What I've learned about Bluestar in 5 years

If pushed, they will support their product 100%. 5 years past purchase and following my 2nd very frightening arcing spark show in my kitchen, along with a very, very long list of other problems, they replaced my range. While it happened to take them 5 weeks to do so after agreeing to do it - during which time I had no oven - for this action I am truly grateful.

In 5 years, here's what's changed on the range - some things improved, some things the same, and some things actually worse:

1. The burners are still amazing, and are now improved with the individual burner ignition system. What was always best about the BS is now better.

2. Right out of the box the oven is a truly consistent performer. I've always had total faith in the calibration of BS and based on early tests and use, this hasn't changed. I do love that reliability.

3. The range looks a bit better than it used to. The kick plate is more tightly manufactured and squared off in a way that looks slicker. The island trim has also changed and looks better.

4. There are now 2 separate metal inserts that sit on the drip tray which, I think, eliminates the need for tinfoil. These inserts can now be removed and cleaned, and because they're each half the size of the total drip tray they'll fit into the sink.

5. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the door is even hotter than it used to be. And, generally speaking, the door feels flimsy, and is indeed, now completely hollow. The glass is loose and rattles and the trim on the outside of the glass does not fit snugly. The old doors (all 3 that I went through) felt more solid and well-built.

6. I can't believe I'm going to say this too, but the knobs now get very hot while the oven is in use. This never, ever happened with my old range. This sucks.

7. The convection fan on the new range sounds awful. Buzzing and rattling to the point that it rattles the lids on pots on the stove top. This is sad as I had to have the convection fan on the old range replaced for the very same reason. Sigh.

8. There still seems to be a problem with final quality control at the company. Right out of the box one of the trim circles around one of the burner knobs is totally loose and moves around. I am mystified by the release of products from a factory with such obvious flaws.

Anyway, ultimately a good news story with a dose of reality.

Great news and well deserved in view of your tribulations. Kudos to Bluestar as well.
The "modern" stressed skin, lightweight doors seem to be getting more common on ovens of all makers. Everyone should be aware and cautious because it is a very different animal and previous experience investigating the old style doors is no great help. Think big mousetrap.

Great rundown of old vs. new Bluestar. Thanks for that. Really a shame about the knobs. There is no excuse for that. What, would it kill them to put a little insulation in this expensive range?

These are some tips for making Als gritty mix. I hope people on the forum and others who googled there way here will find it helpful. Screening Â I would buy a large 18 gallon rope tub container which is only around $5-10. Then put an insect screening on top of it and use holding clips to secure the screen onto the tub. Make the screen concave down to the tub so the materials wonÂt fly out when screening. I believe all insect screening is 1/16 inch. Hardware cloth Â I bought mine at Orchard hardware supply for around $2 bucks a foot. I bought 2 foot each. They fit perfectly on top of the tub with the insect screen right below it (see photo). I use 1/4 inch to screen out the pine barks. Fine bark Â leave these laid outside in the sun so they will dry. Mix them around every few hours as the barks underneath will still be wet. Drying the barks will make it easier when removing the dust and powder when screening. Preparing to mix the soil - I would wash the granite really well, I can basically smell the salt coming out of it from the brand I was using (A1 granite grit #10). Mix your batch up first then wash it again really well before moving them into the pot container. Use insect screen to cover the holes inside the containers so the mix wonÂt fall out. Supplies Â Use google map to find stores locally and just call the stores to find your supplies. Use "feed stores" for granite grit. (Gran-I-Grit Â grower size, is the best). For turface, use this link, http://www.turface.com/distributors/state/. John Deere stores will carry Turface Allsport which is the same as MVP. "Allsport Pro" will be too fine for use in the gritty mix. Gypsum Â if you plan on using a lot, just buy a 50 lb bag, I got mine for 6 dollars. Fertilizer Â I am using a 9 month slow release fertilizer, brand = Dynamite. Some of these slow release fertilizer will also have the micronutrient you need so you wonÂt have to buy it separately. Remember to buy a few empty buckets to store your supplies.

Never, ever put your Phals outside comments i've made in the past apply to here, not necessarily NE USA. As far as getting flowers, if you read the first post plus the in depth FAQ on the subject it all begins to make sense . There are the two groups of Phals. those that need a cool down and those that need a warm up to flower. (though perhaps day length might apply to some species) Some that need a warm up (here) are Phal.violacea and Doritis pulcherrima Phal.equestris blooming seems to be triggered by a cooling down. Cheating. (Phal.equestris x Dor. pulcherrima) x Kingiella philippense bloomed late summer for years in my conditions. After reading various posts i though i would try to make it bloom in the spring so i moved it to my warmer growing conditions in Autumn. Worked like a charm. I agree with the comments about increased light but of course it all depends where you are. No Phal will survive summer or winter outside here, Too hot (sometimes) Too cold (sometimes) and low humidity when the wind blows from the interior of the Continent. Leaf Burn is a function of light plus high temperatures.

ingrid, When I first started reading GW, I couldn't understand how people could SP a healthy rose. But now I know. If it doesn't work for you, it doesn't. It's simple. I too maxed out on Austins, and probably will not add anymore. I think I have every possible color anyway:) Strange things do happen. When I first moved here 7 years ago (after never having gardened in my life!) I planted 6 white bearded irises. Well now I have about 100 from that 6 and they are in bloom now. I think I get more comments about them as I do my roses. And now the irises are intermingled with the roses (I do have to dig them up, separate them and redistributed a bit more this year) and it looks great. So a simple HD bag of irises does wonders. I probably should look at reblooming ones, but now I have an emotional attachment to these. And I can't say enough about alfalfa. Last year was the first time I used it and I do think it makes a huge difference. I have the biggest fattest buds this spring and am seeing many basals. I've also noticed that the root balls of many of my roses are thick with feeder roots where they were not before. So I'm sold. I'm really excited because I have 12 bands from Vintage (11 teas, one HP) and am planning a new rose bed on the other side of my yard. I too have fallen in love with teas and yes, the lack of pruning required is a plus! I just hope I get to stay in this house long enough to enjoy the fruits of all this labor!

In the past year I have learned to like miniatures. (Always tried to save those little giftable roses with no luck; they were unhealthy, spindly, miserable things.) Last year I got two REAL minis from the nursery: Gourmet Popcorn and Rainbow's End and have thoroughly enjoyed both bushes. GP looks just like popcorn and blooms well, and RE has a really cheerful bloom. Both are trouble-free and very cute too. If I like a bush but it's in a bad spot, move it!!! Yves Piaget has suffered in the shade for years (tree branches grew over it). This spring I moved it to a sunny spot. Poor thing was in terrible shape (some would have tossed it), and I hacked a lot of it, leaving 3 canes leaning one way and 3 leaves too. It's in full sun now and leafing out beautifully. Looking forward to that first happy, healthy bloom. Not that I've learned anything, but the drought and need to conserve water is on my mind every day (especially today and yesterday with 100-degree temps). The rose beds have been mulched heavily. Didn't learn much from the linked article, but it might be of interest to others. I'd feel terrible to let the bushes go unwatered until they wilted as mentioned in the article. If we don't get some rain this fall/winter, we may come to that. I must deadhead a couple bushes more aggressively all summer (New Day and Elle). They are so big by fall that they block my view when backing out of the driveway. Probably won't bloom as freely, but oh well. Have enjoyed everyone's input here. Sorry if I wrote too much!! Thank you for posting your experience. This further cements my decision to go with a Bluestar range top and (different brand) wall oven.

I already felt like the top was the best part of the thing, and worried that the oven would be too much like the one on my current viking range, which I hate.

Bummer to hear that BS quality is going down hill - it is made near my home town (not that I ever heard of it when I lived there)
I love that you can put a full sheet cake pan in the 30 inch oven - but will live with my new Wolf.

Well, I think you probably solidified my decision not to buy one of these. Aamerican Range is looking better in comparison to this. Thanks for taking the time to make the extensive post.

I have had my BS 36" RNB with grill installed for about two months. So far I love it. It is not perfect but I would buy it again in a heartbeat. The burners are awesome and gorgeous. The oven is huge and accurate. My baking has never been so good. The broiler is terrific. I made some beautiful ribeyes under it yesterday as a change of pace from the grill. The door does not get hot but the kick plate does and so do the knobs. The grill is good but not great. The back runs hotter than the front part so I have to move the food around a bit. I really wanted a grill because we don't have the ability to grill outdoors.

Since I recently ordered a 36" RNB, this is interesting to me to say the least. I'm happy to read your first four positive comments! Numbers five and six strike me as very odd, considering the hot door issue has been discussed on these and other forums, and one would think BS would make improvement in these areas! Rather, you say it is worse?? I'm really looking forward to cooking on my new ranger, but would rather not have to wear welding gloves to do so...

Originally, I think they wanted the door hinges more exposed to the outside kitchen air, as baking the hinges, on the old model (before the V-1) made the hinges stick.

I don't know why they don't go back and insulate the door more now and remove the side door vents... maybe they thought the insulation held moisture that was hard on the hinges. I think this could be remedied.
