquid protein diets and after a while they made my stomach hurt and I had a nausating (sp) feeling after drinking them.

Go over to amazon.com, type in a name of a diet book in the search box and then you will get a brief overall of the plan and lots of customer reviews.

I've tried Atkins and Suzanne Somers ~ neither really worked for me. The Zone seems like it would be hard to figure out, although lots of peeps use it. I've had good luck with both The Carbohydrate Addicts Lifeplan and The Fat Flush Plan (which I still follow).

There's so many diets out there and so many pro and cons on all of them. I just wanted to tell you that I lost 20 lbs by cutting out regular soda and going to diet sodas and drinking more water. Also, cutting out a lot of my sugery foods and fattening foods. And exercise.

I have 30 more to go.

It's a lifestyle change and commitment. And, darn, it doesn't happen overnight. lol I hope you find the right plan for yourself. Just remember, you're not alone. In fact, most of the women I know are battling the same problem. But, thank goodness that today we have so many delicious diet foods to choose from.

I was very successful on Weight Watchers--till I stopped doing it and returned to eating the way I did before, and gained it back. But that is true of any of these programs--you have to make a permanent change to keep the weight off. Now I'm back on WW again--it works.

It's not necessary to go on a "diet" to lose weight. Simply eating a little less (skipping dessert, for example) and exercising more (or just exercising at all if you're not doing that now) will lead to weight loss.

I lost 12 1/2 pounds on South Beach the first 2 weeks I was on it. Then 6+ pounds the next 2 weeks, and I had lost 26 pounds when I went off the diet. It was (is) the easiest to follow and stay on diet I have ever tried. The only hard part was that I craved fruit sometimes.

I am back on it, in phase 1, and I would like to loose 55 pounds. I know it won't happen overnight, but it will happen.

I wore a size 8 jeans when I quit smoking 5 years ago. I would like to get down to a size 12 at least. I don't have to be model thin, just would like to feel healthy again.
