Anyone here make paper mache'?

I have an idea for some Christmas decorations made out of paper mache'. I'm planning on making them out of newspaper, flour, and water. What do I seal the ornaments with so the flour doesn't attract bugs?

actually, unless you have a REAL problem with silverfish or roaches who CAN eat dried wheat gluten- it's rarely a problem.

but the idea solution is to let them dry thoroughly (I'll 'dehydrate' mine in the oven set on 100 degrees for an hour after they're 'dry' to be sure) decorate them, and then hit them with two coats of matte spray finish (or gloss if you prefer)

no bug eats plastic :)

I've heard some people use wallpaper paste instead of using flour....would that make a difference as far as attracting critters?

The one I got last year which is like what you are describing (large ceramic)..was from Ebay. I too was looking for a large ceramic one, and just lucked out on an ebay search. As luvs said..there are several stores who probably will be putting them out now...Good Luck. jane

Wow...I forgot about this post...glad someone brought it back to the front! I want to do this for cards and scrapbooking too, so I amn glad to hear it'll hopd up on the pages. It looks like fun. I need a new hobby.....my tole painting is kind of on hold for awhile, I have no time for it anymore. Jenni that is so nice of you! I saw a demonstration on TV a few weeks ago and years ago at Joann's and it looks simple enough. Not a lot of supplies either! I'd love to get into it. Guess I'll get some stuff to start this week end. Sounds like a favorite around the KT!

Thanks Luthien! What a great idea. I took a papermaking class years ago, but you make it seem easier somehow. I think an old window screen could be used too, I have some of the ones that you insert into the window and slide open. Maybe I could take one apart. The trick would be getting the right size of transparency. I've also seen amazing things made with the pulp. Once you squeeze most of the water out of it, the pulp can be used to sculpt shapes. If anyone is interested in that aspect just google paper pulp sculpture or paper mache sculpture. kathy

Is that the same as one of thoser "self-healing" mats to use with a roatry cutter. I haven't done any real card mnaking but when I need a really crisp fold, scoring is essential. I will ise a NEW Xacto blade and just let gravity be the weight applied... just drag blade along a straight edge to barely scrt=atch the surface, as they say. Found an interesting site earlier today. I have used elmers glue and water, works great and when it dries it is clear.

We like to use wallpaper paste for our paper mache projects at preschool, but I think the paste we use ( from Wal-Mart) does have flour in it. We just seal things with clear spray and they have lasted well.

Personally, instead of spraying them, I'd probably use a decoupage medium. But I have asthma, so that's probably why it's a preference for me.

Some commercial wallpaper paste has bug repellant or killer in it as an additive. So if you use that instead of flour and water, you shouldn't have any problems with bugs.

Just look on the label... it will say if it has bug stuff in it.
