In case you missed this notice at the top of the page:

Starting February 17, 2010 some GardenWeb users may notice a new form of advertising, called contextual advertising, within our forums. This means you may see some words appear with double underlining within a forum's messages; mousing over these words will open a small advertisement window. Here are some answers to commonly-asked questions about this type of advertising.

Is someone reading my messages to insert these links?

The in-text links that appear within the forums are automatically generated by our software and are based on keywords, so your privacy is maintained.

Why have these ads been introduced on GardenWeb?

In order to continue to offer free services such as GardenWeb's community, we rely on advertising to help cover the costs of running such a large and popular site.

I don't want to see these ads, can I disable them?

I've seen this other places too. Squidoo is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. It can be distracting, but understand why they have to do it. Providing an option to opt out is nice, but I probably won't - just don't cursor over the words and it's not a big deal for me.

With social media (where transparent identities are not only acceptable but expected) competing for attention and even quality content, it's probably getting tougher to maintain a site so it can function and stay relevant.

I've come across this on various websites. It's extremely annoying.

Well, I am still one of those without my personal e-mail addy listed on my member page, but can have e-mail sent to me through GW. In the past, I have had my addy listed and have had serious problems with spam mail that comes from other forums on GW. Since I post on quite a few of the other forums on GW, I found that some of them do have their fair share of spam type posts; advertising for various websites, products etc. When my e-mail addy was available for anyone to see, these posts would pop up on these other GW forums and within an hour or so I would have the spam coming to my e-mail box about the product, site etc. Once I realized where all this spam was coming from, I removed my addy from my member page, and that was the end of the spam coming from here. Hope you all understand why I no longer have my e-mail addy available to see, but as I said, you can send it through GW and I would say that 95% of the time I don't have a problem getting it. Fran

flgargoyle, go to your local grocery store and buy a box of Keebler Grasshoppers to satisfy your Thin Mint craving. They're the same cookie! Little Brownie Bakers is a division of Keebler. ABC Bakers, a division of Interbake Foods, is the other bakery making Girl Scout Cookies but they both have to use the same recipes. FWIW - Keebler Sandies "Simply Shortbread" are the equivalent of Shortbread/Trefoils. Keebler Fudge Shoppe Peanut Butter Filled cookies are the equivalent of Tagalongs/Peanut Butter Patties. I found relabeled Samoas/Caramel deLites, Do-Si-Dos/Peanut Butter Sandwiches and several other GS cookie varieties in a local bakery thrift store, of all places. I rarely buy cookies, though, because DH has no self-control when there are sweets to be had. LOL We prefer to donate cash directly to the local GS troop since they only get about 50 cents from that $4 box of cookies (and the troops often then get nickel-and-dimed half to death), or maybe we buy one box and pay with a $10 with the instructions that the additional $6 go straight into the troop treasury. I sold many thousands of boxes of cookies in my decade-plus as a Scout, but the cookie program and Scouting in general has changed a lot since the 1980s. A friend of ours signed up to be a troop leader a couple of years ago after going through the entire program from age 5 to 18 in the same era I did ("graduating" from Senior in the late 1980s) and quit in exasperation after less than two years.

They've actually attempted this a couple of times before. There was such an uproar and so many people opted out that they abandoned it.

So I went to the Opt Out Link (thanks graywings) and was immediately presented with a pop-up "Contact us" screen and message someone would respond shortly.

Is that what those of you who opted out saw and filled out?

I chose the OPT OUT and am also using Firefox, but I'm getting them. Is there a setting on Firefox that I need to change?

Same here. Although yesterday the word 'salad' in the notice at that top of the page was highlighted; today it's not.
