I love my Slater Electronic Aquatronic scale. I've had mine for at least six years. There are newer versions.

I like that it measures in both ounces and grams. And fluid ounces.

So many recipes use metric now that I would be lost without this option.

I have the same one that Ann has, and I love it. I store it, and use it, in a large clear zip-lok bag, and it's like brand new. Only time it's been out of the bag has been to change batteries.

Features I look for are (as AnnT) measuring in both imperial and metric with the button for changing this from one to the other easily accessed while in use (some have it underneath so you'd have to turn it over to change), zero function so you can weigh one ingredient, zero it, add another ingredient and so on, and auto shut off (which can occasionally be annoying but a flat battery is more so :-) ).

I have the Oxo too, but in the smaller 5-lb. size. For my cooking, the 5-lb. size is enough and I therefore didn't want to spend more for the bigger 11-lb. size. The smaller size also saves me a little storage room in my kitchen. I love the pull-out feature in particular on the Oxo scale.

That OXO looks great! I got a small digital scale last year for Christmas and I have to say that almost everytime I use it I tell my husband how much I love my scale he got me! I think that I use it more than any other gadget. Mostly I use it for freezing left overs and freezing ground beef so I can freeze them in the size package I need for dishes. But I'm always using it at least a couple times a week.

Yep, the reviews on the OXO are all good and that pull out display is such a good idea.

Salter Scale

Do NOT get the Salter. It only weighs up to 7 lbs. It takes funky (expensive) batteries. It quit working within one month. I took it back to the store & got my money back.

I got the Escali scale for Christmas (picked it out & put it on my Christmas list). It weighs up to 11 lbs., takes plain old AA batteries and costs less. It's already lasted longer than the Salter one did.

I very soon ran up against the 7# limitation of the Salter so I'd advise you to really consider the capacity of the scale you get.

The Escali does everything that I want it to do--mainly portioning meat & scaling dough. And, it comes in a lot of fun colors if you don't mind spending extra. I never could make up my mind what color I wanted so that's the reason I put it on my Christmas list! Let someone else make that decision!!

The most important things for me was the capacity of the scale, the Tare feature & the type of batteries needed. I can always rustle up a couple of AA's & didn't want anything that req'd those little disc batteries.

As Colleen mentioned, this scale allows you to zero out after adding each ingredient.

I wouldn't hestitate to recommend a Salter.

I have the 11-pound Oxo and would recommend it without reservation. It was $50 at Bed, Bath & Beyond and I used a 20% off coupon - even better at $40.

Here's another vote for the 11-pound Oxo scale. The pull-out feature is helpful when you're weighing a large container. We like being able to switch back and forth between pounds (for breaking down large packages of ground beef) and grams (usually for weighing yarn). I have also weighed greeting cards to determine how must postage to put on the envelope. "Re-taring" -- if that is a word -- is easy with this scale. We think this easy to use, small to store, accurate scale is worth every penny.

Both the tare function and the metric capabilities are very worthwhile if you ever get in to bread baking. It's more accurate to measure flour by weight than by volume, and it makes it really easy to add subsequent ingredients. Especially if you get in to experimenting with different percentage levels of dough hydration, the math becomes very easy in metric, and the tare function makes it easy to be accurate.

Seeing so many people who love the OXO scale, I could not but stop myself from expressing my own good opinion about it. Many new scale models that showed up in the past few years but OXO is still seen as best kitchen scale because it is tough and utilitarian. In addition to the pull-out display and tare ability, it is very easy to clean and unlike many other scales, it does not auto-shut and erase your measurement every few minutes.

I've got the Escali. Like it for the same reasons that Cilantro mentioned. Also, it is very light and flat so we can store it in our pot holder drawer and pull it out to use at the drop of a hat. It is a button push to go between ounces, pounds&ounces and grams.

Definitely get one that can weigh up to 11 pounds/ 5 kg. When you tare (e.g. zero out the weight of a bowl and anything already in it), it is the total weight that has to be less than 11 pounds. It is pretty easy to get over 5 pounds measuring into a heavy bowl or pot, but 11 pounds means you can measure for something like a good sized loaf of bread without going over or put the flour canister on the scale with a 10 pound bag of flour in it, tare and measure what you've removed.

We have been using it for years with no issues.

There are times when I have to lower my head to see the numbers under the curve of a bigger bowl so I can see the advantage of the Oxo. One of the reviews on Amazon says the Oxo remembers where it was tared to when it shuts off which would be an advantage the way we use the scale - always taring when starting to use it, but might be a disadvantage if you don't do that and use it without noticing that it isn't zeroed out when empty.

Both use standard batteries. I somewhat prefer the 2 AA to 4 AAA as less fiddly to change but that's a very minor difference.

The Oxo is bulkier and more than twice as heavy so it would be hard to decide which one to get if we had to replace ours.

The main Escali advantage is the weight difference Oxo scale at 2.5 pound vs. 1 pound for the Escali.

The main advantage for the Oxo is the pull out feature.
