I learned to sew from my mother who and made most of our clothes and all our doll clothes. She saved a piece of the cloth of everything she made for us and my sister and I are now cutting all those pieces into squares for a couple of quilts. We laugh ourselves to tears in the process. We were all in 4-H. We also sewed in home ec. Now, however, we would never be able to have machines at the middle school level due to parents' safety concerns, but the home ec teacher still teaches kids to sew by hand. They make stuffed animals and do cross stitch. I teach my 6th grade art students to weave, and we all make woven bags with twisted cord straps. That being said, things that we learned at home are no longer common. I am no longer amazed by how many kids don't know what their clothes are made out of, or have absolutely no idea how to thread a needle (that pointy thingy), they don't know yarn from string, they have never heard the word "stitch" and it is not unusual to have one not know how to tie a knot (velcro shoes you know). Before I started teaching I would have never imagined I'd have to demonstrate to my classes how to take the end of a piece of yarn and start rolling it into a ball, but now I do it all the time. Amazing. Bravo to you all who make stuff with your kids - I suspect you read to them to!

I miss so many things that were so wonderful from my childhood. I lived on a small town street with a ton of kids. We had so much fun. We all walked to school together. Kids nowadays don't know what they are missing. I miss my grandma. I saw her for the last time on my wedding day, June 1, 1968. She died a week later. I miss my wonderful FIL. He was so much fun to sit and chat with. I wish my dad had been that way. I wish life would slow down. Everyone is in such a hurry. I can't go anywhere that someone doesn't have a phone hooked to their ear. They stand in the grocery isle. Please move aside!! I miss the drives in the countryside we used to take. I love taking the back roads instead of the super highways!! People don't have a clue what they are missing.

Well not quite a newbie, but IÂll bite. IÂve always been the artistic type and every job IÂve ever had was luckily a creative one. Window displays, photo styling, fashion productionÂthen I got married, had 2 wonderful little munchkins, bought our first (and only so far) house and became a stay at home mom. I didnÂt know an Oak tree from a Rhododendron when we first moved in about 16 years ago. So that gratefully gave me something new to learn. I was closing in on my last bit of patience with Barney the purple dinosaur and the Ninja Turtle dudes. So I learnedÂand learnedÂand learnedÂbecame a Master Gardener , volunteered a lot , was hired as a Hort Manager then left after a few years to start my own design business. In the meantime the kids grew. My oldest was graduating from high school and we still had the old original bathroom that came with the houseÂand IÂm talkin OLD. So I was introduced to the wonderful world of tileÂooooooÂaaaahhhhhh. Then glass tile! There was no stopping me at that point. Started the learning process all over again. Substrates and thinsets, caulk and grout. Finished the glass bathroom, floor to ceiling and in parts ceilingÂI loved it! Then I put it all aside, seeing as the bathroom was finished and all. Then about a year later (last winter) I was hit with some strange medical stuffÂso now IÂm on MS watchÂyech. Perfectly fine so far, but thought that I may want to rethink this garden design stuff, plus working for other people was kinda taking all of the fun out of it. So I jumped right in. I had been on the Design forums here for awhile and eventually found you guys. This is where my mosaic story beginsÂ
