Melaska and other GWers up in Alaska...everyone okay?

Just wanted to check on our friends in Alaska, with the big storms they're having up there. Is everyone okay? Hope no one is having problems with the flooding and extreme winds. Please check in, if you have a chance...so we know you're okay :)

Hi lavender and all - yes...we are buried in snow but we are surviving :) The harshest weather is northwest...we are much further south. Valdez gets the most snow in Alaska.

We usually get 3-4 'snow teasers' that melt the next day before it finally decides to stay for the winter. On October 30, we had our first teaser...OK, you'll be gone tomorrow. Woke up...we were buried...I was so shocked when I opened the front door. "BAM! Hello Valdez...I'm here to stay!" It's unusually early for us this year - I guess Alaska didn't get the global warming memo??? :)

We have great snow removal crews - in fact, we've never had school closed because of snow - only because of winds. Which can be hurricane force at times.

A common sight:

I remember the first time driving through the town part of Valdez in 1977 - I really couldn't 'see' the town as it was just a maze of snow tunnels. I remember one year's snow was so high, some people could walk right outside their 2nd story windows.

Here's a little trivia:

Average Annual Snowfall (in city): 325.6 inches
Average Snowfall in Thompson Pass: over 600 inches
Record Snowfall (in city): 556.7 inches (1989/90) (That's over 46 feet!)
Record Snowfall in Thompson Pass: over 900 inches (75 feet! A few miles out of town).

Melaska- Glad to see you're okay! The news has been reporting the bad storms up there, since your storms impact our weather, too...especially this time of the year, even though we're in eastern Washington.

We have snow, but not that kind of snow! I'm glad you're prepared, even if it did arrive a little early, this year. I guess no more construction until next spring, right? Have a great weekend and stay warm! :)

gglks - you and anyone else should feel free to share any pictures I've posted on GW. I'm happy to help and am surprised and a bit dismayed to see that doing a search for "smarge" only yields a few posts! I had posted thinking I was helping all future renovators looking for ideas since GW helped me so tremendously. If it is helpful I'll post a few more pictures of my kitchen. One day I'll set aside some time to get my kitchen in the finished kitchens area. Here is a long view of the exterior wall of my kitchen, showing the vaulted ceiling. Here is a pic of my other backsplash, located above a sink on in interior wall that needed something nice to look at. This wall is perpendicular to the stove wall with the tree of life mosaic. (its an old pic, taken before the UC lights were installed, which is why you see the wires.) Here is a closeup of my perimeter countertop, which is Caesarstone "Raven" in polished finish. I adore it and get compliments on how natural it looks for a quartz composite counter. These are old pics and I'll try to start my own thread showing the whole, finished kitchen one day when I have an extra hour. Feel free to ask any questions and good luck with all you out there in the planning stages!

I like the hood as drawn, except for one thing that may or may not bother you. I think it needs to be slightly taller. 6" taller than the rest of the cabinets doesn't give it the "presence" that it deserves, IMHO. Of course, sketches can sometimes be deceiving especially since it's not showing the larger darker mass that will have more presence, so until you have it in a software and can play with different perspectives in it, it's hard to judge a flat black and white elevation. (Sorry for the "weasel words" of "it depends.", but it does!)

If the drawer hardware is good you can likely get away with just one pull. Live with it awhile and see how hard the drawers are to open and close. If you find the drawers to hard to open and close after they are loaded up, you can try better drawer hardware if you have decided the appearance is acceptable with a single pull. Older houses often had no real drawer hardware, just wooden drawers on wooden rails. Large drawers often needed two pulls to even get them open.

OP returning to update. So push came to huge shove (framing started and kitchen along with it) and I had to just jump. So here is how it shook out (framed shaker style, white premiter, stained island): Custom: $17,000 (bummer!) Shiloh: $12,596 Koch: $13,188 Medallion Silverline: $11,478, Medallion Sliverline: plywood upgrade: $12,923 Home Crest: $9,333 - so low it kinda scared me? Showplace: $14,184 Based on KD which I have read and read how important that is plus you can 'hear' it in the KD's posts on here - it was down to Shiloh and Medallion. Medallion had a promotion which brought the price down a lot and the KD really quoted aggressively. I really also liked her style and she was very helpful/knowledgable. Medallion also has been around a very long time, good reviews - that also weighed heavily. The Shiloh KD also very helpful/knowledgable. I liked them from the start. They have free glaze although I'm not sure I'll use it. Still thinking on that one. A little unsettled at the recent bad review on GW regarding them. BUT, that was just 1 review and nothing is ever perfect. In the end - it came down to PAINT color and door style. I like the bevel in the Shiloh lancaster shaker and Medallion's was a straight 90 degrees. I could get over that though. The paint however - for Medallion the White Icing seemed so bright white while the Divinity felt too yellow. That was the clincher. Shiloh has 4 shades of white and I like a couple of them. I am debating between Polar and Soft White. Side note: I had so much time but felt like I waited until the last minute getting quotes, etc.. So worried about making the wrong decision or paying more than I needed or getting a better cabinet than I really needed.... I ended up not getting the last quote until Sunday (as in 2 days ago - KD super busy) and they started framing yesterday. So I showed up at the job site to see they had framed the kitchen windows (spaced incorrectly from the printe) and had to decide right then and there. Just like that - decision made. So thank you all for your help thus far with determining where costs are and how/where to cut them. This kitchen quoting business has been quite the process. Now I need to fine tune the design and choose a paint and stain and away we go. Gee that sounds simple doesn't it? ;)

No more construction - we planned it that way. Wanted to get a head start in the Spring. We'll probably have to hurry the snow away by getting a front end loader to help it melt faster.

The only thing giving me pause now is holding my breath praying for no power outages. We've already gone through 2. The 2nd one happened about an hour after hubby left for the beginning of his night shift (But, of course!).

We're going to put in a pretty big generator in the new build with easy-to-operate switches (for me) ;)
