New to Embroidery - have viking rose and tons of questions

I'm as beginner as it comes and I have a few questions that I hope someone can help with, as I'm driving my local Viking Rep insane..

How on Earth do I embroider a ready made item? For example if I wanted to embroider a t-shirt, how do you hoop it so that it doesn't hit the back of the t-shirt?

Hi sofie99,
Is this a new machine and did you get an instruction booklet with it? If you did it should tell you how to hoop the article and then you need to gather up the article by rolling it up and away from the hoop so as not to embroider through to the back side. Now I have a suggestion you can go to several embroidery sites and they have tips and techniques on embroidery with examples. Read back through some of the questions and answers on this site. I refer to them all the time and enjoy reading different guide lines and pick the best to suit my project. Don't give up, most of your knowledge will come from trial and error and this forum. Hi there and welcome. I'm new to the area as well (two months). Gardening in Colorado was a challenge- but in the winter months, not the summer! Horse manure is easier to tote when dry- lighter. When using it in Colorado, I did hear that there was some concern that the worming meds given to the animals could affect the worms in the garden. I didn't find that to be the case. Horse manure is best composted- usually it is too "hot" for most plants- will burn them fresh but my roses loved it in any form. As for tree trimming- we moved into an old house with a bunch of neglected gardens and 4 weeks after we got in we re'd a nastygram from the city- trees on the outside of the courtyard were in the powerlines. Those got trimmed for free but the city contractors hacked away. Then the city street manager called- what was left of the trees was hanging too far down over the street... I paid $350 for them to trim 5 trees. Not a complete trim, just the branches hanging in the street. Oh, and that included one tree that was so hacked up by the city that the arborist I hired had to remove it. It was basically a trunk with one spindly limb. I looked for someone licensed/bonded/insured with "no topping" in their ad and a-okay with the BBB. They wanted the same amount to trim a 15 ft long, 1 1/2 story tall hedge (labor intensive, ladders required) so we passed on that and think we may be able to deal with it ourselves. But- the quote was free so you can call around. As far as starting seeds in the chicken containers- it seems mighty hot and things have been drying out so fast that it might work but only when things are cooler. I've got some things I'd like to start myself but I am waiting. Even tough stuff like lantana is struggling during the establishment period. I know in Colorado they recommended no trees closer than 5' from the foundation. Here I have a historic house with multi-story jujube trees 2ft from one corner of my house- no trouble EXCEPT it's a flat top roof and it's a weekly job chasing derbis off the roof (I'm rather chicken and make my husband do this) as it clogs the drains. If you have a flat top, you might want to consider this problem. I don't have answers to the rest of your questions but I hope I helped a bit. The worm culture sounds interesting! I,m just an occasional visitor to this forum but most of the people on here seem to have veggies as a major interest. I think you might get more responses if you posted on the perennials forum, perhaps the rose questions on the rose forum, other shrubs on the trees and shrubs forum. I'll start with bulbs..if they're mushy they're pretty much toast, callas would not be hardy in your area. Iris should be fine, most true lily bulbs should be fine. Glads or dahlias are likely goners as well. I'm not much of a rose person myself and trumpet vines are marginally hardy here. I wish you luck, you may want to contact your county extension service and see if a master gardener might be willing to meet with you and help answer some questions and perhaps help you id some of the plants etc. Also, just an FYI and I mean no disrespect to your dad, I'm sure he was a terrific gardener but the term Master Gardener is one given to people who have completed training through your state's land grant university and are a branch of the university extension program. In MN they volunteer 50 hrs. the first year and 25 each year after to educating the public about horticulture. Anyway, best of luck to you and I'm sure your dad would be thrilled to know you will be caring for his plants.

If I can make my grocery store mini flourish I'd like to begin buying some really nice ones from suppliers. Hi! I just wanted to let you know that a lot of the time the grocery store and florist minis aren't as hardy and easy to keep as a lot of the named varieties. Grocery and florist minis are usually kept in a very pampered environment and then forced to bloom heavily so that they will sell well, which can stress the plant. The nurseries that raise them can afford to artificially heat the plant's environment and use lots of chemicals to keep them looking nice so they don't focus on choosing plants that are known for being hardy and healthy. So if you have trouble with the grocery ones, don't give up yet! Look at catalog descriptions to see if they say things like "vigorous", "healthy foliage", or "disease resistant" when you are picking your plants and you should have good luck with them. :)

I didn't buy the CD because I didn't want the thread kit that ran the whole thing up to almost $150 with tax. I have enough thread and do hand cross stitch with every DMC color known. I discussed this with the dealer and told her the colors were off according to what the statues colors are and why I didn't want the thread kit, just the CD. The CD embroideries were licensed by the convent who owns the Hummel rights and digitized from the original paintings done over 60+ years ago...paintings probably have never been cleaned although archieved so you know the colors are off, especially on skin tones. The figurines are painted with oxide glaze colors I prefer.

Sofie - didn't you get free lessons with your machine?
I have Viking machines and they offer unlimited classes and help here.

One thing that I learned when embroiderung things that you don't want the hoop outline to show or- if you want to sew in a awkard place-use the sticky back stabilizer in the hoop only and then place the garment exactly where you want your design to be-press it firmly in place-baste around if you have learned that trick, or just make sure that the fabric is stuck down and sew away. This is a great technique for putting designs on collars and cuffs too.
You can also use the water soluable stabilzer that just washes away, I find that I am using that more and more.
It comes from the Viking dealer in a large roll and is called Aqua Magic.

Can you tell me how to monogram on knit shirts. I have tried several tshirts and the fabric pulls and skips. Do I need to use a different stabilizer or a piece of fabric behind the original fabric.

Bryanno-you need a stabilzer under the shirt and one on top also. You can use a Totally Stable underneath or a Tear Away and on top Solvy.
I have sometimes used the Sticky back stabilzer in the hoop only and 'stuck' the garment to to sticky stablizer this is good for those hard to get to areas.

and dont forget when embroidering on knits...use a new, BALL point needle...can sometimes make all the difference

My Mom has a viking rose and she use to embroider but she hasn't for a long time. Now she is starting again and she is having some problems rememberig some parts, so she is trying to find someone she can talk to over the phone to help instruct her why she is doing it? we are in Springfield Mass. area. Thank You
