Does anyone know if Junket brand rennet tabs can be used to make cheese?

I just looked on Amazon and they want over $25.00 for a blister pack of rennet tabs. Wow! Our local WM does not have any.

Wow posts like this I am sure happy I live in Rural PA. The mennonite stores have just about every spice you need,bulk or in smaller containers. I just paid $4.45 a lb for pickling spices, a seasons worth of whole allspice for $2.40 Instant Clear Jel is $2.27 a lb Cook Type Clear Jel is $1.80 a lb, Rennet Tablets for $1.40 a box. I use the Dutch Jel for Pectin, that also is shelf stable over 1 year in bulk Regular is $2.85 a lb and the Lite for Low Sugar is $4.57 a lb. Ball lids are 1.50 a box. The grocery stores here sell canning supplies and the Ball Book. We have a large Mom-n-Pop Hardware Store Chain in the 5 county area. They have survived the Home Depot/Lowes/and Wally World. They just built a huge new store in the neighboring town. They know how to service customers, if you want 1 nail they will go get it for you and sell you one nail. There are always sales people there to help you, and if you can't find it, they will order if they have it from their supplier. Today I had to return a defective Candy thermometer, didn't have the recipt, there was a credit when I traded for something else and I was going to buy some candy at the counter to make even. I was told nope, don't worry here's your $2.45 back. Granted I know not to go there for a GFC breaker for $20.00 more than Home Depot but they make up for that 2 fold on the one nail sold a 1,000 times. If any of you live where there are Senior Action Centers, you may want to post a Canning Jars Wanted notice, I just got another case from a Senior citizen that no longer cans.

Wow, this reminds me of last spring when I was making cheese nearly every morning because my husband decided to milk 2 of our beef cows that lost their calves. Kind of like a science project, temperature, cultures,enzymes and timing are very important. (the New England Cheese Supply is awesome) I made my own press with a PVC pipe with holes and made wood disks to fit inside. My weighting were not accurate, but I guess it didn't matter since most of the cheese got eaten before it totally aged anyways. The harder the cheese (Romano or Parmesan) the more pressure._ Quite frankly there's not big money to be saved making your own but it is fun and I learned to appreciate the process. It takes 10 lbs of milk to make 1 lb of cheese and I can buy basic cheddar around here for $4.00 a lb. (homemade yogurt is definitely money saving though 1 gallon milk =1 gallon yogurt) I like the fast mozzarella recipe using citric acid when ever I was in a hurry but I did experiment with some of the other hard cheeses although most did not make it through the aging process because of sampling.

I made FARMER CHEESE (a soft cheese) last weekend so that I could make some cheese blintzes. They were wonderful! I hadn't had them in over 30 years, since I moved to N.C. I just can find whole milk Farmer cheese here. Sometimes you can find skim, but it's too hard of a cheese to make blintzes. It was very easy! I will attach the site on ALLRECIPES where I got it. When I lived in S.Florida, a wonderful lady in the neighborhood taught me how to make them and I still have the original recipe I wrote down. I had to make them from memory, as I have the recipe but need to find it. I made ricotta the next day with the whey. Surprised myself! I have never made cheese before in my life! I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was!! Well, almost... I tried to make mozarella yesterday, but it never did make a 'break'. I will try again some other time. Around here there still are a few women like that, a religious order I won't mention. They wake up very early in the morning to start their chores, make a hot breakfast for workers, clean up, even go out to work in the field, make lunch and dinner, some even while pregnant. They keep a spotless house, make all their clothes. I worked with a young girl who at 17 was working on her second quilt, little quilted puffs. She told me once "whenever you see me sitting, I'll be working on this as it's going to take me a long time to finish this quilt." She was amazing. They don't watch TV or spend time on what's not productive and raise their kids with these values, or at least try. Even the ones who don't live on farms grow their own food and preserve, preserve, preserve. This young girl married, and even when pregnant could work circles around her husband raking up almonds. They are diminishing in numbers, however.

Look at some of the grocery stores that have a wide selection of items. Many discount stores have less variety to choose from. The other stores may charge more but they have what you need. My local store in our small town has Junket, the cheaper stores in the next town over do not.

Wowie zowie. $25. I could sell the rest of my box of rennet and fill the car with gas. LOL... I can't imagine it costing that much. I know it's been a long time since I've had to buy any since it goes so far, but stilllll....

I make creole cream cheese with my rennet. For some reason we can't seem to find creole cream cheese here in NJ. Smiles. Creole cream cheese is sort of like cottage cheese, but softer and people generally eat it with sugar. For a gallon of milk it only takes a half a tab and I sometimes make only a half gallon at a time, so the package has lasted me a long time. I do love, love regular rennet custard, but haven't made that in a while. Think I'll make some with some milk that needs to be used up soon. Thanks for the reminder of those little silver packed gems. Maybe they're packed in real silver. $25. Shaking head. Good luck with your cheese.

Cream, I knew something had to be wrong about that price you found on Amazon, because I remember Junket as being quite cheap. It was always cheaper to make that than the boxed puddings. Anyway, I checked it out and that price you saw was for 12 boxes of the 8 blister packs. They sell the individual boxes for $2.27 on Amazon.

I also found the website where you can buy them directly from the manufacturer and they are only $1.50 a box. Hope this helps. The Junket website is pretty cool. I had forgotten about their ice cream mixes.
