What I eat when I eat out (when dieting)

I KNOW what you eat when not dieting! Here's mine - hopefully we will get some new ideas from others.

McDonald's salad or chicken fajita (but they quit selling them here!)

Wendy's chili or rarely a junior hamburger (always an ice tea)

China buffet: We have a great one! Anything with loads of brocolli, nothing fried, no rice and fortune cookies do not count :-) Hot tea (I wish my tea was sooo good)

Any sub shop - 1/2 sub - usually turkey or roast beast, mustard, lettuce, oregeno. If the bread is too thick I toss half of it and fold the other half over the meat.

When traveling we have stopped at grocery stores for rotisserie chicken. It's pricy but in a pinch makes part of a good meal.

Grilled chicken, if salad, dressing on the side and no french fries but baked potato (nothing on it other than 1 tsp of butter).
Water - lots of it or tomato juice
Soup - sometimes
More often than not - grilled chicken in any form but no sauces on it or very little.
Rice if plain.

Chili's has this new dish called Quesadilla Explosion and it is teriffic but it has a little cheese quesadilla on it which of course is a no-no. The dressing is a cilantro-lime-balsamic and it is really good.

Quiznos has three low fat/low cholesterol sandwiches which aren't bad.

I love veggies but I'm afraid to get them when I go out because of the grease in them.

Whatever I get, I leave the potato off and don't eat any bread.

But am I loosing any weight? Noooooo. I could just cry.

I have quite a few things: Crispy Chicken Skin- I think my family believes I buy skinless chickens and roast them, by the time it hits the table there is no skin left. Pretzles dipped in soft cream cheese Toasted Peanut Butter and Honey sandwiches. I put peanut butter and honey between 2 slices of bread then butter the other sides and throw it in a skillet to toast the bread and melt the peanut butter. OMG so good. Ramen noodles- I'm guilty Buckeyes- I make a big batch then hide some in the veggie crisper to get cold and grab one when no one is looking. Sue Bee canned Chicken and dumplings- I can only get them when I go down home so I will buy a few cans while I am there and eat them all by myself. Ham sandwiches with horseradish mayo and melted swiss cheese.

DH and I always order the same pizza from our favorite place: Medium thin crust S.O.S. (sausage, onion, spinach). If I'm eating out I usually order something I'm not going to fuss over making at home. I like my own hamburgers, steaks, chops, chicken, etc. I'm a slow eater, and I can't eat much all at once, so those lunches of a cup of soup or small salad and half a sandwich (maybe egg or tuna salad on whole wheat) are *plenty* for me. I never have room for the 'sides' of slaw or fries or chips.

Iceberg or romaine lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, peas, broccoli, carrots, beans, sometimes turkey or chicken, and ocassionally cheese or walnuts are some of the things I add. Top it off with low-fat or no-fat dressing. Had a big salad with dinner tonight with lots of the above stuff in it and low-fat Sweet and Sour Poppyseed dressing. Yum....

We eat out every Sunday & sometimes during the week. We ate whatever we want but still lose. Sure not as fast but in no hurry. We average about 4 lbs a month & been doing that for 18 months now. When we took trips like Xmas we gained so really lost more as we lost that back. We are getting ready to take a 3 month trip to Alaska & that really concerns me as we will be eating out most of the time. This will be a real challange. I don't want undo in 3 months what it took 18 months to do. We will be in a motorhome so hopefully 2 meals will be OK but know the ones we will be traveling with eat out 1 meal everyday..even when they are home.

I've been lurking here for awhile but just had to jump in here. Been doing my own version of Weight Watchers (old exhange plan) since Jan 6th and have lost 19.5 lbs. to date.

I'm afraid the road to weight loss will get tougher any day now since I haven't hit a plateau yet.

My point to posting on this thread is that I've noticed so many here have all these things they stay away from and I detect some feeling of deprivation there.

I eat out several times a week including at the occasional greasey spoon. I eat everything. I can make a salad at home so other than one that comes with a meal I never have one eating out.

I do make choices though. If I want fries I'll get a turkey or clubhouse sandwich (no mayo). If I get a cheeseburger it's fruit or veggies instead of fries. Everything is ordered on the side....I'll add my own butter,gravy or dressing so I control and know what's on my plate.

I eat chicken or fish (even fried) when I want it and beef or pork when I don't.

When I get a sub I order the usual 6" and eat it all including cheese but leave off mayo,oils and fatty dressings. Mustard and barbque sauce are my friends LOL.

I see peeps in restaurants afraid to order 2 fried eggs (about 220 calories) but who will "diet" on a 400 calorie bagel. They will throw away an 80 calorie dinner roll and eat a 250 calorie scoop of cottage cheese instead.

So I guess my answer is everything and I just want to encourage all who struggle along with me to get and keep these added pounds off to try to think of food as fuel we have a right to enjoy and to question some of the diet lore out there.

I haven't been here in some time but now that this site is FREE again I'm happy to be able to participate again :-) I did the South Beach Diet back in June and lost 10 lbs. I've since learned that as long as I stay away from the bread basket and do my best not to eat past 7pm I've managed to keep those unwanted pounds off. So in referance to this topic...I pretty much eat whatever I want on the menu, push the bread basket far far away, and I usually eat only half of what's on the plate and bring the rest home for the next night's meal. Sometimes hubby and I will even share a rich dessert.

Thai Food: Fresh rolls & tom yum soup (or chicken sate if they don't have fresh rolls -- spring rolls no way, they're fried)
