Back when i was a kid in the framing days, a drop of rain would hit the slab. We immediately picked up and headed north to go fishin'. Of course up north it was down pouring and probably only drizzlin' at the job site. Hey, why work in a drizzle when you can fish in a downpour!

sierraest: Exactly! It's a privilege that goes with the trades. My new insurance agent has it, too. In a big-city suburb. He forewarned me that at his age he has earned the privilege of only being in his office in the morning. But available by phone on the golf course, his garden, or elsewhere most of the time.

Personally, I think we'd all be better off with a big "Gone Fishin'" sign. And NO local competition, so our customers would just have to grouse and live with our nonwork ethic.

On time I was working "Set Up" for a mason in Corpus Christi, TX. We were working on the exterior walls of a strip mall and by this time the walls were up about 9ft. I was on the top of the bricklayers scaffold using a water hose to wet down the mortar boards before setting mud out for the bricklayers.

Although I didn't know it at the time, the GC, the super and teh architect were walking around just inside the walls looking things over. A slight amount of the water I was spraying on the mortar boards went over the wall and rained down lightly on the bosses.

The next thing i know the bosses came out and hollered up to me and my helper telling us not to set out any mortar, to clean the mixer and roll up for the day, cause it is raining....LOL

Everybody quickly took off and headed for the house. You can imagine the discussion we had the next day after the bosses figured out what really happened.

Gosh, I wish our house was being heated to 55Ë Â it's at least 80Ë in there! Much warmer than we will EVER heat it. Apparently the temporary 'thermostat' is either on or off, no gradations. Plus, there's a several inch gap under the garage doors, the door between the house & the garage isn't installed, so all that pricey heat is just flowin' out. All of which makes it extra annoying when nobody shows up to work in our warm house!

I am most definitely in the wrong line of work.

On 'snow' days these are the kinds of calls we get

"What time will the doc be here today ( I am a vet)"
"Don't know, things are slowed down a bit due to the weather"
"Well anytime is fine for us, we are snowed in and can't go anywhere".

HELLO???? I am not in a different climate! LOL

Happykate- our temp thermostat appears to working well. I may have to go over there and check though.. it was in the teens last night so pretty cold.

ponydoc: your work schedule goes with being a vet. Had you chosen to treat humans, you could--have your office staff--say, he can see you 8 weeks from now at 10:20 am. Or, if you want to see the PA or nurse practitioner, you can come in a week from tomorrow, but only if it's an emergency.

Yep; talk about someone marrying their work! One big advantage (at least for now): very little dealing with third party payment!

I agree with the heat point. We have our heat on the 1st floor of a cavernous 3 story home.... and only HVAC people working UNDER THE HOUSE today. No workers to be seen anywhere inside IN THE WARMTH.

Yep. The heat finally gets going good and they all disappear. Maybe they prefer to work in the cold? :o)

I wouldn't trade them for the world. I can't imagine dealing with some of the gross things I see on animals on people. I would vomit.

And you are so right about the third party payer. Even those with insurance pay us and get reimbursed.

House update: no one all day. Not much anyone can do but the drywallers. I know they had something to finish so maybe they did that today. I know they came last Saturday to so maybe someone will be here tomorrow.

Soooo we went and looked at furniture. That was fun- kind of......( we also ate Japanese and went to TOYS R US- that part was NOT fun!)
