Simplest first, have you tried a complete shut down and reboot?

click Printers and faxes
now open each item listed and delete anything in the print queue.

Since this is an "identical" printer I ask:

Did you just physically swap the original out with the replacemnt, or did you uninstall the original according to HP instructions and then install the replacement?

owbist: Yes, I tried a complete shut down and reboot. Also, I have had problems trying to delete anything in the print queue.

damccoy: True to my bull headed nature, I disconnected the old printer and hooked up the replacement. I didn't go to the HP site until it was too late. If I had it to do all over again, I would start with the HP site. Oh, well, live and learn. I even downloaded new drivers. I honestly thought that if the printers were identical, all one would have to do is remove one and plug the other in and Windows (X-P) would install the correct drivers after a startup.

Well if it were me I would remove all the software relating to the printer and start over. HP are very specific, even to the point of telling you when during the procedure to plug the printer in so the software can recognise it.

On a side note, if this is a wireless printer I would strongly suggest you use a cable until contact has been reached. I say this from experience with a couple of troublesome HP wireless all in ones. The cure was easy once the cable was attached. It can be removed after of course.

If still available I would again hook-up the original printer and uninstall it according to HP instructions. Then do a clean install of the replacement printer.

HP uninstalls are fussy, but historically work well if their steps are followed.

The HP site is very confusing to a novice, but, it doesn't take much to confuse me.

Good to hear. Being without a printer can be frustrating, and of course failure only happens when you need it.

As I may need one any day if I bring a project home I keep an older second one attached and configured as a back up. Just one negative experience is a good teacher. The good printer is just set to default.

For my future reference, and certainly for the benefit of other members, what did you do to remedy your concern?

Folks, here's what I did to get the replacement printer operational. I deleted all the files that I could that related to HP, drivers and all. Then, from the HP site, I downloaded the drivers they suggested. Then all was well.
Let me say again, the replacement printer is the same model as the one I un-hooked. My very simple mind thought that the same drivers should work on both printers.

And did you delete their corresponding registry keys? I bet you didn't. It's likely that simply installing the new driver would fix the problem because it would change the registry as needed. But the next time you have trouble (with HP or any other program), you should resist the urge to start deleting things. When the registry starts calling for files that aren't there because you accidentally deleted something important, you'll have more than enough error messages to keep you busy.

I am not recommending you delete any registry entries as you only know the computer experience you have. I am suggesting however that CCleaner's Registry utility when run will give you a report of orphaned registry entries.

Now comes the generic DA warning: If you do decide to delete entries do not guess as to them. Be certain to their focus, and accept the offered backup to change.
