This isn't practical for everyone, but my parties always have a wide variety of people- veterinarians (I work at an animal hosptial), computer people (Dh is a computer game designer), family, neighbors, long-time friends. The way we keep people mixing is that we have a lot of things going on in every room. Our kitchen is tiny, but we recycle the bottles in there, so people mingle while disposing their bottles. In the dining room we set up a buffet table and keep several chairs around so people can chat while eating. In the living room we have a sofa and 2 chairs which usually are for people listening to music but sometimes we have karaoke. And we have a pool table in what was supposed to be a den. In the garage we have classic arcade games. Basically, there is something for everyone but we don't force people to mingle by having staged games or anything like that. People just get to know each other by waiting to shoot pool or play video games or getting food and drinks or singing or whatever. Like I said, not entirely practical for everyone (not too many people have pool tables and video games), but you could set up areas with different things to do in each one. I like having all the food and drinks in one place because it forces people to move around. That's what works for us, anyway. Another friend has successful parties on a regular basis, with the vet crew and a lot of musicians and his other friends. We all mingle a lot too because he usually has the barbeque going (bring your own), horseshoes, badmitton, a bonfire, singing (real pros- a lot of fun to watch) and sometimes he gets us to bring the karaoke machine too. Same concept- lots of things going on for people to do without forcing people to play party games together. In both cases, you never really want to just leave because there is so much going on all the time. Good luck with the party.

Oh my gosh, Holligator! You've still got the island sketch! I'm still planning on the cafe table, and I think with this island design it will work out well. I don't know if you recall, but you all also convinced me to add the back door to the porch, and to separate the fridge from the freezer so that the fridge would be convenient to the sink and stove. It made for some tense moments trying to design that wall of stacked cabs, but the carpenters came through with some really creative ideas there. And having the door has already been great. I can't believe I was set to skip that. And thank you, thank you for the link to tsdiver. That's the one I was remembering, but couldn't find it. I'll print out those pics as ammo when I go talk to soapstone people. I can't imagine anyone finding that island anything but gorgeous. Lavender Lass, that's a beautiful picture. It calls to my inner Victorian. I thought about switching to wood for the island, but I like the way the wood looks with the sun coming through the windows, and I love the idea of soapstone across from the stove for both baking purposes and for landing hot pots. Holligator has given me confidence that I can make the soapstone work. Dretutz and Irishcreamgirl, thank you for the kind words. I think you're both right that its the floors and maybe the fireplace stone that seem to want a deeper color than cream. I keep coming back to the word "muddy" but that's not accurate, I think maybe muted is better. I'm going to check out BM "honeymoon." And Irishcreamgirl, I've been hoping to work those floor in somewhere forever. I'm also hoping to put the pavers on my front porch to continue the herringbone theme.

heck yeah! I have a decent sized fig tree that I add a cage around and then fill with straw for the winter.... so for the past few years instead of having to pay for straw... i just keep on eye on the fall straw decorations of my neighbors. After thanksgiving, I will collecting my leaves… and I end up getting a bales of straw…. Corn shocks. This year I also found someone that wanted to clear out their fall pumpkin collection from their front porch. They had a few pallets worth of all the weird types…must have cost a fortune. I snagged as many as I could to have them rot down on the veggie bed. I do like getting free stuff… probably to a fault. If my DW and I are out and see an old bale of straw on the side of the highway that probably fell off the side of a truck… she will ask as jest… “you want me to pull over”

Our 40th "Orphans" Thanksgiving and other news

In October Geo and I celebrated 40 years together and 6 years of marriage. This month we celebrated another milestone with our 40th Thanksgiving dinner. We started when we first were together having people over that had no where else to go, or weren't welcome by family, to our house for dinner. For many of those years we'd do the turkey on the spit over the charcoals, but finally had to stop that three years ago as it got to be too much for us. Can't believe today it's been 40 years. Even though I'm dog tired at the end of the day, I can't imagine our Thanksgiving being any other way. On a down side, my sister-in-law passed away last Tuesday. It wasn't unexpected, as she'd been told by the doctors to stop drinking and smoking but what did the Effing doctors know? Memorial service is tomorrow, but told my brother there was no way I could make it. Especially since I only learned about it yesterday. He realized that and apologized that someone didn't let me know sooner. Even if I had, I doubt I'd have been able to either fly back or drive. Home is in MI and big storm headed that way. I'm glad I can't make it because from what my great-niece tells me, there might be some family drama at the service. Just what's needed at a time like that. Makes me appreciate our family that Geo and I have acquired over the years. Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving. Now to try and get the house decorated, cards done and out and ready for Christmas.

It was 30 for me... If anyone asked my age I'd tell them it was none of their business and I wasn't polite about it either... LOL

Thirty four years later and I still tell everyone I'm only 39... ( Hey, it worked for Jack Benny.... LOL )

Oh my gosh! Thanks! I survived my Birthday no problem. My husband surprised me with a dozen orange roses, a cake (lopsided but delicious), a Starbucks card for my Latte fix, and some money to go shopping. I did spend the day shopping and I'm sure it was better than crying - I got a Ralph Lauren skirt I have been dying to own, but refused to pay $139.00 for! (can you believe!) for $25.00 on the clearance rack at Macys. He also tried to get me my favorite blizzard from Dairy Queen, he went to 5, but they were all closed. He also gave me 2 cookbooks, "Better Homes and Gardens Prizewinning Recipes" and Betty Crocker Heart Healthy Cookbook". I can't wait to read them. My son gave me a Borders gift card to buy more cookbooks. And two of my favorite restaurants gave me a $20 and $25 girt cert. It was a fun day, although I did spend a bit of time on my Gazelle to make up for the extra (yes two!) piece of cake.

The most difficult thing was that my best friend was not here, she moved to Arizona in the summer, so we could not go out and celebrate together. A day shopping is best when your with a good friend.

You all are great! Thanks again!

Just wanted to say thanks again to y'all, you put a smile on my face!:-)
It is a little intimidating coming on this forum at first, y'all seem to know each other really well. I feel like I belong!

Riverrat, my favorite blizzards are M&M with no chocolate syrup, and French Silk Pie! Can't wait for March when our local store reopens!

Linda, I don't think I'll worry about 50 yet!

Chase, even if you want to forget your B_day, Someone will probably remember!

Compumom, you are definitely right!

Rita, my MIL is also "39", My husband is 43 though. We're not sure how that happened!

Donna, glad to know you made it through 40 unscathed!

Terry, it wasn't painful at all. In fact, if school wasn't back in on Monday, I would not have even realized I turned 40 yesterday!

Boo, you are absolutely correct (but it is kinda a big number!LOL!)!

Shaun, God Bless You! I know plenty of people who have had children at 40 and better and I have a huge amount of respect for them. I could barely keep up with my son when he was a toddler, and I was in my mid twenties! But they all seem much younger than those of us with older children. I think playing with babies makes you younger!

San, thank you for thinking of me!

Michelle, I love the sparkly birthday cake! I wish I could figure out how to do that! Maybe my son can explain it to me!

Ann, Jessie, Woodie - thank you for your lovely birthday wishes!

Wow, I'm even later than Diane, but wish you a very, very happy birthday nonetheless. It sounds like it was wonderful, and all those cookbooks are perfect.

Pssst. Our Dairy Queen in a neighboring town is open ALL WINTER!!! I like the just plain vanilla, though.

Annie,
I am so jealous! The Dairy Queen that opens earliest in our area is 5 miles away and reopens Feb. 15th. My husband was so annoyed that he could not get me my two favorite blizzards, it was so sweet that he tried so hard! Thanks!

Diane,
Thank you too! And no, it was not painfull at all, but Sunday was! I twisted my ankle! I went 40 years without ever hurting an ankle bad enough for it to swell up, and the day after my 40th birthday I twist my ankle bad enough to make it swell up like a birthday balloon! Sigh. And it was 60 degrees here yesterday and Monday and I could not go out for a walk! Double sigh. But, I am suppose to stay off my feet so I have been spending hours reading my new cookbooks!
