How much is shipping? I know it is a savings, but I personally would not buy it. Besides the fact that I am really trying to buy made in USA, I would worry about shipping time and if something went wrong. For something that important, I'd try to buy local.

But no, I've never done it myself nor do I know anyone that has. Didn't even realize you could shop that way!

We went Jr prom dress shopping yesterday and came home empty handed. Don't think we'll be doing the China route but we don't know what to do right now. With 5 kids and DSIL just settling into a new job, their budget is much tighter than $400.

I made Aimee's Prom/Ball dresses but I'm not feeling the urge to make another one. Hope I don't have to.

How do you know that the $400 dress is not also made in China? It sounds like the difference in price is based on the lack of mark up in the cheaper one.

DD2 was married last August. After we purchased her wedding dress locally, I was looking on line for picture to share with DD1. I ran across a website that had "designer" wedding dresses for way less. They copy them from pictures. Reviews were horrible. Brides in tears. Couldn't get money back, etc. Said they were very cheaply made, not as shown in photos, etc. I would skip.

Do you have a consignment store nearby? Some wedding dress shops also carry prom dresses.

I meant we won't be ordering from China. Sorry. I feel certain any prom dress that is somewhat affordable will have come from China.

I haven't shopped for prom or formal with DD for quite some time, but when we did, the cost of a dress to be worn one time was crazy expensive. Over the holidays, my SIL ordered knock off Uggs for my DN online from China. It was a no fuss, no muss purchase and the customer service with that company was far superior than that of the official Ugg company. Even things that are carrying the "Made in USA" do not have to be totally comprised of components manufactured here.

What is the current exchange rate of dollar/yuan?

they seem to make gowns VERY long these days!!! i don't think she'll have problems finding a gown that's long enough...
i am 5'9" and had to buy 2 gowns in last year or so and most of the gowns needed to be hemmed AT LEAST 4-5" if not more! and that was with a 1 1/2-2" heel!
i would shop for a good sale or consignment and be sure the hemming was done fitted to her body...not just measurements given online!
glad my boy only needs to rent a tux! :)

We actually found some reasonably priced ($200) gowns at the Nordstrom website. The nice thing about Nordstrom is that they have the dresses in stock and you don't have to wait for them to be delivered from the manufacturer. Bloomingdales also had some cute dresses but the shipping times were just too long.

Shipping from Nordstrom was free but I paid $15 for the expedited shipping just to be safe. I figured it was about the same amount of money as gas expenses to Savannah or Jacksonville for a shopping trip and I won't have to buy lunch!

The Nordstrom dresses should arrive today. I'll let you know how it goes ...

After emailing the companies we found our that these are not the designer gown but the companies version of that gown. We looked a few places today but don't have many options in our town. We will head to Indianapolis this weekend to hit Nordstrom's, Saks, VOn Maur, etc.

The dress sites were priced in US$ so I don't know how the exchange rate works.

This expensive dress did looks gorgeous on DD and it was in her favorite color of all time--purple. It will be hard getting it out of her mind but hopefully we can find a more reasonably priced dress.

Look at Macy's online. Had to buy my girl a dress for her God fathers wedding a few months ago. Everything we found was for flat chested skinny teens (no offense). Everything was short which was unbelievable because she's 5'4" but because she has boobs & a butt; it took away the length.

We ended up at one of the larger Macy's & found something. It was the only place that had age appropriate dress that actually fit her.

When my DD got married, I did something really stupid...I had ordered my dress, but didn't bother to TRY IT ON when I picked it up. At the bridal store, they had a no return policy. By the time I finally tried it on, we were only a couple weeks from the wedding date, and it was far too late to order the correct size (bridal shops do not do vanity sizing, BTW).

In a panic, I went to Nordstroms on-line and found a dress I absolutely loved, and another I liked a lot, so I ordered both and they shipped in no time. Turned out my 2nd choice was the one I wore, and got so many compliments on it. Fit like a dream!!

Nordy's return policy is great, too...and it turned out that both the dresses combined cost almost less that what I paid for the original, non-returnable gown.

We went shopping again today and GD found a beautiful prom dress at Macy's for $79 and a great pair of heels (her first) for $90. Grammy Crackers (me) sprung for the new jewelry ($83.). She looks beautiful!

She is thrilled because she saw the shoes in 'Seventeen' magazine and fell in love. These heels are the first thing she has ever had that was in a magazine. I told her that the only thing I own that was in a magazine is a skillet.

We had a great three generation day.

I worked in retail(anyone remember Georgiou?)for years, where everything was made in Greece, hence the fit models were also Greek, and clothing was cut longer and slimmer. Being Chinese women are shorter/smaller, their fit models will also be smaller. My youngest DD who is 4'11 seems to be able to wear clothes from Forever 21 and other stores where the clothing is made in China. With a DD 6'2" I would definitely look for a dress she can try on. ;o)

My DD was 5'9" and 110 lbs at the time we were looking for her senior prom dress. Had a very difficult time finding dresses that she liked and also fit. We had the opposite experience than that of roselvr. All of the dresses were cut for more shapley girls, many of the dresses were also too short. Being model thin is not so desirable when you are in high school.

I am a loyal Nordstrom shopper. We were able to find alot of sweet 16 party dresses when DD needed those thru Nordys. Can't comment on their prom dresses as we never looked there for prom. Can't hurt, I just love the customer service provided by Nordstrom. They make everything easy as opposed to other stores where the sales people act like they are doing you a favor by selling you an overpriced piece of clothing.
