Galcos in Los Angeles sells a lot of soda that appears to be vintage or else otherwise obscure. In Temple, Texas (where I was born), you can buy Dr Pepper made with Sugarland cane sugar (also made in Texas) in the old formula and old bottles. Temple is one of two places in Texas that still makes Dr Pepper with cane sugar, and it's very popular with people from Austin, although Temple's distribution area does not go quite that far.

I've never had frozen chicken pot pies - that is pretty much an alien dish to me, as I have only had pot pies twice in my life, and those were very recent. I heard about them here and got curious.

I'm having trouble finding grapefruit diet Shasta soda, and so I've had to switch to diet Squirt. I hate Fresca. I used to drink Agua de Tehuacan (Toronja flavor) when I was a teenager in Texas and in my early 20s, but it is still around and has the largest percentage of fruit juice in its soda but is not diet.

I can't think of any food that I cannot find any more - just sodas! Or maybe certain flavors of ice cream, like Amaretto. It used to be very common - now not so much.

Wide plastic wrap in a home-friendly size. Why must I overlap two pieces of plastic wrap to cover a cake? It was so convenient I can't believe it's gone.

Those disposable things for cutting meat. Maybe 7 x 10 (they've been gone for some years) with an absorbent layer on top and a thick, almost hard, plastic underneath. Cut or trim some chicken on it and throw it away.

Liquid dish detergent with a bearable smell.

Hallmark Baked Beans - a kit with dried beans that you added some ingredients too - Mom always made them.

I liked those disposal meat cutting "boards" too, CC.

On the flip side - tonight we're going to a place for dinner that has creme de menthe parfait on the dessert menu - now that kind of takes me back!

Not quite food, but I wish they still sold loosies. DW refuses to buy a carton because that would "make" her an official smoker, and she always laments that she can't buy just one. So instead she buys a pack and smokes the whole darn thing.

cc: I recommend you give Palmolive Pure+Clear a shot. It's not fragrance free but it's close. As for the wide plastic wrap, I think you just need to make space for a non-home size. I do! And with one of those dispenser things I can grab a sheet without dirtying things up, even if I've got nasty chicken-y hands.

HALLMARK BEANS!! Can't BELIEVE I didn't have them in OP!?! My Grandmother would make them. Thinking they may have almost been before freeze dried stuff?? Partially cooked and dried, maybe. Seem to recall a packet of some kinda flavorings that you added to dried beans and some hot/boiling water... and then into oven. Nana always "doctored" them up some... I'm sure BACON was involved!

FOAS, I was tricked by Palmolive Pure + Clear! With a name like that, I thought it wouldn't smell much. I find its smell sickening ( and quite strong). Just plain lemon would be fine, but some years ago my old standby, Joy, changed from lemony to cheap-perfume-with-a-citrusy-base. Most liquid dish soap now has a perfumy quality. There's a watery store brand here that doesn't smell too bad, but it also doesn't cut grease. The best I've found is Ajax Lemon, and it isn't great at cutting grease either.

Interesting CC, while I smell it in the bottle, using it seems quite subdued. I just washed my hands with it and yes, there's a bit of a lingering smell but it's not strong at all or offensive. To me. Now the "original" green Palmolive, woowee now THAT smells! To each nose his own I guess!

Surely you can find an unscented dish liquid. I know my cousin uses something...I'll have to remember...I think it's Greenworks the free and clear but I'll ask. She is extremely allergic to EVERYTHING...I'll get back.

It's true I have not tried the really expensive brands.

I asked and the dish liquid is the Green Works unscented. I don't think it's a real expensive brand though, perhaps a bit more than Joy but probably only a dollar more. I could be mistaken but I think they sell it at Walmart. I'm pretty sure I've seen some others that were unscented too just at the grocery store or Walmart so not expensive. What about the old stand by Ivory? Some people can't handle any scent at all though. My cousin is extremely sensitive to fragrances so Green Works should be fine.

I remember a cookie called Jan Hagel (sp??). It was like a very thin, crisp graham cracker with almonds in it and topped with cinnamon sugar. Does anyone else remember it? Also, a salad dressing called Chelten House. We all liked it so much that my father would buy a case of it from the store near our summer house because we couldn't get it at home.

Never heard of Chelten House, but googled and it popped right to their web site.

I think I saw them at a Walmart Super Store awhile back....saw them on the shelf and didn't give it another thought.
I remember as kids we would make them on a Saturday night.

There are a lot of things that are still sold under certain names but even something like "Classic" coke is still a distant offspring. The ingredients for most products are no longer the same.

I miss middle east pistachios the most. They used to be all that was available but now they have to me mail ordered.

I miss the sewn shut bags of flour and sugar.

I was making a cake earlier and had to open a bag of flour, glued shut very well. Ended up with odd tears..it's now wonder I get flour on every thing...including me.

* Hunt's Chili Beans. (Website said they stopped making them.) They were the BEST in my mom's chili recipe. Now we have to use Bush's, as its the only canned chili bean that's close.

* Keebler Danish Wedding Cookies. My husband loves these. Once every 8 or 10 years, we've found a box, usually around Christmastime.

Re unscented dish soap. I use Dawn--cheap, cuts grease well and has no scent. I can't stand scented soaps for sink or laundry.

Re the Chelten House info--I never even imagined they were still in business! We were buying the stuff in the early 50s and I've never seen it since!

Cloudy: first thing I thought of for your dish soap was grainlady and the Money saving forum. Sounds like you might try making your own if commercial products don't work out

Decker brand hot dogs. As late as 1994, they were the official hot dog of the Texas Rangers Baseball Club. I ate them all my life, until I moved to New Jersey for four years. I came back in 1998, and this brand was like 'Nowhere Man' - it was like it never existed.

I wish I could find Pitter Patter peanut butter sandwich cookies. Whoever made them (I think maybe Keebler) also made a chocolate fudge sandwich cookie that was really good. The only time we ever got these (and chocolate milk) was when we went on a long car trip (like families did 40+ years ago) and Mom had to pack a lunch for us to eat along the way (she had to have something to keep four kids happy).

Spreadables turkey or chicken salad spread. Probably one of those things that if I had it now, it wouldn't be as good as I remember.

Frozen pot pies...ahhh, the memories. I lived on these as a poor college student -- didn't really care for them, but they were cheap.

I was going to say Brown Edge Wafers, too. Boo hoo. How about Zwiebach, those hard cookies that babies would teethe on. I'm not really looking for them, though.

Janet, I can remember living on those Morton Chicken Pot Pies when I first moved out & got my own apartment. I could buy them 5/$1.00. I was 17 and loved them although I would pick out every pea before starting to eat. (grin) Of course, in those days (1968), I could also go to Taco Bell and get a taco, burrito, and a small Coke with change from $1.00. I remember 'cause I did it 5 days/week on my lunch hour from Allergan Pharmaceuticals in Tustin, CA unless I splurged and went to Marie Callenders for a slice of pumpkin pie instead. Ah, to be young!

I remember the Pizza mixes but have never heard of most of these things.

Pam, Zweiback still exists (in the baby food aisle) but it has changed. Or my memory of it is wrong. I used it for a crumb crust and we decided we wouldn't do it again.

I guess its a plus we live in the area where we are known for our snacks.We can get just about anything,pizzas,candy the taffy etc.Pennsylvania,We have Snyders chips,prezels,Utzchips& pretzels,Revonah Pretzels,Gibbles chips, Doritos to name a few.
