After having a brand I did not care for (don't remember which one), a friend suggested Panasonic. Mine are about 3 years old and we still like them.

Our Panasonics served us well.

When the batteries all died, we found that getting a new system was cheaper than buying all new batteries.

So we got Vtechs, which are great too!

Panasonic, though the newer AT&T set I got from Amazon.com was/is really great: you can run something like a dozen handsets off a single base, and the sound quality is great.

Only downside: can't figure out what box the movers put the base in...

If we're talking cordless sets, go with Panasonic.

If you're talking about installing a system with extensions, stick with Nortel or Avaya.

I have vtechs, which are supposed to be crap, but I'd had them for 6 years without issue.

Vtech DS6121-(2-5) is a consumer reports best buy. Only had ours for a week, but seems great,

I bought a 3 phone Panasonic answering set for well over $100. and hate them. HATE THEM....
They lasted all of about 6 months. Now even if they've charged all night they just shut off without warning sometimes within minutes of answering the call. Rather annoying when you've spent an hour on some company's Middle Eastern out-source tech support for an hour only to have it suddenly die. I bought new batteries thinking that would solve the problem but NOT. So until I can get down to buy another brand I make all important calls on my cell.

We also have the Vtech too, They work great, we're very happy with them.

I have Vtech for my land line. Mainly because it was available at Costco. Not too bad. Comes with a base unit and 4 handsets.

If you are bit of a techy, I also have a Linksys CIT-400 skype phone, cost was $US 140 but no longer available. Similar phones can be bought from Netgear and Belkin. For $US 2.95 per month, you get free unlimited calling in the USA. For $US 9.95 a month you get unlimited worldwide.

I have been using the SKYPE service now for about a year and in general it has been good. USA and international sound quality to UK is not quite as good as say Verizon, but definately acceptable. Quality to Hong Kong is terrible.

I also keep my land line for ADT alarm services and emergencies. We also take incoming calls on the land line.

I have been pleased with Uniden cordless phones.

Be sure to have at least some corded phones, for emergencies if nothing else.

I've got a wireless motorola with 8 remotes. Works great.
Yes, the kitchen wall phone (which is the base for the wireless ones) and two others are hardwired.

We've had a Panasonic base with extra hand sets for 4 yrs and still going strong! Also had a Vtech with 2 hand sets that worked equally well until I washed one with the sheets. I will buy either again, but the Panasonic does hold it's charge longer. Even when left in the car 2 days, it still had a strong locator beep.
