$2500 for a seven/eight year old oven seems incredibly high. I realize these are Wolf but still, appliances don't last as long as they used to.

Yeah, but then I consider that people often put them in for status or resale but don't use them that much.

If so Pacific Sales in Torrance has the floor model of the current Gaggenau 30 double ovens(BX280) for $3186.

I would take that over those old ones.

Although they look to be in good shape in the photo.

I was very interested in the Gaggs you mentioned. In fact, when I saw your post last night, I was ready to run out there first thing this morning. Instead, I was in Santa Monica so took a look at the Gaggs at Snyder Diamond to make sure they are what I want.

I've been quite taken with your enthusiasm for those ovens and I do LOVE the side opening door. I never considered them because of the price, but that Pacific Sales floor model is a great deal.

Yet, though I do love the sleek modern look of the unit, I'm not sure it's right for our house. We are doing a whole house remodel of a 60's ranch. I would describe it as a modern urban farmhouse aesthetic.

I also took a look at the Wolf when I was at Snyder Diamond and, oh my, it's a fine looking machine. One of the things I really like is the bottom rack rolls out onto a track on the door when it's open. I bake a lot of things in cast iron pots and this looks so handy. Probably the used Wolf doesn't have this feature though.

In the end, I think I'm going to pass on the Gaggs because they don't fit in my newly built cabinet! The cost of rebuilding the cabinet will outweigh the savings on the floor model :-(

yes it does !

are you sure the wolf will fit in your cabinet? And, don't assume re-doing the oven cabinet will outweigh any savings. Years ago when we were doing 10 kitchens a month we had more than a few ordering errors on oven towers and I can't recall an invoice over $500 from an installer for modifying one, and there were more than a few. Even if yours cost that much to modify for the Gaggenau, it still make that a really good deal. Might push the whole project out of your budget so it's not a no brainer.

Also, keep in mind that dbl ovens are not a standard size especially in height so you are probably looking at modification anyway, unless you buy what was specified or replace what you had.

antss, thanks for that feedback. I had the cabinet built for a Bosch which as far as I can determine is just slightly taller and pretty much the same width as the Wolf, so I think a Wolf would work fine. Seems to be a moot point, though. I think I've lost out on the used one I was considering.

So back to the Gagg. It is quite a bit taller than my box. Would have to redo the box which is oak veneer. My cabinet maker would have to get a new sheet of veneer. Not cheap, but maybe worth it.

don't see why more veneer would be needed if the oven is larger, seems to me that'd require removing veneer.

really boils down to what's there and how it was constructed. If the bosch was to fit right up to doors and drawers then sure - it'd require new fronts.

Hmmm.... but I don't have any box to build around. I don't actually know anything about these sorts of ovens. I'm just starting on this quest but ... are they still even there I wonder? Do you know? It's Friday night....

Hi! I am in LA ... but I'm not quite up to buying; frankly I have never even heard of Gaggeneau -- and I can hear you all gagging from here. I am needing new appliances, but I am very, very afraid to start investigating the cost of things. I suspect all of this is over-the-top expensive. And I don't know enough yet to evaluate cost:benefit for me. So while it sounds like it must have been a good deal, I'm still scuffing my feet.

So to me $3200 is not over the top expensive.
But that is relative.

Comment about cabinets for wall ovens. We've had the same kitchen cabinets since 1987. We paid for quality custom cabinetry at the time and it's still in near perfect condition. We luckily chose a dark cherry which blends well with our home and hasn't been a victim of fashion.

In those 25 years we've had 3 different double wall ovens. Each of the 2 replacements were just slightly larger and needed the cabinets cut down to accommodate them. The frames of the ovens hid the unstained wood. We saved many of the wood scraps from the original install and were able to use them when we replaced the microwave and needed to add wood to the cabinet. If you can and you're remodeling save some of those discards - they might come in handy.

bee - what I'm saying is modification doesn't have to sink the boat.

Almost all ovens have a different size requirement for the cutout. This means you are very likely to need " modification" to your oven cabinet UNLESS you choose an oven with the EXACT same cutout size as:

1. the oven you currently have

2. the oven that was specified during ordering of your cabinets because that's what size the hole was cut for at the factory.

Since very few ovens have the same size cutout requirements, I saying am you are likely to need modification for YOUR oven cabinet anyway. OI am also saying that the cost for such may not outweigh savings you got on an oven in the secondary market. The gaggenau in this case.

That modification may be one that makes the opening bigger or it might be one in which you need your current opening made smaller like cate tells about.

Here's a cheat sheet:

1. Size of current oven opening
2. size of oven being purchased i.e. A,B,C,D, ect...
3. If not same - find installer/carpenter to make opening correct size and how much will it cost?
4. Cost of new oven (A,B,C,) + modification (if any) equals cost of decision.

A. = x dollars
B. = x dollars
C. = x dollars

you'll then have a handy matrix to easily tell you if the gaggenau is cheaper than the wolf or if another is still cheaper yet.

Again - you are probably going to have modification cost no mater what you choose!
