A wonderful lagniappe from Louisianna!

Yesterday I received the most wonderful surprise from Karen (Riverrat) and her DH Charles !

Last year we had the pleasure of spending a few wonderful days with Karen and Charles. Their hospitality and warmth was beyond describing.

One evening we went to a wonderful restaurant, the Snake River Grill, at the L'Auberge du Lac Casino and Resort in Lake Charles. The meal was delicious but I was especially taken with the Bacon Wrapped Dates.... to die for!

Karen will tell you that I tried every trick in the book to get the waiter to talk the chef out of the recipe. It was great fun and Jason, our waiter, was an excellent sport. However it was to no avail. I even wrote the restaurant, praised our wonderful waiter and the meal...and asked for the recipe. I now get regular promotional emails from the Snake River Grill but still no recipe! I've tried several recipes I have found on line but none have come close.

Well Karen sent me a cookbook published by the L'Auberge and the recipe is in there! I can't believe she found it. Not only is this recipe in there but many other absolutely fabulous sounding dishes the L'Auberge is know for.

I can't wait to make them, maybe tomorrow. I'll be sure to post pics.

Thank you Karen and Charles, the book is wonderful and I will cook my way through it always remembering you and the wonderful visit we had.

That's my sis! It amazes me how Karen just says "pretty please y'all" or snaps her fingers and things happen.

I have planted LA seeds from bee pods in pots if the parent was particularly nice. It is a good idea to cut off the bee pods because they can sprout in your buds and overrun or choke out named, desired varieties. I have one pseudacorus that bears no pods, but these are not Louisiana irises though both may be called water irises. Most other pseudacorus are highly fertile and each bloom bears a bee pod, so on the pseudacorus you don't want the seeds falling and sprouting. A class of newer irises called pseudata (pseudacorus x ensata) bear no pods and come in a variety of colors. These mainly have been hybridized in Japan and Canada and may be hard to find. They seem to bloom with the early Japanese irises and fill a needed gap in bloom, at least in my climate, between Louisiana bloom and before Japanese bloom. I also need to look for one of those drawer hooks, they look like a perfect place for oven mitts. We retrimmed the windows in the house we are moving out of and I lost my mitt hook. Not going to replace it as I will only be there for a few more weeks tops. Alison, wasn't it your original package to Granjan that got temporarily lost last swap? Seems like it is always the best boxes that get lost or messed up. Although that category or distinction fits all the boxes. Great box May. -Robin

Here's a floorplan of the first floor. Blowing out the kitchen/dining room wall. I feel myself strongly resisting that, and I'm trying to figure out why. I love that it's a 1935 home with defined spaces, intimate scale (smidge under 8-foot ceilings), and great details. I'm concerned that a giant room would not fit the rest of the house. Also, when you enter from the front door, you could then see almost the entirety of the kitchen from the foyer. Not my fave. I'm okay with seeing a sliver of kitchen through the new cased opening. I guess if I blew down the wall, I could have a great island though. Peninsula: note taken for knee room. Could four of us stand at the peninsula for baking? Two one on side, one at the foot, one on the other side? I know the peninsula narrows an already narrow room. If I lost the peninsula, wouldn't I lose counter space and the base cabs? We really need counter space. Is there a better solution? We'd thought of a window seat along the window wall with a narrow refectory table, but I don't know. My kiddos are wiggly, and already no one wants to sit at the breakfast table by the windows. I'm not quite as concerned about the actual moving of the window than I am of moving any wiring/plumbing that we find back there. I don't think anyone could give me an accurate estimate without tearing out the range wall. We could bump out that window, but would it then look odd on the facade? Also, is it okay to have different window heights in the kitchen? We cannot bump out the sink window. There are narrow stairs right outside the window leading to the main rear entry deck. The top door leads to a rear hallway which accesses the mudroom, powder room, entry hallway, basement door, and family room. Yes, family members probably will still use the existing kitchen door, but I'm hoping to cut down on the traffic. There is another radiator under the windows in the current breakfast area. I hadn't considered more heating in the kitchen. How does one incorporate toekick radiators into cabinetry? I'm from the south. It's fair to say that I don't appreciate how much heat I'll need in the winter. Thank you, and please keep 'em coming!

I had to look up Boudin balls on the above menu, that was new to me. The ingredients look great other than the chicken liver...I'm not a chicken liver fan ;0) I've received lagniappes when making purchases, only occasionally things I could actually use. One that comes to mind that was appreciated....A heavy cordura carry bag containing two hefty folding chairs. Years ago, and we do still use them when going someplace extra seating might be needed. Like community college soccer games ;0) I had to buy a SUV to get them - they came out of the blue from Ford a few weeks after my purchase, unannounced.

How cool is that? Karen is very sweet and thoughtful, indeed!

I hope they are the same as you remember, Sharon. I don't understand why they wouldn't share the recipe or at least try to sell you the book if the darn recipe is published!

Sharon, please start testing the recipes in your book right away. We'll be waiting for reviews and recipes you know.

I'm so glad you guys are happy with the recipe book.

We purchsed the recipe book for ourselves also. The book only went on sale the first week in November and the first people I thought of was Sharon and Clive! We had such a nice visit! It was so much fun watching Sharon try to praise and work her way into trying to get that recipe from our waiter. He wasn't budging...must of known the recipe would be out sooner or later.

Too cool! I hope there are some tips for you know what....twist, pull, and........you know what I'm talkin' about.....LOL! Really, this is so great as I remember you talking about those bacon wrapped dates.

What a wonderful surprise for you! I'll be watching for the photos and recipe, as I would love to improve on my bacon-wrapped dates recipe!

Here's the recipe I use:
1 lb bacon
1 pkg pitted dates
1 pkg sweet & spicy pecans (from Trader Joe)--I know of some folks who use smokehouse almonds instead of the pecans

Preheat the oven to 400Âº
Slice dates in half but not all the way though, you just want to open them up.
Place pecan inside date.
Close the halves of the dates, and wrap a "one third of a slice" of bacon around the outside.

Arrange on a rack in a baking dish or on a baking sheet with sides to catch any grease.

Bake for 10 mins and check them.
Bake for another 5 mins and check them again.

You donÂt want to burn them at this temp, so itÂs important to check them.

Flip them over and bake for another 5 or 10 minutes so the underside gets baked too.

You can put these together ahead of time and refrigerate over night, then bake the next day.

Once baked, they are easily reheated in a microwave & they also tasty at room tempÂbut warmed is especially yummy!

I make mine similar to sooz, but I use gorgonzola instead of the almond. That blue cheese, bacon, sweet combo is awesome!

Karen is a wonderful, generous, loving friend to have. Very sweet of her to send that to you Sharon. (But it only makes sense to send it to such a sweet and wonderful person as you, Sharon) Have fun with your new cookbook!
