Best money book for young adults

Does anyone have a suggestion for a money book with real life advice for those just graduating college?
I'm looking for an easy to read book with the basics about taxes, investing, retirement plans, buying vs renting, etc.

The Millionaire Next Door: easy, enjoyable reading and right-on the money .(couldn't resist!)
My DD loves Dave Ramsay . Says his seminars are really beneficial. He is great, but I'm not familiar with his books. He's very personable, so perhaps look for a DVD.

I like David Bach's books, such as Smart Women Finish Rich.

You also might look at Zac Bissonette's books, such as "How to Be Richer, Smarter, and Better Looking than Your Parents."

My parents give our kids shares of stock. Five shares or fewer, depending on the share price. When they were little, they got Disney because the certificates had the characters on them. Kids thought that was great- and they liked endorsing the dividend checks (maybe $2.50/year, but hey!) DS followed Disney in the paper. One year they got Sara Lee because their coffeecake is a weekend tradition for us. We got our first computer and the kids got computer stock. Etc. The year each turned 16 and began to drive, their birthday present was an oil stock. All gifts were relevant to an interest they had. This was the kicker and the reason that even at very young ages, they loved getting these 'paper presents'. DS handles his own trading now, DivaD1 sits on hers and DD2 is vaguely interested, but to summarize, with very little outlay, it has been a learning experience for the kids while building a small portfolio.

Thank you all so much for your ideas and kind words-- but you know how it goes. The blessings go both ways. The kids (all of them-- not just the older ones) are generous with their time and love to share themselves with me too. It's not the same as it was when they were young -- or as often-- but I cherish what each of them brings to my life. I love the idea to give them good knives. It make such a difference and I remember how giddy when I was (in my 30s) when I *finally* got a really good knife. My then bf and I fought over who would be the sous chef! LOL I also love the panini maker because it goes a long way on a low budget. You can throw in a little spinach, a little cheese, tomato, pesto, whatever and have a delicious meal. I like the breville which is definitely a splurge they'd not make for themselves. I am pretty set on getting a good cast iron dutch oven or stew pot for my nephew. He uses only cast iron pans and he's asked for a good soup/stew pan. It's also a way to make the budget go far-- my gosh, I lived on soup when I was in grad school. Sephora is also a great idea for the girls--SO great, in fact, that we've done that for birthdays or breakups or just because (pedicure, lunch and sephora!) :) I will check with them to give them the option for money or a present but in the meantime, I am developing a plan for a different kitchen/cooking package for each. I think they'll prefer presents and that way, I'll be prepared. Now onto the tweens!

Agree with the other posts. Why the he// do you stay with someone who, according to you, is wonderful, loving and generous with everyone else including his (not related to him) friends and employees, and treats you and your child like carp? And who expects you to pay for pretty well everything as well as doing all the housework? You're not only a skivvy, but a skivvy who supports this ingrate and enables him to be Mr Generosity to everyone else. I'd be moving back to my place and cutting all ties with this creep. You say you want your children to have a father, but this guy surely cannot possibly be the father you wanted for them, one who gives them the example that Mom is the household slave and who ignores them (forgetting to pick up one from day care???) in favour of others. You may not get child support but then it won't be an unfamiliar situation- you're not getting it now. This guy isn't a husband and father, he's a millstone. Time to slip your neck out of the hole, breathe free and have the chance to find someone who appreciates you, if that's what you want.

I did a new piece yesterday using crayons, I like how it turned out. Unfortunately my crayons are Crazart brand which are extremely cheap and it shows. I already had those which I had for a previous project. I might get a better quality crayon. I agree I am sure that the more expensive special pencils would be much easier to use. I will consider getting better tools if I think this hobby will last. So far I am enjoying it. I too wish we had a place we could discuss it more and show our work for comments and suggestions. I don't do FB but I have read that Angie Grace group and enjoy the pictures. Maybe we could ask for one as a sub forum for KT, like some have the conversation sub forums. We could have a sub forum KT Hobbies discussions,or something like that. That way it could include all varieties of our hobbies from art, photography, writing, animals, what ever your hobby is.

There is an old (1997), basic, beginners book called High Finance on a Low Budget. It is very basic, but a good starting point for someone young, I think.

I think that it depends on the type of student.

My DH works in the mortgage business, and sees people often who have not established any credit due to using the Dave Ramsey system. So while it is good at keeping one out of debt and able to pay their bills, it IMHO does not go far enough or offer enough concrete information about how the credit system works and how to build and keep a good credit score.

Millionaire next door is a great book, but more of a philosophy of financial behavior book than a technical book on how things work.

I suggest asking your banker or financial advisor what they recommend.

Alternatively, they "don't need no stinkin' book." Tell them this (advice I wish I had received):

1) Save 10% of all monies you make or receive.
2) Pay your bills on time and pay attention to credit. *
3) Pay attention to your taxes.

That's basically it. Save money automatically and every single time. Learn about credit -- absolutely critical today. Don't ignore the IRS.

*Honestly, the best resource I've found for learning about credit and getting it in shape is the forums on myfico.com

We bought all 3 kids (in their 20's) The Automatic Millionaire by David Bach. I read a review about it from one of the Washington Post's financial guru's, Michelle Singletary.
