Have you ever been.......

hypnotized? What were the circumstances and what was the outcome? My aunt successfully stopped smoking after several sessions. I don't smoke, but I've got a few bad habits I'd like to get rid of and I'm curious if anyone has tried it!

I'm immune. Someone tried to hypnotize me years ago, in a group setting. I watched others go under but I was still wide awake.

My husband has been hypnotized a few times. The last was to quit smoking. It worked for a few years, but then he started again. Wasn't until he took Chantix that he finally gave it up ... hopefully for good.

Some years ago, many people had jobs building locomotives in a nearby city for General Motors ... but when GM was near bankruptcy, they sold off assets, including the factory building the locomotives. Another company bought the factory and, for whatever reason, things didn't go so well, or maybe they'd planned that. Another corporation in the large equipment field bought the factory a while ago. Many of the workers have been making something over $30.00 per hour. The new owner said that they'd pay about $16.00 - take it or leave it, and when the contract expired, locked the workers out. Within about a month, one of the workers, interviewed on the radio, told of being embarrassed to have needed to go to the food bank. If I've been making $30.00+ per hour ... no way am I going to be so strapped that I have to visit a food bank within a month of the paycheque stopping! Don't live paycheque to paycheque, folks! Plus ... if you carry substantial consumer-related (as contrasted to investment-related) debt, e.g. credit card balances carried for a number of months ... ... that's what I call being in leg irons, in addition to the handcuffs!! ole joyful P.S. Part of the story is that, about three or four years ago, U.S. folks coming to visit Canada could get a Canadian buck for about 70 cents ... ... and lately they've had to pay from US 96 cents to US$1.05. I suggested to some folks here, back then, that it might be a good idea to move some money offshore, possibly to Canada. o j

Yes, I was to a taping of David Letterman in NYC a few years ago. Before we were allowed to go in the studio and sit down, we were held in a foyer. The assistants (all young interns) told us we had to laugh at every joke, clap and cheer. They had us practice cheering. They said we had to laugh loudly and cheer wildly for the warm up comic so that David Letterman would know we were a good audience. If he felt (as he was listening backstage) that we weren't a good audience, then he wouldn't use his best jokes on us. It was all a bit crazy. We were told not to chew gum, to take off hats ,and under no circumstances were we to turn on our cellphones or take a picture. They told us if they saw a camera or cellphone they would escort us out of the studio. Then we went in for the taping. There were no empty seats, every seat had to be filled. I saw one intern walk through a row to get a guy to spit out gum into a bucket. Another intern sat in an empty seat, being sure to take off her jacket beforehand (the jacket had the David Letterman show logo on it). The show was going great, we were behaving and clapping and cheering and laughing. Then David Letterman dropped a bomb - it was the show where he admitted that he was being blackmailed. Of course we the audience had been told to laugh and cheer, so that's what we did. Afterwards, watching the entertainment shows about it, some reporters said that the audience seemed confused by Letterman's news. LOL, we weren't confused, we were just doing what we had been instructed to do! Funny thing, after the show was taped (and it's taped in the afternoon and aired at night), my partner Joe got on Twitter and said we had been at a taping of Letterman. A person who ran a podcast in California emailed him and wanted to know if he would go on the podcast and talk about the show. Joe declined because we were on vacation and he didn't want to waste his time.

Oakley, sorry you're going thru this. As bad as it is, it could have been a lot worse :( Yes, I've been given the wrong medication but even worse, the wrong medication was given to my daughter when she was just a child. But, being the proactive type, I always check meds before taking them. Before the Internet and Google, I used a PDR to reference drugs. It was the same pharmacist both times. I tore into him when he gave my daughter the wrong medication and complained to the store management. This guy seemed to be on too many drugs himself! Found out later there were many complaints against him and soon after he was fired. Being in the hospital is so darn dangerous anymore (well has been for many many years). Superbugs, overworked staff, staff on drugs, under educated staff...you can't leave a loved one in the hospital by themselves. Someone needs to be their advocate. DH has been in the hospital exactly 2x. The first was for a crushed heel. The care (or lack of) and staff was so atrocious I spent most of my time in the administrator's office :o I later filed a complaint with the state board of health and after reviewing my complaints and finding them valid, they zeroed out his bill. The 2nd time was for a double bypass. EXCELLENT care this time around in a much better hospital (Louis and Peaches Heart Hospital in Tyler, TX). Everyone from the janitorial crew to the surgeon and his cutting edge bypass procedure and the sharp as a tack nurturing and caring nurses. You would have thought he was their only patient. I've been taking pro-biotics daily for a few years. There is no doubt in my mind they prevent all kinds of illnesses. A happy gut full of good bacteria is a good thing :) I have a friend that got C-diff in the hospital. Hers became so bad she needed the bowel transplant. My mother also contracted it in the hospital, I think during an oblation for A-fib. She didn't have the bowel transplant but it took her months to get over it.

I've received enthusiastic applause several times for speaking and applause in appreciation of my volunteering. DH took curtain calls for his part in his HS play, "Arsenic & Old Lace" and was encouraged to become an actor. (His mother had other ideas.) He was widely applauded while leading a (successful) two-year battle against over-development in our town. People wanted him to run for Village President. (He's an excellent -- and concise -- speaker.)

natal...my DIL used Chantix after having smoked from the age of 14-30. She didn't even have to finish the whole series. Has never wanted another cigarette and actually cringes when she smells them :) We are all so glad. it has been 3 so far . Good for your DH !!

It is SO interesting that you posted this. I have never considered it, but just this morning, as I was feeling really annoyed that the scale was up 1.5 lbs. (I am trying to lose weight, not gain it), I wondered to myself if I should try something really different, like maybe hypnotism. I don't happen to know any hypnotists, so I don't know if I'll actually ever do it, but I'm now very curious to see what others' experiences have been.

Used it for childbirth 32 years ago. It was great! Doctors and midwives at the practice were fantastic. Can honestly say I had a pain-free experience.

Cyn427, you rock! How did you have to prepare -- did you take classes or something? You reminded me of a story my dentist told me. He had a university professor (or 2) who would use self-hypnosis before dental fillings or whatever they'd normally use drugs for. The patient would need about 5 minutes to get ready and then they'd be good to go! Oh, my, didn't you ever worry that it might "wear off" or something during childbirth? You are so brave!

Sueb20- I was hoping more people would write about their experiences so that I could learn more about it. Anyone else with experience?

Folk, we did have classes. This was in Durham and we had a choice between Lamaze and hypnosis. I chose hypnosis which was, to a certain extent, simply self-relaxation. There were several group classes with one of the obs and then everyone would have one or two private sessions close to delivery time with the mid-wife. Our first session ended up with the mid-wife saying I was fine, but DH was a mess (now ex-DH) and she spent the rest of the session teaching him how to help himself rather than showing him how to help me when the time came. Hmmpphh. We had another session scheduled, but DS was born a week early.

My mid-wife said she did it for herself at the dentist and could have a root canal without pain killer! She also said she would ask the dentist to give her five minutes and when she raised her finger that would mean she was ready. Now, I don't think I could ever do that, but during labor with the mid-wife there to "talk me down" I had no problems. It was quick and easy (total of five hours from the time I realized I was in labor). The mid-wife pretty much oversaw the labor and the ob checked in frequently and then delivered. It wasn't like anything that would wear off. I was totally aware of what was going on, no drugs either. When a contraction would start, the mid-wife would be right there if I needed help with the relaxation techniques. It was way cool, I must say.

The technique involved taking yourself down in an elevator (that was how the doctor started the group session) and relaxing more and more with each successive floor down. We sat in chairs with eyes closed. At one point, I felt a little dizzy (always had low blood pressure and used to faint as a child and teen), and put my head down below my knees. Kept my eyes closed and the doctor never changed his tone (calm and soothing) as he said "...If you are touched on your shoulder, you will feel fine again." He touched my shoulder and wham! No more dizziness. I was so surprised. Anyway, I still use the technique when I am stressed or can't sleep. Works like a charm.

I don't know why more places don't use it. It really was amazing. This was at the Durham Women's Clinic in the late 1970s. Way ahead of their time, I think.
