HAPPY FRIDAY!!

The alarm went off and I got a surprize...DH took the day off!!

So I'll have company as I do my errands today!

Its the last day of exams for my son, Monday begins a new semester. I pray he does well as his grades are not as good as I hoped...he basically hit a slump.

I'll take mom out shopping and later maybe hit to home show here in Philly, then maybe dinner at the Melting Pot...(any reviews??)

Tonight is still up in the air.

I have to work tomorrow but Sunday I am off!! I think we will probably go to Cape May to look for a new rental home for the summer and then maybe take a drive up to Atlantic City for dinner and some gaming.

Not sure if DD is coming home...it would be nice LOL!!

Quiet weekend here. Leaving for the cottage a bit latter. Just Clive and I this weekend which will be nice after two weekends in a row with company.

Think I will poof all weekend and see if I can clear out some of the freezer. I'm only taking milk and bread and some produce I have in the fridge here. I have no idea what's in the freezer there so it should be fun seeing what I come up with.

Finally a quiet weekend here. I am going to try to remember how to cook for just DH and I after two and a half weeks of cooking for 100-200 people every day. I have been cooking for those in shelters from our recent flooding.

I plan on just playing with the puppies all weekend.

We bought the plans online, and had a contractor friend of ours build it. Unfortunantly, the plans were not great, and there are some MAJOR changes I would now make to it before I built another one. Ebay now has a ton of cute small coops. It would be worth it to buy them premade (even with shipping). My mom bought a small wooden children's playhouse and converted it-- it is way cute, too! The coop is sitting on the concrete, though there is now about 12-16" of straw covering it. We had originally planned to put it on soil, but forgot that the neighbor on that side has a satanic dog that would terrorize our chickens! So it went on the other side of the house on the cement pad. This also prevents any predators from digging under the coop, so I guess its OK. We started off with only 2-3 chickens as well. But we started with bantams (minature chickens, about 1/4 the size) so they would do less destruction to our landscape and so my daughter could more easily hold them. We have been very happy with them, especially the Cochin breed, which are very calm and sweet. Over 22,000 members across the country and so much knowledge. I spent hours and hours on the site and learned so much before we even got the babies. What Tomatoes Grew Well For You in 2008?

Sammy, I don't have a greenhouse, although it is on my "wish list". Maybe one of these days. I start my seeds in 72-cell flats on Super Bowl Sunday and grow the seedlings under lights for about 4 to 5 weeks before I start moving them outside for part of each day to harden off. My light shelf is just one of those assemble-it-yourself plastic shelving units you buy at a place like Lowe's or Home Depot. I use ordinary shop light fixtures with plain old fluorescent lights. I leave the lights on for 12 hours a day, more or less. The light fixtures are on a chain and the chain is attached to hooks that DH screwed into the bottom of each shelf. Using the chains, I can raise and lower the height of the lights as needed. This is very important as you want your light source as close to the plants as possible without actually touching the plants. Keeping the lights very close to the plants keeps the young plants from stretching and getting leggy. When it is time to harden off the seedlings, I give them 1 hour of outside time the first day, 2 hours the second day, etc. I am careful to put them in a location that is completely sheltered from the wind because too much wind can cause windburn and windburn will kill the plants in the same way sunburn will. After a week of gradually lengthening exposure to outdoor conditions, the plants are hardened off and ready to go into the ground. Now comes the tricky part.... Just because the plants are ready to go into the ground does not mean the weather is going to cooperate with me and the calendar. So, sometimes I carry them outside every day for a couple of weeks before the weather is cooperative enough for me to plant them in the ground. And, if worse comes to worse and a major cold spell settles in for several consecutive days and the plants have to spend all those days inside, then they lost their "hardened off" status and I have to start all over with the hardening off process. Down here in extreme south-central OK, with an average last freeze date of March 27th, I like to get my plants in the ground between March 5th and March 27th, and the earlier the better. Is it risky? Yes. Sometimes we have sleet or snow after I have planted and, in that case, I cover up the plants and hope for the best. The same is true of cold nights--early planting means you must be diligent about covering up the plants on any night that it might possibly go below 40 degrees. Frost, after all, can form at 38 or 39 degrees if all the other conditions are just right. Planting early is the key to having plants in bloom and setting fruit before the temperatures get hot enough to impede fertilization. Because I am a tomato maniac, I also plant 4 to 8 plants in containers in the late Feb. to earliest March timeframe, and carry them into the very well-insulated barn every night, and back outside every morning. Using this method and using tomato plants purchased in Dallas in 6" pots the minute they arrive at Lowe's or Home Depot, I generally have my first ripe tomato between April 20th and May 1st. This is possible only because the plants I buy are about 10"-15" tall and in bloom when I buy them. I cannot even explain how important these first early tomatoes are and how much we enjoy them. I could raise the early plants myself, but to get them to the size they are when I purchase them, I'd have to start the seed around Nov. 1st and the holidays are too busy as it is. I think that tomato seedlings transplant best when they are 6 to 8 weeks old. Anything older than that and they suffer more transplant shock. And, even though I advocate early planting, there is no point in doing it if the soil is still very cold because they won't grow in cold soil. Instead, they'll just sit and sulk until the ground warms up. In Feb. and Mar. I check the Mesonet soil temperature data daily and then, when it is in the right range in my county, I go out with my thermometer and check the soil in my beds to see if it is warm enough. With early planting in the ground, if I am able to keep the plants from freezing to death or suffering freeze damage, even my in-the-ground plants will give me ripe tomatoes before Memorial Day, which is at least a month earlier than my gardening neighbors can even hope to have a ripe tomato. One of my "old farmer" neighbors tried for 7 or 8 years to "beat me" by having the first ripe tomato and finally decided it couldn't be done. LOL (I'm not competitive--I just want to have ripe tomatoes to eat as early as possible!) Some years, after we've eaten the first 3 or 4 earliest tomatoes, I'll give the next couple to my "old farmer" friend because I know he and his wife are as hungry for a garden-fresh tomato as we are, and they probably won't have ripe ones until mid- to late-June. If I am very, very careful with my spring plantings and am able to carry the tomatoes deep into fall, we eat ripe tomatoes at our house from April through late November or early December, and sometimes into January if I have late keepers. In the winter months, we have "oven dried" tomatoes to toss into salads or to use in cooking, and some years I can and make sauce. I'd rather have the tomatoes fresh, but canned, dried or frozen ones are still better than the garbage that grocery stores call "tomatoes". Right now, in fact, I have a big pot of tortilla soup on the stove and I can't wait to eat it. When I harvest onions in June, I chop up a ton of them and freeze them in zip-lock bags and I do the same with peppers. So, when it is time to cook, all I have to do is open up a few zip-lock bags and pour the stuff into the pot. Right now, I still have a lot of onions, tomatoes, peppers and corn in the freezer. By about Feb. or early March, though, I am counting the ziplock bags left in the freezers, and hoping we have enough home-grown stuff to last until we can harvest again. Dawn

I've never posted on a TGIF thread before but I played hookie today so I could have a nice 4 day weekend. My weekend started last night. I bought that 5 minute artisan bread book and made a batch of the dough for today. I have only made bread in a bread machine prior to this. It mixed up easily in the mixer. Today I pulled it out and touched dough for the first time ever. It was a sticky mess. LOL I couldn't get it round so I plopped it on the peel. Then I decided it was way too flat so I picked it up and kept adding flour trying to get it round. What an amusing experience. I had flour all over my slippers and the dog by the time I was done. It wound up being the height off a ciabatta in the middle. We ate it for lunch even though it looked a little silly. The good news is I have a bowl full of dough in the fridge to keep trying. Any tips? Today must be a day of firsts. I have never had chili before because I am not a big fan of beans and I have only recently started liking spicy foods. I just made the RR chicken chorizo chili and it is simmering away. I can't wait to taste it. Clinking with an amaretto on the rocks from sunny S Florida. I may have to hit the hot tub ater dinner. Don't worry, I will be thinking of you freezing people the whole time. :-> I remember what zero felt like. Brrrr!!!

Oh, man! It felt so good to sleep in this morning! Have had a hellish week at work and really need this day off!

Susi, sounds like you have a full schedule for the weekend, but it sounds like lots of fun stuff! Enjoy!

Sharon, finally some down time for you! you've been a busy little hostess lately, I am glad you're getting a breather!
By the way, your chili sauce is phenomenal! I finally used it last night. Only in sloppy joes (sorry) but it made them spectacular!

Well the sub-zero temps are supposed to break here and get back upwards of normal....I sure hope the weatherman is right! This brutal cold is making everyone cranky!

A day to myself today, I have a couple of errands to run, but nothing major in the plans. Tomorrow we will go to my son & daughter-in-law's new home for a combination birthday (Nate's)/ housewarming party. Should be fun.

Sunday I am not sure about yet. We may go look at stone for our fireplace, not sure.

Friday came so quickly for me this week. I was out one day with my friend Anne looking for a new sunbed and little patio table with umbrella but there's nothing on display until March. Apart from that I've been at the gym twice. So I guess going out several mornings a week tends to use up the days LOL. Beautiful warm weather here....today's forecast is for 25C (77F) again and I just came back from Pilates, walking home in the hot sun.

We're going to head out somewhere for lunch as I have to take some recycle plastic and tins in the car to the recycle bins.
Good excuse to stop at the French restaurant, as it's on the way.
Must prune some roses this weekend too but the sweet little things are blooming their heads off right now.
Seems a shame to cut them all down....oh well there's always maÃ±ana....and maÃ±ana.

Wish I could send some of this sunshine over the sea to those who need it!

TGIF everyone! I raise my cuppa Joe to you all.

What a long week in school. I really do NOT like the new Chef we have on staff now. He is Hungarian and incredibly RUDE. Very militaristic. I do not 'cotton' to being screamed at by anyone!

Local Mardi Gras celebration is this weekend. Erin and I will be attending a party at a friend's who lives right on the parade route. It will be fun if the weather holds. The local weather weenies are calling for 70% chance of rain.

Sharon - I'll take some of that sunshine please. It's cold here and gloomy.

Wooo-hoooo, I'm having a "snow" day. Actually, the predicted ice didn't happen, as usual, but the boss still called me and told me to stay home today. (I work at a nursery, and business is very slow this time of year.) I feel just like a kid getting to stay home from school. I might decide to bake, or I might decide to work on my cross stitch, or I might do both. I might even clean house some. Hmmm. I think I'll play. First I think I'll catch up on the "roll call" thread, which I haven't had much time to read.

The rest of the weekend looks quiet, too. I'll probably work tomorrow, and have an unscheduled weekend after that. I haven't had one of those for a while, so that should be nice.

Linda (Bessiedawg), what a feat you've accomplished, feeding all those people! Have fun with your puppies.

Linda (doucanoe), I'm sorry you've had such a bad week. Glad you can relax.

Susie and Chase, have fun with your weekends.

I bought an Nintendo Wii this week so I'll be bowling, playing tennis, have a few baseball games on tap, a little boxing and a few rounds of golf...whew...I'm exhusted!
Kim is planning on picking up the other Sport CD if she can and then our plan is to rent other games to try out...
This Wii thing is really fun.

Chase, let us know what you come up with. I "Iron Chef" from my kitchen every couple months over a few days. I try to reduce my inventory by one third without buying anything else. If I have to, I send hub or a kid to the store for a key ingredient or two (because I know I can't resist the urge to buy more). I get some unusual concoctions that way, a few that have even made it to the rotation.

Lately I've been babysitting one day a week at my son's. He and his wife get a big kick out of coming home to a dinner of things they didn't realize would make dinner. Sometimes I have to be awfully creative, though, as they have a rather bare cupboard.

I don't know why I got started on this. Sorry.

Susie, you're sooo much a better person than I am. If Scott decided at the last minute to stay home and pal around with me, I'd be thrown totally off course and probably be a b!tch for the first couple hours at least!

Chase, sounds nice. Scott leaves tomorrow for France - well, he's driving to his parents and then flying out. It'll just be me and my other guy...and Sammy and Bob. Have you met Bob? I finally got a good pic of him...aint he cute?

Linda, I know what you mean about everyone being cranky! And I top the list!

Will and I will be taking the fourth Harry Potter to my mom's this weekend to watch with her. We're trying to get her through them, before she forgets what happened in the previous one, but it's hard. ah well, she enjoys the company if she understands the movies or not...

Busy weekend here,

Denise (our daughter) and her husband Nathan are flying in from NC on Sat. We are having a baby shower for her on Sun at my brother's house in Sacto,Ca hope the weather hold to get over the summit at Donner....
She is about 5 1/2 month along and I can't wait to see her tummy. They are having a boy, (Holden Ellis). I'll be flying back and forth a lot to see the first grand-baby...Trying to talk DH into moving to NC, we both have visited and love it there.

Sorry I'm rambling, but you can't blame me I'm getting excited!!!!!!!!!

How exciting for you Linda!

I got back from FLA, where it started out sunny and ended up cloudy, to my home where it's been cold and rainy. But we need the rain - it's always like this - years of drought, then a good rainy season.

I'm a little sick with a head cold. Often happens when I fly - what's up with that? I also haven't played any ping pong and don't think I should today either. I'll see how I feel by my lesson time on Sunday.

I've been doing a lot of flying this past year and I'm quite sick of it - not the traveling, but the dang security lines and airplanes with no space. I sit there all cramped and wonder how people bigger than me handle it (and most people are bigger than me!) How do larger folks handle those teeny bathrooms? How can they even call it a bath-ROOM? It's so dehumanizing, degrading and uncivilized and goes against my basic nature of princess-hood!

So I haven't unpacked my bag or gone shopping for food. Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow? At least the housekeeper was here and the house is clean, and Odo is happy with his new pet sitter.
