Just make a simple pomodoro sauce...sautee some garlic and onions in olive oil, add the tomatoes and perhaps a bit of basil, cook about 15 minutes and serve over pasta.

You didn't read that from me. I bought the Muir Glen Fire roasted and their regular tomatoes and didn't think that they were anything special.

Use the tomatoes with the chilis in salsa, chili or some other tex mex dish.

But I love the pizza sauce and the plain ol' tomato sauce.

But the "diced" tomatoes..aren't anything special.

I have to agree with Ann. I'm not understanding what all the hype is about.

I use the fire roasted ones in chili and tortilla soups. Yum. Now I'm one that would NOT use them in pomodoros.

I love the fire roasted ones but now the other manufacturers have come out wiht fire roasted also.

I got some fire roasted tomatoes last week but they were not Muir Glenn. I make rustic pasta e fagiole. Sauteed an onion in some olive oil, added the fire roasted tomatoes with garlic, and then added a 10 oz. package of frozen chopped kale. That's definately for kale lovers only! Could use spinach for something more refined or leave out or sub some other veggies like zuchinni, mushrooms or peppers. A slog of red wine and tsp. of italian seasoning. A can of cannelli beans, rinsed. Some canned spaghetti sauce to fill out the pan. Mix in box of rigatoni or penne, cooked. Put in a casserole dish with 1 cup shredded italian cheese mixed in. Top with thin layer of grated parmesean. Heat in 350 oven for 30 min or so, till well heated through. Yummy and healthy.

I use Muir Glen for Tuscan beans, baked pasta with prosciutto, gorgonzola and shitakes and for my Tuscan beef stew. I just like the fire roasted flavor better. Now that I think about it, I use that brand when I'm making something that cooks a long time.

I use them just like any other tomatoes. I'm not a fan of Muir Glen though. The ones I have bought had most of the peel in with them and at their price, the peel should certainly have been removed.

Sorry, have to agree with AnnT. Tried them and didn't think they were anything more special than other brands I have boughten.

Also, if memory serves me correctly, Cook's Illustrated did not rate them very high. Does anyone remember what issue that was?

I like them. Like Jessy, I tend to use them most in soups and chili or things that cook for a fiarly long time. The exception is pizza. I have used them drained on pizza.

We like their ketchup, too. No corn syrup or other cr-p in it.

I haven't seen Muir Glen ketchup, but I think that Whole Foods 365 Ketchup is better than Heinz! That's a pretty strong statement from one who grew up using it on everything, but when I began the search for a ketchup w/o corn syrup, I ended up liking the WF brand best!

I do not know issue number where CI rated Muir Glen but on the website (I have membership) it has a not recommended. I tried it also when it was 'all the rage' around here but I do not like canned tomato product where they leave the core in. You would think for the price they charge they could cut the core out of the tomato.

Thanks for the tip on Ketchup. I am a ketchup fanatic and HATE HFCS - totally hate the stuff. Can't even buy dark corn syrup anymore to make pecan pie because Karo now poisons their dark corn syrup with HFCS.

Ahhh for the days when CocaCola had SUGAR. When Kellog's Rasin Bran had SUGAR...... When KARO CORN SYRUP was just CORN SYRUP!! And they wonder why so many kids are fat and so many adults are becoming diabetic!!

We use Muir Glen brand frequently. prefer fresh tomatoes, but for canned tomatoes they are very good and like them a lot. We use them in soups, sauces, and my favorite stewed tomatoes over scrambled eggs. Didn't know they make ketchup with have to give that a try. NancyLouise

dancinglemons: I'm with you on the HFCS. If you live near a Jewish neighborhood, stock up on sodas at Passover. Corn is NOT allowed during this spring holiday so the soda companies make a run with plain sugar.

Also, when I open a can of Muir Glen FRT, I dump it in the food processor, pick out the peel, and puree whats left. I don't like canned tomatoes at all but this is my compromise for the chilis and soups. I don't buy diced tomatoes...somewhere I read that the calcium somethingorother hardens them. Shrug.

Seems like I remember Contadina was a preferred brand of tomatoes when rated. Since I saw that, I haven't been able to find them except in tomato sauce & paste.

My quest to find a ketchup and other products without HFCS was begun when our darling little grandson was diagnosed with a corn allergy. That stuff is ubiquitous--it's in everything! I totally agree about our overweight society. I had no idea corn syrup wasn't the same animal!

I don't mind them but they are pricey and I find others that are the same/similar quality for half the price.

I try to avoid corn syrup and HFCS too.

They only thing special about Muir Glen toms was the fly I found in can last year. I think he was organic too.

Lately, I have been looking at all the ingredients and find that the HFCS is in almost everything. Try to buy a loaf of good Wheat bread without it. It is almost impossible.

DL : Karo made a " Waffle and Pancake Syrup " which they discontinued .
I don't know why ??? it tasted like Maple Syrup and was thicker.
Had a great flavor and didn't make the Waffles and Pancakes soggy.
I don't think many people knew this. It wasn't advertised.

I don't even use the San Marzan tomatoes anymore.
I have about 8 large cans left. I don't like them as much.
So I mix them with my old stand by's, Contadina , Red Pack, etc.
I wait for them to go on sale; 50 cents a can, then I'll buy 3 cases.

I forgot to add that I used 5 diced fake smoked sausages in the pasta e fagiole. You could use regular italian type sausage, however much you like.

I also like the roasted tomatoes in chili. I don't buy Muir Glenn since other cheaper types are available.
