I just made some flan custard from the Jello box mix ... was so simple & tasted quite a bit like the more laborious from 'scratch' Mexican flan made here in New Mexico. It reminded me of a custard the Swedish or Norwegians used to make back in NE Iowa called óosta kaka (spelling may be off!). Has anyone else heard of it or tried it? A good recipe? I think it was made from warm fresh milk (raw), rennet tablet, etc. & baked in the oven. I often wonder how those women in those early days found the time to do all this labor intensive cooking in addition to all their other chores in the house & outside on the farm, yet had no modern conveniences that we have today!
