I found Tomato Paste in a tube at

The World Market for less than half the price as VonÂs. At VonÂs it's $6.99 and World Market $2.89 for the same Amore tube. I donÂt use tomato paste often but this will be much better than tossing half a can or putting it in the freezer and forgetting about it.

I love tomato paste in a tube!

I can't believe that huge difference in price for the same item! What a rip off! I get that same brand at my local coop for about the same price as World Market.

I tried a tube for the first time, a few months ago. I used it once or twice, then tossed it into the cheese drawer of my fridge. But the packaging didn't say anything about storage, and now I'm worried about using it again, after 6 months or more. How long should it keep (after being opened and refrigerated)?

Thank you all. I have done some occasional stalking over on the Harvest forum, and you bet those folks know their stuff. Maybe I worded my search wrong, but couldn't seem to find the info I was looking for. (maybe because most people have enough sense to figure it out for themselves...) Thank you, Dave, for your words about Victorio. I bought it last year for dealing with blueberries, but it was an incredible help with my tomato harvest this year. It absolutely does leave the pulp. Last year (when I grew sauce tomatoes), I had lots and lots of sauce after I ran it through a wire strainer. I just didn't have enough sense to know what to do with it. This year, I did strain the first couple batches of tomatoes I ran through it, and the small amount of pulp that was in those beefsteaks made lovely sauce. Just not enough of it. What I especially liked was how quickly the pulp cooked down into sauce once it was strained out. After using this amazing gadget this year, I don't think there's much of anything that anyone could say to make me fall out of love with it. It's a huge labor and time saver! As a note, I discovered by accident, that if I filled the hopper with tomato pieces before I cranked them through and then emptied the bowl right into a hot pan, I had minimal separation of pulp and water in the jars. Re: Determinate Sauce tomato. I grow my vegetables organically, and honestly don't even like to spray organic concoctions. Add to that the fact that the entire county here seems to have Early Blight in the soil, plus the fact that our incredibly hot mid summer heat puts a stop to tomato production anyway, and I have decided that it really doesn't matter whether I grow determinates or indeterminates. I am still only going to get the first crop. I will try Opalka as an experiment. Sounds intriguing. But I am very grateful for the extra mention of Italia. All three recs are on my list to try.

Carolyn, my Opalka seeds were sourced from Sandhill. I will admit, my first year growing Opalka BER became a problem for several varieties(but not all) of tomato that year. Lots of rain followed by drought, and then I think probably over watered to compensate. Last year I gave Opalka another shot. And while I didn't get any BER problems, the production, fruit size, and plant vigor just wasn't all that spectacular. As I said before, the taste, while not bad, was only a slight improvement over Roma(which I consider to be far more vigorous and productive). I know most here won't share my opinion, but I've found leaf problems are far less pronounced when growing hybrid tomatoes and varieties bred for resistance. I understand that all tomato varies are susceptible to one thing or another regardless of being OP or Hybrid, dictated by the grower, but more accurately, by the environment and soil- which is sometimes difficult if not impossible to control. Mulio, I am far from being an expert, but this "grower" has successfully grown and harvested many varieties of tomatoes over the last decade. I've made a few mistakes along the way, but it ain't my first rodeo. I mean, really, how hard is it to grow a tomato? Opalka just didn't pan out the way I hoped it would. Just because the majority likes it(and Carolyn recommends it) doesn't mean I have to. I know it's not a popular opinion and I'm ok with that. This year is a mostly hybrid centric crop, and the plants just look so much happier and healthier than before, and producing like mad. Pure luck? science? grower? There are a few heirlooms that I would probably grow again, but 1 or 2 varieties out of the few dozen I've tried is hardly worth it.

Page 226 in my book is Tangella with the other two named, but no way was I going to put Tigerella in the book. LOL BTW, Tigerella quickly got dubbed Mr. Stripey, which has caused all sorts of problems since when Wayne Hilton, who used to own Totally Tomatoes, Shumways, etc., and sold them to Jung's, sent seeds of a typical gold/red bicolor to Sedds by Design in CA, and them not knowing that there already was a Mr. Stripey, named that bicolor Mr. Stripey. LOL Two very different varieties in all ways and I've spent many hours helping folks distinguish between the two inlcuding two well known seed sites where they pictured the bicolored Mr. Stripey, but called it Tigerella, which is a small red with jagged gold stripes, and not a bicolor. Keep asking your grocer for it. I asked for it and now they carry it in rural Iowa! Love using it. It adds an extra tomato punch to things, and you don't waste. I used to freeze my leftover paste from the can - I put 1 table spoon tabs on parchement pan and froze, then tossed in a zippy bag, but this is so much easier. I use it in Spanish Rice - just need a tablespoon or two.

Whoa, six months? I used an entire tube yesterday.

I agree, $6.99 is twice what I pay. I know Amore sundried tomato paste is more expensive, maybe that's what you priced at Von's??

On the tube of Amore it says it lasts indefinitely after opening if refrigerated. It also has a best if used by date of 3-31-12 but I think thatÂs because the law requires a date weather it needs one or not.

If you don't want to pay the extra price for the tubed product, here's a suggestion for "no-waste" canned tomato paste.

When you use only part of a can, scoop out the remainder into one tablespoon blobs and freeze on a tray until solid. Then put the blobs into a freezer bag and when a recipe requires a Tbs. or two of tomato paste, just take out as many as you need.

Woah! I have a tube of Alpino from Italy, got it at Whole Foods for $1.99 !!! No best by date but I typically keep it at least 6 months as I don;t use it that often.

Nope it was the regular tomato paste I havenÂt found the sundried yet. At $6.99 a tube I thought that was a little pricy for 4 Â½ ounces but our VonÂs is priced higher than the rest of Ca. because they say we are in a resort area. ItÂs about 10 to 20% higher than down the canyon to Bakersfield unless itÂs a sale item.

I did that freezing the tomato paste trick, then lost them in the freezer, lol. Actually, I was looking for my bag of frozen tomato paste last night, and couldn't find it. I don't remember if I used it up, or if it's buried so deep I just couldn't find it. I do need to clean out my freezer!

I've never paid over $4.99 for it, and that was at the "expensive" market (before I convinced the locally-owned market to carry it.) In the tube is the only way I every buy tomato paste or anchovy.

I'm not a big fan of tomato paste, so I find that a tube is perfect for me. I keep one in the fridge and use it to add a tablespoon to sauces and gravies. Lasts me about 6 months.

Cathy, if I needed a whole tube I think that is when I would go with a small can. Considerably less expensive.

Ann, true and my pantry was never without canned paste but I like the taste of Amore and haven't been buying the canned often. I use to keep the canned in frozen cubes before going to the tube.

Another option for tomato paste in a tube is tomato powder, which keeps indefinitely in the refrigerator and is less expensive over-all.

I use tomato powder for tomato paste (3 parts water with 1 part powder), tomato sauce (4:1 ratio water to powder), pizza sauce (3 t. powder plus water to make enough sauce for a 12-inch pizza - plus any other spices, vinegar, sweetener you like), spaghetti sauce, the base for homemade bbq sauce, etc.
