27-inch deep hoods and head banging - really a concern?

I'm pricing out 36" ranges with a grill and am getting quotes on 42"-wide hoods. Due to the potential for smoky cooking, plus my house's lousy ventilation patterns, I'm interested in a 27" deep hood to improve capture area even more. One appliance salesguy, who seems very knowledgeable, is warning me about the forehead-banging risk which that extra 3" of depth creates.

Anyone out there with a 27" deep hood who has had that problem? Can I just compensate by mounting the hood a little higher, without compromising on smoke/odor suckage? Or is 27" overkill, seeing that I'm going 3" in each direction beyond the cooking surface anyway? The grill will be centered between the four burners. And my husband and I are average height (5'8 and 5'11), so no LeBrons to worry about in this household.

Thanks in advance. I'm fairly educated about appliances thanks to this forum, but not so much about venting.
