What kind of door should I put at the top of the stairs?

I want to be able to completely shut off the upstairs and not heat or air condition the second level except when we have company. It is not possible to close off the stairs at the bottom due to the way the bottom landing and the last four steps are open to the dining room. Should we use an exterior door to assist with insulating between the conditioned and unconditioned space or should I not worry about losing a little bit of heat to the upstairs? I also need the door to be as wide as possible. What do you think would be the maximum width we could use? The stairs are 4 feet wide. What about french doors (double doors) so that when open, there isn't such a gigantic door swung open against the wall? Thank you.
