Help on Outlook Express and Question on Posts

How can I re-arrange my addresses on the left side of my screen in Outlook Express? I want them listed by the last name.

Also, I used to get the reply answers to my posts sent to my email address. It does not do that anymore. I have to come back here to read the replies.

Betty, I have searched all over for a way to have the contact list appear last name first, but I can't find a way to do that, either. When I click Address Book, there they are listed with the last name first.

The second part of your post is an I-Village thing, and I have read others' complaints about the same thing. Seems that checking the item to receive an e-mail to responses does not work.

to the second part, I'll add this. It works part of the time, part of the time. Other times it either works right or not at all. I hang at the Test Forum, and test it out there every so often. I think I always get them all on that particular forum.

sometimes even emails from people you know really are not from people you know! I just got an email from my nephew who often times sends me links to see his kids on little videos or picture albums. Yesterday when I got the email from him and noticed all the email addresses at the top that struck me as strange because he is like me and never leaves email addresses exposed, then on to the link, before I clicked it I hovered my mouse over it and looked down at the bottom of my browser to see if it would give the same address as the link well it did NOT, which let me know this was going to re-direct me somewhere else. That is how people end up on porn sites and infected sites with out knowing how they got there! Since I was on linux and was not afraid of infection I clicked the link and sure enough it took me to some viagra site. Which if I had gone there on my windows machines may well have tried to install some type of malware. So I emailed my nephew immediately to let him know he had a problem. He thankfully was already aware of it and was scanning with malwarebytes to see what showed up. Something had taken over his email and sent that out to everyone in his list which is why all those email addresses were showing, so it looked like it was from him but it was not really him that sent it. So anytime you have a link in an email it is a very good idea to hover your mouse over it and see if it shows the same address down below as it does in the link. This is one reason I hate those short links since you have no idea what the link is going to.

Update: I just called her on the phone. She does not use Outlook. She uses something like ATT Yahoo for her email. When she goes into Programs....and tries to open Outlook Express, she gets some message that mentions there is an error....and goes on to talk about a POP server....and other things way over my head. I suggested that she call her provider for some help. It was over my head. I thank you raven and Bob for your messages. Larry

There is a very effective program that you can download for free called "Spam-Aid", it will block ALL messages that are from anyone that is not listed in your address book.It is installed on your computer as a separate program and you can use it, or bypass it to check your email the usual way without anything being blocked. Just keep in mind when using Spam-Aid to check you mail, EVERYTHING is blocked and deleted at the server except for messages from those that are listed in your address book. It is very effective at what it does, I use it and am well pleased with it. I might add that the program does have a way for those whom you know that are not listed in your address book to get a messsage delivered to you by way of a "password" which they can obtain from a clue you give them in setting up the program. gmom, Here is the link that is most likely to save your day: www.OEHelp.com/OETips Scroll down to the red 'Update'. Have a read, but before you do anything else, download the free programme Outlook Express Quick Backup (don't worry about the command line instructions because you never use them - you just push the buttons). Before you run OE Quick Backup create a new Backup Folder (preferably on another drive) e.g. 'Current'. Run OE Quick Backup and select the 'Current' folder then click 'Backup All'. Once your latest data is safely backed up in 'Current' create a couple more folders e.g. 'Old 2008' and 'Old 2007'. This is because, if things work o.k., you are likely to end up with several .dbx files with the same name and you need to save them in different places - as explained in the next paragraph. So, to recover e.g. an old "Sent" email folder copy sent.bak and save it to your current identity as sent1.dbx and then backup that to "Old 2008". A quick word about .bak files - when Widows saves a later version of any file with the same name as the original one it changes the extension of the original file to .bak e.g. text.txt to text.bak and program.exe to program.bak. This gives you only one chance to 'easily' recover your data because if you save again using the same name then the first .bak file is overwritten - this is windows way of preventing your hard drive from becoming full with obsolete files. N.B. My Windows theory might not be 100% correct (I am both old and self-taught!) but the general principles are about right and it could save you from corrupting anything that you do manage to recover. Having replies sent directly to the original poster does not seem like a good idea to me. That means the OP might have the cure but fail to return to tell others. Many lurkers come to places like this, how can they gain insight if there are no follow up posts?

I have researched this on my Vista Windows Mail system and I currently don't have access to my old Win98 system with OE. (Garage is snowed in)

On the Windows Mail system I opened the addressbook and right clicked on an entry. The drop down window appeared and I selected Properties. The appearing window showed the addressee, Richard Nixon :) among other items.

I just back spaced the name out and reentered it as Nixon Richard, and selected OK. The entry took up a new spot in the addressbook now under N.

Perhaps this will also work with OE. When it thaws a bit I can check for you.

DA, I think what Betty is referring to is the Contacts list on the left side of the layout. Even though the drop down list in Address Book has the names "Nixon, Richard", in the Contacts list it shows as "Richard Nixon". When you get a chance to check OE on your other computer, see if yours are this way, and if you can get the last name first in that list.

If you have turned on autocomplete , when you type in R it should give you all the R choices and then you can choose from Richard Childless, Rebecca J. Pearch, or Richard Nixon.

By Default OE doesnt have a list of contacts on the left. But if you could alpha order them by second word then Wal-Mart would become Mart-Wal - and that just doesnt look right.

With XP, OE 6, if You open your contacts properties window, you can choose how you want their names "displayed"......Example...I have Beverly Adams in my book. I choose her to be displayed as "Adams, Beverly and that puts her in alha order in my contact list to the left.

Thanks for this info, Jean. However, as soon as I choose the display the way I want it, I get the message that OE has encountered a problem and must shut down. Very frustrating.

I just tried Jean's suggestion on my desktop and it worked. It was on the laptop that OE shut down. Both are XP Media Center Edition; the laptop is a newer machine. Strange.
