whole grain bread flour?

Hi,

I bought whole grain BREAD flour and decided to make Italian bread with it. I did everything like recipe called for but instead of bread flour I used whole grain bread flour. I did not like the result: the form of the bread was ugly, the crust was sooo unbelievebly hard. So what I did wrong? Should I have used wheat gluten with it ,as I did when I made simple whole grain bread? Or anything else?

I would appreciate any advice!
