Agree the Super Bowls commercials weren't very special. Don't like the new E-Trade baby as much as the last one, either.

I'll have to admit, I've never really noticed the commercials during the Olympics. I do enjoy some of the winter competitions, but have not watched any yet. Perhaps if we were snowed in, I would, but we were out and about a good bit of the last 3 days.

I think it's a completely different situation. The audience for figure skating differs from the snowboarding audience. I worked on the Visa campaign, which is very "inspirational".

Idefixe, I wasn't talking about the differences in the Olympic sport's commercials, I'm talking about the difference in the overall Olympic commercials vs. the Super Bowl commercials. I've watched most of the Olympic sports so far off and on, including figure skating and snowboarding, and they're showing the same commercials.

I was raised in an Olympic village, (Lake Placid, NY), and am personally familiar with all of the winter sports featured in the Winter Olympics, so watching the winter games is always something I look forward to. I have friends who work as media commentators at the Olympics, and it's always fun to hear them on the air, as well as see competitors that I've met on the streets of Lake Placid.

And I agree, the majority of the commercials are tastefully done and interesting to watch!

Oh, and I think there are a lot of us (probably older) who watch and enjoy all the sports. Whether it is Nordic Combined, Biathlon, Luge, Downhill, Slalom, Ski Jumping, Figure Skating, Snowboarding, Speed Skating, whatever (except perhaps curling-never have quite gotten that-lol), I am watching and cheering. I love everything about the Olympics!

Cyn, Nordic Combined is my favorite by far! The athletes in that sport have got to be the strongest in all the sports combined.

Nanny, are you still in Lake Placid? I've only seen pictures of it but it looks beautiful. I have a friend who lives up there and he's always complaining about some stinging fly in the summer time. lol

Nothing is cozier than the Winter Olympics.

Oakleyok, Your friend is probably talking about black flies, their sting is painful and they can be a nuisance up there. We still have a home in Lake Placid which we visit every year, but we don't reside there year-round. I wish we did - it's a beautiful mountain community and incredibly scenic! Unfortunately, my husband's a born and bred southerner who claims to be "allergic" to cold weather! HA! He finds the winters up there intolerable, but I love the snow and winter sports so I go solo during the winter season.

Cyn, you're not the only one who "doesn't get" curling! That's got to be one of the most boring events possible, especially after seeing some of the wild daredevil events like snowboarding or luge!

Cyn & Oakley, what's with you guys?! Curling is the one sport I'm looking forward to, LOL! Curling at noon today -- it's been on my calendar for a week :)

Eight years ago, the US had a great women's team. They looked like they could crack open a beer with one hand and give you a good cut & perm with the other. When they screamed "Sweeeeeep!!!" you about grabbed your own broom. They had some fantastic knock-down-drag-out games with the Brits & Canadians, then met their match with the Swiss, who were equally tough cookies. I was hooked, and so were my work colleagues who also were dropping everything to watch the women's curling team. Lots of fun. The women's team 4 years ago was dull in comparison, admittedly, but I still enjoyed the sport. My son tried it in college and said it's a blast.

Anyway, back on topic, yes, the quality of the commercials are enjoyable, not as gimmicky or reliant on the gag as the Super Bowl commercials.

Oh, back to curling, here's some fun trivia: the men's team proclaimed SF 49er tight end Vernon Davis as honorary captain. He's taken up curling recently & loves it.

I understand. The audience for the Superbowl is not remotely the same as the Olympics audience. The Olympics audience is also very segmented. And in some cases, the Olympics ads are made for international viewers. I would never expect to compare the two events.

I can't say I've paid particular attention to most of the commercials during the Olympics. Except maybe the Visa ones, I love Morgan Freeman's voice!

But I did notice off hand at least one commercial last night that I had seen (and disliked) during the Super Bowl. It was one of the ones which portrayed the theme, "you're not enough of a man so take solace in our product".

It depicted a bunch of guys mentioning things they do which presumably they are forced to do in their relationship. The one quote that sticks in my mind is "I'll listen to your opinion about my friends, I'll even listen to your friends' opinion about my friends." After several of these type of statements, the gist of it is that the reason these guys put up with this is so they can drive some Dodge sporty-sports car.

There were no less than three different commercials for three different products during the super bowl which had this same theme. Ugh. I only remember one of the other two, pushing a miniature TV which the guy should carry with him when the female S.O. forces him to go shopping with her.

I'm guessing that they will be showing most of the SB commercials at some point during the Olympics in addition to the ones specifically made for the games.

Like cyn427 I love the Olympics and am interested in all the different events. I wish they would show more variety on prime time and let go of some of the figure skating. I took my kids (then ages 6 and 9) to Atlanta in 1996 for the Summer games. It was extremely memorable. So memorable in fact that the 9 yo who is now 22 went to Vancouver this weekend. He saw Biathalon and Luge. Very cool.

awm-LOL. I just KNEW it had to be my own shortcoming in "not getting" curling and CERTAINLY NOT the sport itself which I now understand will keep me on the edge of my seat-broom in hand-teeheee. Apologies to our northern neighbors who love it!!!

OK, I watched some curling yesterday. It looked like it could be pretty fun to do, but watching it wasn't quite as exciting as, say, speed skating. LOL. I mean, yes, it was interesting, but just not edge-of-your-seat exciting. Not that all sports need to be, but it sort of explains why it doesn't make prime time.
