A Dead Rat In My Bathroom for SEVEN Months!
Comments (30)Replying to anyone with similar issue or: HU-171861020 “last year We have exactly the same problem in 2021. Rats in the loft, poison deployed, dead rat and smell in the upstairs bathroom and downstairs utility room before Christmas. Thought it was going as now in January but seems to be coming back! How is this possible? Horrible sickening smell thats lingered now for over a month” …… I live in a 30O yr old house which suddenly developed mice issues during the pandemic. My home shares a crawlspace with another attacked house and they were having mice and putting poison in crawlspace. Well, either a town of mice or a giant rodent ate the poison and burrowed (I believe) under my bathroom floorspace. The smell of death started a week after poison had been placed. I thought it was a plumbing issue and wasted $400 on wax toilet rings! none of the plumbers thought it was the sewer lines. Dead animal is what they all said. Called pest contol and for $300 he told me to close up holes in my foundation. well, this was during delta/omicron Nov surge and also impossible to get contractors. Finally had foundation rebuilt, but was told they could not plug every hole and mice or rats woukd still get in. its been THREE MONTHS of stank in one bathroom. fans have helped, but the weather is below freezing so i cant air the entire house out. im just horrified that a rodent could take this long to decompose (gag. GAG) It is the bane of my existance. I suppose ill have to have the tile floor ripped up or maybe the walls, which I cannot afford on a fixed income, nor can I find available contractors near Boston. Everyone is putting on additions. Today, the smell, which had been getting milder, is back. Never a smell in crawlspace or sign of dead rodents, so they are def in floor/wall. I just can not believe this is happening. i will never, ever use poison again. i didnt even know it was there. Just venting as I’m petrified the arctic blast in the NE will bring in more disgusting RODENTS! Thank you, pandemic. You've made everything even more unbearable. Rant over, but know you are not alone if you have this issue. Thanks and sorry. i truly hate rodents and old houses. i pray most of you with past issues have solved them....See MoreBad Smell --- Dead Rat?
Comments (4)davidandkasie, Thanks for your post. The smell has been around for more than 2 weeks. My wife is much more sensitive to it than I am -- no surprise, because women are supposed to have a more sensitive sense of smell than men. To me it seems that the smell comes and goes, and I cannot figure out what that fluctuation might be due to. It's not related to when the AC blower goes on. I haven't had the HVAC duct cleaned even once in the 17 years we live here (the house is 23 years old). We were told that it is not necessary. Now I wonder. We do, however, put in expensive filters (FILTRETE) that are endorsed by the American Lung Association, and change them every 3 months as per directions. And our vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter. Our crawl space has a kind of musty smell, different from the smell in the house that we're worried about. The crawl space is well ventilated. We have a dehumidifier there, but used last about 10 years ago to dry it out after a water leak made a mess. Since then, we haven't felt the need to use it. But I might use the dehumidifier for a few days, just in case the problem is caused by humidity that's seeping in from the crawl space. It wouldn't hurt any to try that. Any other suggestions would be welcome....See MoreStopping wet earth smell from below house with rat proofing.
Comments (4)Why not 4 inches of sand over heavy sheet plastic?? A little story of my house in York Haven - The area under the two kitchens (28 x 16) is a semi-crawl space, closed in, no vents, no windows. The house is a "semi-detatched", but there is no division between under the kitchens as there is for the main 7/8 cellar and the neighbor has no separate access for his half of the space. So about three years ago, in an exploring mood, I removed the access plywood and discovered the sweetest dryest air in the crawl space under the kitchens, it was wonderful!! A cheap 24' ladder, some old oil cans and a 30' long board were stored there, for how long, God only knows. There was no rust, and no rot ! Only the York County, PA clay soil, and decent access to the water and gas lines and lots of storage space for the packrat !...See MoreWhen Do Rats Start Smelling
Comments (10)It was my parents' home and they still have the mice, just fewer. They've always had mice all the years I lived there until now, LOL! The house is in the middle of the woods, and during the cold months it seems more mice come in because it is warm. They are getting in through some kind of openings, probably around roof eves or near windows under siding where something isn't sealed well. The problem with rodents is they can chew through so many things that it's hard to find something that will work to block openings. My parents have also had squirrels get in and those make way more noise than the mice when they are in the walls/ceilings. My sister's house had mice, but then their cat noticed the mice and there are less/no mice now. :-) I wouldn't let my pups go after mice in my home though in case they had recently ingested poison from somewhere else. Not to mention fleas or other parasites. I live in NYC and there are mice in the house sometimes, but we can get rid of them for a while with snap traps. We don't use poison after the experience with our pup at my parents' house. It works for a while. There are plenty of rats in NYC, but other than the subway stations, I've only seen then on the sidewalk near trashcans outdoors myself. Thankfully....See Moretwelvepole
