Posts: Not Just for Structural Integrity Anymore
When we added on to the back of our house, we were lucky - there weren't too many glitches. One of the bigger ones, though, involved the visit of a structural engineer and a decree that if we didn't support the spot that used to be the back of the house with a big, clunky steel beam, everything could come crashing down around (and, maybe worse, we wouldn't get the inspector's approval).
The beam ended up being no big deal and now it gives us a handy spot to point to whenever someone asks where the old house ended.
Beams aren't the only helpful structural features, though - posts are actually quite common in construction and, handily enough, can even be pretty gorgeous:

This interior structural system looks extremely sound - and has a rustic feel that's very attractive.
I like the sharp angles of this space - it's got a Frank Lloyd Wright/ arts and crafts/ Mondrian vibe that is very cool.
This is a great example of how to incporate a post without ruining the lines of a room. This post was likely added for support, but because it's attached to a half wall, it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.
I love these thick porch posts.
But I also love this skinny wood post. Visually, it works perfectly with the fantastic view.
The construction of this home is amazing - it reminds me of high end wood furniture, but on a grander scale.
Speaking of grand scales, I have a feeling this place would take my breath away in person. The posts draw the eye up, giving the whole space a sense of awesomeness.
I can't tell the exact structural role of these metal posts, but aesthetically, I like the way they contrast with the wood to add a little modern edge.
Of course, not all posts are structural. I have to admit - this bed actually gave me the idea for the whole ideabook - and its posts don't even support anything. In theory, I think these posts would actually sound a little twee, which isn't my style. But in practice, I think they are really very cool.
