Tell me how you like/dislike your drawer refrigerator

I was thinking on buying one as a second refrigerator mainly to keep fruits and veggies in. Also to help out the other side of kitchen for refrig access.

How do you like yours and would you buy another one. AND what brand do you have.

I have a counterdepth Kitchenaid single door bottom mount freezer. I love opening the refrigerator door and having everything in full view as opposed to bending down to see the contents of a top mount freezer.

I assumed Linda's question was about refrigerator drawers, not regular refrigerators. Is that correct, Linda? If so, I don't have them, but would be interested as well in responses from people who have one, and how they like it...

I use a recipe from the Iowa State Fair's Blue Ribbon Cookbook: Ingredients: 2Lb Boneless Beef Chuck, cut into 1" cubes. 1 medium (About 1.5 Lbs) Beef soup bone. In Iowa, these are from the leg shank. 1 Carrot, pared & quartered 1 Celery Stalk with green leaves attached cut in half or thirds depending on the size. 1 Medium onion Quartered 1 Bay Leaf 1 Teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper About 8 cups water 2 Cups home made beef stock or 14.5oz store bought beef stock. 12 ounces egg noodles. NOTE! Store bought noodles just don't work well with this recipe! I make my own using 1 egg, 2 cups flour, pinch of salt & 1/8 teaspoon white pepper. (see Below) If needed for thickening: 2 Tablespoons Flour 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup water Method: In a large,heavy bottomed stock pot or ceramic lined cast iron pot, add the first 8 ingredients: beef cubes, salt, pepper, bay leaf, soup bone, celery, carrot, water to cover (about 8 cups). Cover the pot and heat over high heat until it reaches a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer until the beef cubes are fork-tender about 1 hour 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and using a slotted spoon, remove the beef cubes and place in a bowl. Remove the soup bone and trim any lean meat, cut into bite-sized pieces, and add to the beef cubes. Discard the bone. I usually remove the marrow and add to the stock or give the whole bone to a worthy dog. Cover the bowl of meat and refrigerate. Strain the remaining stock with a sieve into a bowl or Large measuring cup discarding the vegetables and bay leaf. Measure the liquid and make a note of how much you have. Pour the liquid into a large mixing bowl and refrigerate. When cold, use a tablespoon or large spoon to skim the congealed fat off the top of the broth and discard the fat. Cover the remaining broth and refrigerate. All of the previous steps can be done ahead of time, even the day before. 30 Minutes before serving: In a large pot, add the reserved broth, and enough other stock to total 10 Cups of liquid. stir to blend. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Add the Noodles to the boiling stock/broth. boil uncovered until slightly soft (about 8 minutes) add the beef cubes, boiling briefly until heated through. If the broth looks thick enough, like a thin gravy, you are done. If it is too thin, make the thickening out of the ingredients listed above. By adding them to a seal-able jar, cover and shake vigorously until smooth and all clumps are gone. Add this thickening sauce to the pot and simmer briskly until the broth thickens. (About 2 minutes) Serve immediately. In Iowa, they are served over mashed potatoes, but are delicious by themselves. Egg Noodles: On a large surface, put the 2 cups of flour in a mound, making a well in the center. Break the egg into the well, and using a fork, stir the egg only until well mixed. add the salt and white pepper to the egg. Continue stirring more and more of the flour into the egg until a dough ball begins to form. Knead until smooth, and roll out thin, dusting the board with flour to keep from sticking until the dough is about 1/8". Cut the dough into 4" strips, placing one on top of the other adding a light dusting of flour between each layer. Once all the strips are stacked, turn so you can cut the 4" side into the desired thickness. (I like about 1/4 to 3/8" thick noodles.) The finished noodles will be 4" x 1/8" x 1/4". Place the noodles on a large cookie sheet and dust well with flour to keep them separated until they are dried out, about 2-3 hours. Shake the majority of the flour off before adding the noodles to the broth.

Patti bee brings up a very good point. The location of the garage is very important. It has to be in a spot that is convenient as far as location of the appliances, but not such that it gets in the way. My garage sticks out farther than the other upper cabinets (18") due to the way the lift up pocket door works. Because of this, I had to find a spot for it that had enough counter space in front of it to allow me to pull things out and use them outside of the garage. I went through many iterations of my kitchen layout, and one of the things that gave me the hardest time was where to put the garage. With an 18" depth, placing it on a regular 24" deep counter would only leave 6" of workspace in front of the garage. Thus the placement on the wall end of my peninsula was the ultimate solution. Not only did that provide an entire peninsula counter in front of the garage, but it also gave me usage for a space which normally would not have gotten much use at all. In point of fact, it does sort of break up the peninsula workspace which I use for prep 90% of the time, from the to-the-right-of-the-cooktop workspace. But that works for me because those two workspaces have completely separate purposes so there's not a lot of interaction between the two. There was at least one other spot in my kitchen that the garage could have gone without breaking up the workspace, but again, it was paramount that the appliances be in the spot where I would do my prep most often. So in order to be a good addition to the kitchen, it must be in a location that is convenient to the workspace without taking up necessary workspace. A delicate balance!

Have you taken your layout to the Kitchens Forum? A lot of layout mavens there don't spend a lot of time in Appliances. Yes, an oven, combi- microwave stack would be too high. Vaguely possible if the oven were at the lowest position at floor level, but that's a hateful place to put an oven. That's lower than a range oven would be. Combi-steam ovens are not good for low mounts. Some can't, but also when you open the door that low, unless you're conscientiously using a steam removal function, which generally takes half a minute, you're putting the steam out right where you don't want it. Many people are happy with undercounter microwaves, but just under. Not lower. Look into drawer versions as well as standard. If you're accustomed to watching, however, you're right that it's not a great height. On the other hand, ovens don't take a lot of tending, and sit very happily outside of the main workpath. You don't want them so far away that moving a heavy pot between cooktop and oven is difficult, but if shifting them over six feet makes everything flow much better, that works fine. In fact, some people don't like to have the ovens crowding the stove. Often a microwave is useful nearer to the fridge/beverage/snack area, but close enough to the cooking zone to not have to trek with your melted butter. The ideal level to lift a turkey from is approximately waist, or low-waist, where you can create the greatest muscle tension in your arms. Think of the classic flex your biceps angle, but with your arms down. It's easy to use a lever action from your knees and hips in that position, and not rely on your back to lift. You just kind of shift the pan over to the landing area, rather than having to do a snatch first. See if you can find a friend or showroom with similar layouts to what you're considering and play cook--or really cook if you can--to try it on. Bring pots and weights (large cans of tomatoes or bricks).

Drying issues with Bosch and other European dishwashers is generally caused by user error. Yes, they won't dry as well as the old Hobart KitchenAids with forced air, as there still might be some water drops on plastics, but they should do the job for 95% of people when used correctly. Based on the age of your KA it would have the Whirlpool Powerclean module in it. This was one of the best dishwasher pumps ever made. Great water pressure, powerful grinder, reliable. Unfortunately that is no longer being made and the new KA's, while certainly not the worst dishwasher on the market, aren't what they once were. It's very important that you go to the store and check out the racking of all these dishwashers. That's a great way to eliminate ones that you know won't work for you. For example, many European dishwashers have more tightly packed tines that can create an issue with some dishes. If the interior works for you, and service is available in your area, my top pick for a new DW would be Miele. The nice thing about them is that the models differ only in features and noise level - they are all the same quality. Knowing this, I bought the cheapest one with the cutlery rack for $1000, which is competitive with Bosch, KA, etc. I like how quiet it is, even though it is the loudest model they make. I like how well it cleans despite the noise level. I like how well-built it feels, and I like how simple it is to use and that it has front controls, so I always know when it's running and how much time is left in the cycle. The only things I don't like about it are that if it breaks down later on, I probably won't be able to fix it myself, I will have to use Miele authorized repair people only, and I'll have to pay high prices for parts. Miele dishwashers can be connected to a cold water line, and the higher end models have a special glassware cycle that is designed for use with the cold water hookup. It will give you the perfect water temp for washing your wine glasses.

I saw these in a friend's kitchen - but the reality is the cost was much higher than I expected - I thought of putting in our pantry but ruled it out.
If you have space and $$$, go for it! My friend has the KA version - 2 drawers - one is fridge and the other a freezer

I love my refrigerator drawers by Electrolux. They are capacious, hold a steady cold 36 or 37 and are quiet. They are so convenient to keep traffic out of the cooking area and into the eating area as well as keeping overflow produce and baking stuff and drinks for company. It's everything I could have wanted. Its easy to pull out a drawer:I could not crawl on the floor to search for stuff. They were advertised as being 6 cu. ft.

For a bit, it was freezing lettuce but that's b/c dh and I each fiddle with the controls. He can't have his cokes icy enough-which harms the produce. We have peace now.

Downside was the price-about $2k. I spent more on the drawers than on our main fridge-our big splurge. We so love it. Electrolux.

So how big is regular refrigerator? I am thinking about getting a 36" refrigerator and then supplementing with the drawers on my island. I've noticed that a few people with 54" or 60" refridges also have these drawers, but I am not sure I need that much space!

Firsthouse, our main fridge is LG fd. 36" wide, 25 cu ft of fridge space and a nice amount of freezer space(can't remember the freezer amount). We do have a freezer in the basement.

Depends on your needs. Teenagers? Vegetarians needing lots of produce? My dh and I used to fight over his obsession to have lots of icy cold cokes, even tho he only drinks two per day. And somebody's butt was always looking in the fridge while I was frantically trying to cook. And we had an old narrow, small sxs. If I buy too much produce, I just pile it up in the drawers.

My big fridge is 34.25 inches deep, including the handles.

We've put one in our new kitchen on the "non-work" side of the island at our beverage center area.
I'd assumed that I'd go with a SubZero as that's what we chose for our main fridge and I've got a huge loyalty thing going with SZ after having a trouble free fridge for over 25 years.
But when we went appliance shopping, I was shocked that the SZ drawers were substantially smaller than the Kitchen Aid. The height difference in each drawer was several inches and it was enough to mean that wine bottles and our glass milk bottles couldn't be stored standing up.
Since our main use is as a beverage center/bar fridge this was a deal breaker.
Kitchen Aid and Jenn-Aire seem to be identical as far as I can tell other than a different color interior. The JA was about 175 more and had a shorter warranty so I chose the Kitchen-Aid.
We've used it for about 2 weeks now and as a bar fridge, it works fine. I don't know how it would keep greens, produce etc.
There is a pretty noticeable hum when they're cooling but nothing awful. I do wonder if the SZ would have been quieter, but still wouldn't have made a different choice. The drawers aren't self close and don't exactly "glide" so with a big load of heavy drinks you have to be sure that the drawers close all the way. Same with the freezer which is down so low. The alarm that lets you know that the drawer is ajar is VERY useful.... with 8 people in and out of the drawers almost constantly over the holiday, we heard the door ajar chime several times!

I have two refrigerator drawers by subzero, it's actually the wine refrigerator with two drawers below. It is one of my most favorite things in our kitchen, we use ours to store juice, milk (in glass bottles, they fit), beer, cokes, water etc. one is deeper than the other. With two kids, they are in and out all the time and it is perfect when we entertain. No drawbacks... Love them.

I really like the thought of these but not sure I can swing the cost of a refrigerator, a wine refridge, a beverage refridge and also these drawers....thinking that the bev refridge might be the substitute for these. I am wondering whether I'd use the bev fridge or the fridge drawers more.

We have True refrigerator drawers in our prep area to hold all the fruits and veggies. I love it. It is absolutely quiet, very well made with stainless interior, soft closing drawers. Having everything right at hand when making a salad is a dream. We put panels on so they are fully integrated. I chose these and went with a 30" fridge/freezer that does not have enough room for all the produce my garden generates.
