butter soaked into stone and smoking

I have a relatively new and cheap, $10, pizza stone. I suggested that my daughter bake cookies on it, so she did. The butter soaked into the stone, discolored it which is no big deal, but it smoked like a 6 alarm the next time it was in the oven. It smoked again.

I scrubbed it without soap, using hot and then cold water. Nothing.

I suppose I could try Dawn, but then wouldn't it have a soapy taste? Dh says to toss it, but my frugal dna won't allow that. It really smokes big time. Any ideas? tia.

You baked cookies right on the stone?

I only use a stone to bake bread or pizza.
I clean mine when I clean the oven. Leave it in during the self-cleaning cycle.

Do not use soap on your stone.

don't toss the stone....even if you don't have a self clean cycle, just baking at a high temp will burn it off....and don't use it for cookies again....

Hope that 'butt' isn't the kind with killer tobacco in it! New Years resolution, save money, save life, give up killer smoking.... Panko is great as a help to add some solid material to a powder, and acts as a filler. Silicone dioxide will absorb moisure that would otherwise cause clumping of the dried mixture. I made a meat rub a couple of times, using hydrolized soy protien, dried sweet peppers, coriander, mustard seed, pepper, dried onion, dried garlic, dried tamarind powder, bay leaf, juniper berries, and several other seasonings. It started to clump and was nearly like cement in the titghly capped jars. After adding a little silicone dioxide it was as dry and as loose as you could get. The rub was put onto a tenderloin roast, and was absolutely the best textured and tasting I have had for a very long time. You could cut the roast with a butter knife. When drying/dehydrating, the faster its done, the more flavor remains. Doing the drying in an oven or with just a fan blowing on it, will not give the highest flavor quality. Also, to help keep in from degrading too much, if its stored under vacuum it will keep flavor much longer too. I do this with herbs like dill weed and after a year of storage, the weed would turn brown and bland. If put in jars and capped with a vacuum (such as from a Food Saver machine and attachment), it will keep much longer. I have some 2 year old dill weed right now that is as bright a green color as stuff that was just picked this past summer. Do you have any charcoal? Not the kind that lights instantly. Regular charcoal or the kind used in aquarium filters. Put some in a butter dish with holes in the lid. Place the dish and the yarn in a garbage bag for a few days with the top closed really tight. Also wash the items after you knit or crochet them. Just incase some of the charcoal might dust off. The charcoal will absorb the odor. I had a gallon of milk leak in the back of my Expedition on the way home from the grocery store. The back is carpeted like the rest of the vehicle. What a stink! Even tho I had cleaned it up and used a cleaner on it. And that was in Feb! I bought some filter charcoal, cause in the winter I didn't have any use for, or place to keep that much for the grill. Then I made a fabric pillow filled with the charcoal granules and put that in the car. After a few days the smell was gone. I did leave the charcoal in all summer. That was 2 years ago. Usually, the car is in the garage, but that summer I spent a month with my daughter and had to park outside in the sun the whole time. Even then, it didn't smell like sour milk. any porous marble or for that matter any porous stone can stain given the right circumstances and staining agent. Even in this case sweetbabyjames wiped up the butter immediatley but it may have been soft butter and the wiping may have pushed some grease into the stone.It is possible that the stain may just disappear over a few days. Washing with a alkaline cleaner may help to breakdown the grease as well. Try just putting flour or powder over the stain until you have the proper ingredients to poultice. Always do the water test to check porosity of stone and see just how porous it is. Then make sure it is sealed. You will be surprised that there are quite a few stones that will exhibit minimal porosity. Polished stones and many light travertines will have minimal porosity if any. Also always remember if you do get a stain in most cases it can be removed. As far as using comet or bon ami to remove an etch yes it may work under the right circumstances. First there are different levels of etching. If the etch is light enough (it will feel smooth to the fingertip)then yes on a honed surface using an abrasive cleaner and scrub pad may work. But you have to be able to blend the repair into the rest of the countertop. If your surface is a high hone the abrasive cleaner will remove that etch but then you have to match the finish of the rest of the surface or rehone the whole piece or pieces. Other etch marks that feel rough to the touch may require more agressive abrasives to remove them. It would only make matters worse on a polished marble because once you remove the etch you now have a dull spot that still needs to be polished.There are products you can purchase that will remove etches and repolish the stone. They have their limitations as well but perform well on minor etching over small areas. Improvements in durability over different stones? There is a difference in hardness in danby and statuary and there may be a difference in how they perform. I think it has more to do with the actual grade or quality of the stone itself. I also think the most important aspect of the whole stone experience is working with fabricators and installers that clarify and explain the pros,cons and complexities of the surfaces that you are purchasing or exploring. I have always loved peanut butter and still do. It is a staple in my pantry and in our diet. But, only the kind without shortening and sugar added to it. Peanut butter has culinary uses that go beyond just with bread. A spoonful of it can add a nice touch to something like a gumbo,, and it is a pretty good stand in for tahini. I love it just as it is, as long as it is just peanut butter with nothing added. Matter of fact, I just had a piece of toasty bread with natural peanut butter for breakfast minutes ago. I make nice whole grain waffles and I prefer peanut butter over butter with some old fashion black strap molasses on it. I grew up with having peanut butter on pancakes and waffles. Dont do pancakes anymore and my waffles are full of substance and nutrition. When we travel we almost always bring a peanut butter sandwich because it is so good, needs no special care and is so easy to pack. Hubs likes sliced habenaros on his. Peanut butter is a valuable staple in my house and I never get tired of it. I pour off the oil on top of the jar and put that aside for some other use. You have to be careful, though, peanut butter is high in calories and it can fool you. But, about jelly... can take it or leave it. One small jar may last a couple of years for us. So, when I do buy it I look for something of quality and buy only a small bit. Mostly it delivers sweet with a touch of fruity something.

Thanks for your advice. She actually used 4-8(yikes, sure -not out of her budget!) circles of parchment paper under the butter rich cookie dough, and it soaked.

We don't have a self cleaning oven, not yet. But when I had the stone in at 450 deg for bread baking, no knead, it was smoking like crazy. I wish that I could leave it in the high temp oven and it would get better, but when I did, it got worse.

The butter is not coming thru the other side of the stone. It has only discolored the one side--which I why there may be hope, yet.

What do you all think about waiting til nicer weather and I can use it on the gas grill, and if it smokes, it smokes. As long as it will cure it. The abin5 bread folks use grills for breads and pizza, but I have no idea how huge wafts of smoke will affect good bread and pizza. Oy, what to do? tia

Just bake your bread on it and open the window to let out the smoke....eventually it will burn off.

Can you put an exhaust fan; on low speed, in a window near the oven ???

If so, turn the heat all the way up and leave the stone in the oven for about an hour,
or Bake it until the smoking stops.

Try sprinkling some baking soda on the stone's grease spots the next time you heat the oven. Position the stone to the lowest level and the smoking should go away in a few minutes. Then you can continue baking whatever without taking out the stone - or you can take the stone out. Never use water to clean the stone. Just scrape any burnt pieces off. Discolorations will happen - sort of like being well-seasoned. Mine is looking black after all the years of use.

Also, the baking soda works well whenever a casserole or pie drips over the edge and some major smoking can occur. Just open the oven door and sprinkle some baking soda on the drippings. Soon the smoking will go away. I've used that tip several times and it works.

. Once the stone cools and then you reheat - does it still smoke?

I think the baking soda will only work if it is smoking.

Good suggestion about the baking soda....I might also suggest putting corn meal on the stone and rubbing it in...then brushing it off and repeating until ti seems the grease has been absorbed.
But...$10 is Ten Dollars !!

I have a pampered chef pizza stone and I have made cookies on it. But I seasoned it before ever baking on it by brushing it with oil and baking the stone. I did this a couple times. The stone isn't so porous then. Mine is pretty darned black too but nothing sticks to it now.

It really isn't recommended to oil or grease a pizza stone.

It is because the stone is porous that it is able to withdraw the moisture from the dough, making for a nice crisp crust. You do not want to "seal" your stone. Defeats the purpose of the stone.
