Hey Y'all, I went to Paula Deen's! (lots of pics)

DH and I had a long holiday weekend, so we decided to drive up to Savannah for some R&R. Of course we HAD to check out Paula Deen's The Lady & Sons restaurant. I would have to say the dinining experience there was more of a novelty than really good. The food was...meh. Okay. It came across as more Cracker Barrel than anything else, but it was one of those "try it once" experiences.

We checked out her gift store and I bought her memoire. That woman sure has worked hard for where she is today! She suffered from agoraphobia for almost 20 years.

We also went to her brother's restaurant Uncle Bubba's Oyster House and it was FABULOUS!! It was so good, we went there twice! I highly recommend it, especially the chargrilled oysters!

We did a lot of touristy stuff, sight seeing and such. It was COLD for us Floridians, let me tell you! I had to buy a scarf and we layered up. Hey y'all up north, don't laugh!

I even got a picture of a ghost, I think. We were doing one of those ghost tours inside the Sorrel-Weed house, which is supposedly an actual proven and documented haunted house. The Sci-Fi channel did a story on this house or something. Anyway, we were in the basement and it was pitch black...there were no lights except the ones coming in from the patio. I took this picture in the dark with my flash and I think there is an "orb" right about where the door handle is (a little above to the left).

Either that or it's dust. :-)

Anyway, it's glad to be back and I'd highly recommend going there if you get a chance. Back to reality and work tomorrow since we didn't win the lottery (again!) :-)

Sounds like you had a good time and that's what matters. I've heard many times that Paula's restaurant isn't that good.

We're shivering here in Alabama too.

If you think it's a ghose, Kathy, it's a ghost. I believe you, although I always told my girls I wasn't afraid of the people who were already dead, it was the ones who are still living that scare me!

I'm not surprised that "The Lady and Sons" wasn't fabulous, if her show is an indication, she's a country cook and that's what I would have expected at the restaurant, I guess. I've never had chargrilled oysters, now THAT I'd like to try.

that last photo with the fountain is lovely, it looks like you had a nice time in spite of the cold weather. (grin)

George, Jerreth certainly is having a challenging week. It sounds like the power might make it back on before you get home. What wonderful friends y'all have.....loaning Jerreth the RV with its' generator. I'm glad Jerreth is going to be able to save the frozen food. And, putting the refrigerated food in the 5-gallon buckets was a brilliant idea. That's a long way to haul water. So, I guess the two of them are building some serious muscle tissue.....and they don't even have to drive to "the gym" to do it. I know that you are doing terrific work at the Bible Institute and you are fortunate to have a spouse who shares your faith and supports your efforts. It can't be fun to be the one who is "home alone" at this time of year with the risk of ice storms, and I admire her so much for being willing to do it. You said that this is one of the "prices" which you wish y'all didn't have to pay, and I understand that, but we don't really get to choose the price we pay or the challenges we face. I know that Jerreth will come through this challenging period just fine and I suspect she won't even "rub it in" too much that you were off in sunny Mexico doing the work of the Lord while she was here dealing with the mixed blessing of having frozen moisture fall. Look at it this way: The good news, George, is that while you are away in Mexico, all your trees got watered. The bad news is that they got iced too. Carol, I am glad you are home close to your storm shelter. I cannot imagine being in the RV during severe weather. The photos and video we saw of the demolished trailer park last night was sobering. It reminded me very much of Lone Grove after the EF-4 tornado hit it a few years back. I am appreciative of all the technology too. The storm spotters sure had these storms figured out even before they really started developing and were in place to provide incredible video and lots of warning for folks who were watching and listening to them. Some of them were closer to storms than I've ever seen them before. Once Reed's family had to seek shelter, Tim, Chris and I did nothing but track the storms via media and chaser reports, each using some tech device. The TV was on The Weather Channel, which used lots of KFOR's live reports, we were in constant communication with friends affected by the storm via smartphones, and all three of us had our laptops or tablets tuned in to various weather websites too. It is incredible what we can see live and in real time. The NWS warned us for days that this was coming and I believe all the warning saved many lives. Wbonesteel, maybe today you can post more photos before the next storm hits. They could provide inspiration and encouragement, especially for anyone with a damaged or destroyed garden who is going to have to start over from scratch. Also, this was such a stressful event, even for those of us watching it unfold from the safety of our homes far away from the damage. Looking at garden photos is a great form of stress relief!!!! Hey James, I haven't seen you here much lately. I am sorry the weather is making it so tough for you to garden this year. Some years it is just so hard to get the planting done in the spring. I think you are absolutely correct in believing your excess rainfall has affected the sweetness of your strawberries. That happens with lots of other veggies and fruit too, including melons and tomatoes. At least y'all are out of drought there. My county is still in extreme drought with a tiny portion "only" in severe drought and it is ridiculously dry. It is hard to have a good garden in these conditions. I sure am dreading the summer months. I have had to water more in May than I've ever watered in May since moving here. Despite watering, even the ground in the garden is cracked, which is rare. Usually it is only the ground outside the garden that cracks. We likely will get some rain here in Love County today or later this week and we surely will appreciate every drop. Dawn

Paul Prudhomme changed his recipes over a decade ago, and I tried watching his revised show, but he took it to an extreme that I thought was unnecessary. However, he is a good comparison and is what I thought of first. I have fond associations with Southern accents - it reminds me of some of my roommates at Rice. I no longer live in "Y'all" country, and I never used that word much even when I did, but I do not find it nearly as annoying as when people say, "What I'm going to do next is I'm going to..." instead of saying "Next I'm going to..." Or when people say "actually" twice or more in one sentence. There was a woman on the Steven and Chris Show that did that last week, and I had the change the channel because of her. Another word (not a real word) that annoys me no end is "vinegar-ette". It seems that chefs are deliberately taught improper English, and I think they should be made to take speech classes (or get speech therapy) like the class I had to take for my Interior Design degree. I do like Paula Deen, but I revise her recipes when I make them. I think her cheesecake recipe is fine as is, but I would not make it very often. I find it endearing that Paula calls her son "Son". To me, it shows motherly love. It's better than using "DS" on a forum, as "DS" can mean "son" or "sister", and it always gets me confused. Giving children numbers is even worse since pseudonymns are always an option. I had an uncle who had pseudonymns for everyone, but then he was rich, eccentric, and childless and could get away with it. Annie, I love the olive wood Paula Deen spoons you sent me!!! Larry the Cable Guy has made a career using a fake southern accent - he was born in Nebraska and has a midwestern accent in his normal voice. I wish Paula the best and hope she will be able to get this under control. Lars

OMG, Steve and limequeen, I am sooo sorry, I somehow didn't get the email letting me know they were new replies on this thread! I need to check my spam folder again. Each time they upgrade my email app, that kind of crapola happens :( Better late than never, I guess, but limequeen that calamondin is so friggin cute! :) And, O-M-G, Steve, that is a BIG watermelon, lol. You don't want to drop that on the way down (btw, have you lost your mind, carrying this canoe from your rooftop on a LADDER?) You have more courage than I, starting trees from seed. Kathy, I had the identical experience (Lady & Sons vs Bubba's) but I knew ahead of time. Isn't Savannah fabulous! But I have rarely been as cold as when we went there last spring when Raymond took his college team. I really don't know how his players managed playing in that freezing wind. In between the games, the parents were scurrying trying to find sweats, skull caps, and long underwear for the girls.

This past summer we were driving to Denver and went through Memphis. We went by Neely's BBQ restaurant(Food network show) and decided to stop for the novelty factor as you said about Paula's place. It wasn't impressive at all-sad actually.

Same here, for her restaurant. Not impressed. Loved the Pirates House restaurant, though.

Love the pictures! Savannah is such a pretty town. We went during the summer on a day trip from Hilton Head and when we got to the Lady and Sons at 10:00, they were already done taking lunch reservations. So we looked around inside and I bought some souvenirs. Maybe next time!

That's definitely a place I'd like to see and your pictures make me want to go more than ever. It won't be hard for me to steer clear of Paula Deen's place. I can't stand the woman.

Those oysters at her brother's restaurant are some of the best I've ever had. My SIL told us about them, so we skipped Paula's restaurant and just went straight for those delicious chargrilled, butter and garlic drenched oysters.

We did a tour of Savannah and Charlotte 2 years ago. I couldn't believe the lines for Paula's. We loved the beautiful squares of Savannah, bnoth cities are great walking cities. The food in Charlotte was better but we enjoyed Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House a lot. Not high end but all the Southern vegetable dishes were fun and good. Had little room for the fried chicken. If you go to Savannah you should really try Mrs. Wilkes. (Always a line but it moves fast.)

Yes Annie, I totally "went off the wagon" diet wise this weekend, but we walked like 5+ miles each day. Back and forth to the hotel. That has to count for something!

The chargrilled oysters are grilled in the half-shell, then drizzled with garlic butter and parm cheese. You would think this would overpower the oysters, but it didn't; they tasted like little grilled steaks. To die for! Usually I don't like my oysters messed with, just straight-up, raw on the half-shell, but these were sublime.

I bought Uncle Bubba's cook book and he was there giving autographs, so I got it signed! It was worth it...some really good recipes in there and not as ooey-gooey as some of Paula's recipes.
