Granite installers came over today...well the hugh black spots were hugh chips and they just filled it with filler.

Is it unreasonalbe for me to have expected my granite to not have hugh chips and gobbed in filler? These were not discounted slabs but full price brand new slabs?

Tell them to come back and replace it. You paid for a new piece of granite and that's what you should get. Not a damaged piece. Or tell them to discount it (by alot) if you can live with it.
We just got done fighting with our granite installers too. They messed up the opening for our cooktop (cut the hole too big) and tried to get out of replacing it by coming up with ideas to "make it work". And we had two pieces that didn't even match and had a crack all the way through right next to a seam.
In the end they made it right and took out all the bad pieces and replaced them.
I'm sure it was very expensive mistake for them but we paid (a lot) for good granite and expected to get it.

So the installers came back and removed the black crap that they filled in a hugh chip on the edge with and replaced it with "peanut butter" and they had a 3 year old do the work. Are you kidding me? How fustrating..seems like most people have a good experience..I decide to pay top dollar for a quality fabricator and good slabs and I get quality and service that sucks.

Are you sure it's granite? I don't believe granite can chip like that from normal installation stress.

It looks like some kind of "engineered" quartz solid surfacing material. That stuff is glued together so I suppose they can glue it back together.

No matter the material type, it's shoddy workmanship and needs to be addressed between you and the outfit you chose to take on the project. What do you want anyone here to say or tell you outside of contacting the company and have them make it right or you will pursue legal action. If you have no written contract or worse if you have paid these "fine craftsmen", I dont know you have much recourse other than getting a reputable outfit in to either make the repairs, or simply start over all at your expense. Bummer! Valuable learning lesson to seek out reputable outfits by checking referalls and actually seeing hands on current and past projects done by the outfit.

Sharp edges of Quartz counters tend to chip during installation and must be repaired unless they are covered by a back or side spash. The important issue is how good the repair is, not how it looks during the repair. I'm not qualified to judge a repair in progress and I doubt the OP is.

The fact that the backsplashes dont align properly, the gap between them shown, the sloppy silicone above the"peanut butter" repair, which in this case probably is the "finished" repair, all gear towards these installers being "hacks" and the outfit needs to make it right by getting someone in there that knows what the heck they are doing and make it right, simple as that!

Sierraeast, I was just trying to figure out if this was common practice. The installer who came over again last night was a jerk and told me I was ridiculous. We were told we could mark the pits in our kitchen black galaxy granite. So I marked about 100 pits (A pit is something you catch your fingernail on right??) The installer said he wasn't going to fix them because it would take him to long. Then he proceded to tell me that that is how all granite is and that all granite comes chipped and they patch it up. Now I am trying to get a hold of the granite store owner and of course he can't take my call or return my messages.
After getting a light on the granite when we were looking for pits I am now second guessing the seam job in the black galaxcy
Should the seam look better or is this common????

Everything about your install is bad...and they are trying to pull a fast one on you. They need to fix this....your granite is a mess. And, that seam is heinous.

I have New Venetian Gold Granite and it did not come with chips.
Also, the seam on the Black Galaxy should blend so you do not see it.
I have Black galaxy on my FP and do not see any pits.
It appears they badly installed inferior granite in your home.

Ask them if they would like your photos plastered all over the Internet as examples of their work.
Or show them this post, and note that you have not yet mentioned the name of the company that did this LOUSY work -- but that if it's not made right, you certainly will.
You haven't said anything inflammatory or libelous...

But yeah, that work is CRAP and those installers seem to lack the knowledge, skill and care to do a decent job.

Not being familiar with granite, but have built houses, it seems to me this is not what you ordered. I would contact the owner of the store, and also find out if the installers were licensed contractors. If not, you might contact your city/county/state building dept. Are you in an area that requires building permits?
Start now documenting everything, who, when, what was said, so you have back up.
I know my DH would not accept this, neither should you.

Crap. Make them remove it. Demand all money back. Do not take a replacement from this store.

Have you paid them in full yet? If not, just let them know they won't be getting their money until the job is done right! You'll be amazed on how fast their tune will change when they find out they won't be getting paid.
Oh and definately skip talking to the installers, go straight to the manager/owner. The installer just doesn't want to get in trouble when he has to tell his boss that he had to replace a piece of granite because he did a sloppy job.

Just a thought, are these licensed and bonded contractors? If now, why not? Does your area require them? What about the building inspectors and did they pass this for inspection? Not sure of your requirments, by DH retired BI, would never pass this.

It will pass inspection -- building inspectors aren't there to be sure a good looking job gets done, just a job that's up to code. The install is awful, but it's an aesthetic issue, not a structural or safety one.

My friend has Atlantic Green granite in her kitchen that chips like crazy, so granite can chip on the edges like that but they should not have fixed it like that. My friends chips were repaired (at least the first ones that ocurred-she's given up on the rest) and the repairs aren't noticeable at all.

I'm still a laminate man. Extremely durable, attractive in some colors, and reasonably priced. Sometimes the new and improved is just a way to separate you and your money.

we had a different granite company come over to look at this schoddy work and see what they think and how much they would charge....they confirmed what we already knew...shoddy work! We are waiting for the new granite company to give us a price so we can tell the shoddy granite company how much they need to take off the price.
Amazing how much granite education I recieved in the 30 minutes the new company was at my house... I wasn't told anything about granite from the shoddy shop.

I had a similar shoddy installation once and made the guy take every bit of it out and repair the drywall, too! I threatened him within an inch of his life. He stood in front both me and the builder (even though we were paying for the granite separate from the builder, the guy still tried to help us out) and told me he'd fix it, then when the builder left told me to like it or lump it. I told him I'd dispute it with the credit card company (thank goodness we did it that way instead of cash!). The builder ended up getting me a check the next day, and the crap was taken out the day after that. I had another fabricator lined up and new stone purchased that same day and new countertops installed in three weeks... just a few days after I had to write a letter to the building dept. explaining why we had plywood counters and to please overlook them for the CO. LOL. We ended up getting a much better nicer job in the end.
