chick lit - the best of the worst, anyone?

Hi all,

We are heading out on a trip in about a week. It is 12 hours to get there, so I am looking for some light (but quality) reading for the plane and then beside the pool. Does anyone have anything to recommend that they think would make a good read? I like chick lit, but not the horrible stuff that is often on best seller's lists (does this make sense?). I'm thinking along the lines of "The time traveller's wife", "The fault in our stars", "The glass castle" - anyone read anything along those lines that they think would be worthwhile? Thanks!

How about "The Language of Flowers"? I haven't read it myself, but it got raves from some people who like the "smarter" end of chick-lit.

The ARS trying to sell HTs of any kind as a "gateway" rose to bring in new people who want to grow roses is so antiquated it's silly. Please tell me that the goal of this whole thing wasn't to increase general rose sales. Believing my only options were HTs I didn't grow roses in my perennial gardens for 20 years. It wasn't until OGRs became something less fuzzy in my mind and I realized I didn't have to purchase my plants locally (since no one sells OGRs here!) that I dipped my toe in the rose world. A study that (1) promotes HTs and (2) claims something you spray is "easy." Would have done nothing to capture me and that much more to push me away from roses in general. Having it taken so long for me to finally find Tea roses it makes me sad to see them so maligned by associating them like this with HTs--intentionally. I really get why someone like Jeri would be unhappy about this. It's like her life's work of educating us about Tea roses has been hijacked. Just as she seems to be making some traction they come in a try to steal the goodwill she and others have built for Tea roses by erronously glomming on to the "Tea" name.

I missed that [Donate Now] thing at the top of the page too. The site is useless. While any top 100 list is going to differ depending on who they poll, this one just accepts any reader's Top 10 submissions without any screening. I suspect that most of these submissions weren't even books that the submitter read and enjoyed, but just books they remember reading back in school or even books that they had "heard of" in school and felt "smart" by submitting them titles. Check out their Top 100 Authors of all time. Coming in at #1 is William Shakespeare! LOL. Wow. Just wow. Has anyone ever read him by choice? Hunter S. Thompson comes in on the list somewhere between Plato and Homer and a bit down on the list from Virgil. Dr. Seuss makes the list way ahead of Jean Paul Sarte. Puleeez. Likes: Most any good cooking or baking, including turkey, roast, bread, rolls & baked goods, bacon, good pizza, coffee, etc. The clean air after a rain, especially in the woods. Similarly, morning dew on the grass. Fresh mowed grass, hay or alfalfa. Especially early in the morning with the dew on it. Most all fruit, especially citrus. Butterscotch Pine Wood fires Things cleaned with bleach (for some reason). Detest: Most any perfume or cologne. (Especially that cheap jug perfume so many old women insist on marinating in. Just because you can't smell it grandma doesn't mean the rest of the world can't smell you a block away!) Lilacs. Diesel exhaust. Scented laundry detergents & fabric softeners and might as well include most artificially scented cleaners. Those Christmas tree car air fresheners! Passed gas from cheap beer! All-time worst smell, even worse than skunk, has to be rotten chicken or rotten pork.

The movie 'Love Story' is in my top ten bad movies. If you have a taste for really bad movies, it is very, very funny. Has anyone read 'The Horse Whisperer'? It would be a close candidate for worst book - right up there with 'Bridges of Madison County'. It starts off as a story about how to train horses, then morphs into a really sentimental and very sticky love story. I worked at a small town library when Bridges was popular. The waiting list for it was several hundred people long, most of them women. For many, reading it seemed almost a life changing experience. Quite often, the books that I have found excrutiatingly bad are bestsellers. But I've become more sophisticated in my old age. I don't even open books like 'The Davinci Code' anymore and when people recommend such books, I just smile politely. During the time I worked at the library, John Grisham and Danielle Steele always headed the bestsellers' list. They seemed to release new books about every week and a half then. Danielle Steele was very bad, but not bad enough to qualify for the worst book award. I did learn a very simple rule for judging mysteries by the cover while at the library. First, read the first page of the book. If there is a spelling or grammatical error there, save your eyes. It won't get any better. If there is egregious, exploitative sexism on the first page, save your time. Then glance at the back cover. If the author is holding a cat or cats, put the book down and walk away. In the days that I read science fiction and fantasy, I learned to eschew any book that had a first line something like "Grachilimuki, from the planet Fvrin, was no ordinary spaceman." Having to make up stupid words just showed a paucity of imagination.

I loved The Art Forger, did not like Language of Flowers, too depressing. I like interesting and happy.

Though there are some very sad, tears streaming down my face for me, parts in the beginning, I'm really enjoying reading One Summer by David Baldacci. I'm about 2/3rds through right now. It's been hard to put down.

Got a few of those recommended, but many of the others are checked out - a good sign. Might buy "The Art Forger."

Coincidentally, as I was driving home from the library, they were interviewing an author on the radio about her new book "The Bear." It sounded fantastic, so I will look for it next time.

One of my favorites, but older, The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.
Another all time favorite, The Thirteenth Tale.

Of course, if you havent read the Hunger Games triology it is really fun...

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - but be careful, you'll get hooked! The 8th book in the series is coming out this summer.

I haven't read any of the above except The Time Traveler's Wife (better than the movie), skimmed through The hunger Games to see if appropriate before DS read them (yes, but DD too young). That's more teen lit than chick lit.

Have you read The Secret Life of Bees, The Memory Keeper's Daughter? I didn't care for The Mermaid Chair, but I'm waiting for The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd to become available at our library.

This isn't chick lit, but I'm reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. A great story with such interesting characters, and I've really been drawn into it. It's a big book, so maybe not the best to travel with unless you have a Kindle.

Oh, yeah, the e-readers are great for travel (though last year I brought Team of Rivals and another big book on Lincoln as Commander in Chief on drive to Gettysburg). Just hard to read some things on them - Autobiography of Mark Twain was one but I struggled through it since it was so huge I didn't want 10-lb book on my lap. The Quantum Universe e-book just never made it too far though I checked it out twice, so I just picked it up in hardcover Friday (along with The Ghost Map that I saw another GWer recommend). Finishing Fast Food Nation now.
