Thanks again, everyone! During the visit of DD and her partner, who live 3000 miles away, and with my DS joining us, we've had a lovely few days together as a family again. For my birthday, they took me to dinner at a local Afghan restaurant (I had Kabuli, a dish of stewed lamb, rice, carrots, and raisins; also had a great spiced pumpkin appetizer). Afterward, my DS invited us all to his apartment for a dessert of cannoli, macaroons, coffee, and brandy. Yesterday, we went to the art museum and came home for the spinach lasagna I had prepared. We spent another afternoon looking through old family photos. We've played a lot of board games and card games, too. We'll see them off at the airport this afternoon. What a wonderful birthday week! Thanks so much, everybody! Annie, I DO have time to post today, because the partying was done last night, when DH and I attended the bar mitzvah celebration of a cousin's twin sons. To keep this food-related: after munching on appetizers, we dined on filet mignon, Chilean sea bass, asparagus, roasted potatoes, salad, and fruit-nut bread. For dessert, there were two birthday cakes (chocolate and vanilla) plus make-your-own ice cream sundaes. It was all very wonderful and delicious. Tonight's dinner will certainly pale in comparison, but I think we need something light. My daughter's birthday gift is a cookbook, Quiches, Kugels, and Couscous: My Search for Jewish Cooking in France, by Joan Nathan. It's filled with stories and mouth-watering photos, and I can't wait to dive in. Thanks again for all your good wishes, Sue

Good to hear that you had an enjoyable dinner with friends, Sue. Only half of the greatness of a dinner is the food - the other half is the folks with whome one shares it. (For those of us who live alone ... the only way that one can "share" it is to put a big mirror on the top of the table ... on the other side of the food [but the conversation can only be referred to as talking to one's self]). (Were one to "eat for two" in such a circumstance ... the food wouldn't "go to waste" - but would "go to waist", I reckon). Good wishes and hopes for a great year upcoming, Sue. ole joyful

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes. It was such a full day! First had to take husband to the wound care clinic and then to his family doctor and then back home again. Cheryl and I then picked up Amber and Alyssa and headed to Pizza Shack in another town and met with my son Randy and his soon to be bride Erica. Terri, Mandy and Alex could not join us. I bought the kids their meals and we had a nice visit and great food. I like that there I can get just a plate pizza, lots of toppings and no crust. I love the salad bar there too. Alyssa was happy to give me the birthday card from her and she decorated it with stickers of horses and flowers. She also gave me two small coloring books. Very nice day but so long and tiring. Oh, thanks so much to all of you! I know I've been MIA from the Cooking Forum lately (actually, I'm still here but mostly lurking these days). It's nice to know I'm still remembered.

This b'day is a big one; I am officially "over the hill" now, enrolled in Medicare and starting to draw my pension. But life today seems pretty much the same as yesterday, so I'm not troubled by it (much). Celebrating all weekend sounds good, but I expect to be working (freelancing is always feast or famine, so I usually don't turn down assignments, even if it means working through a weekend).

My DS is coming over for dinner. I'll cook (it won't be fancy, just turkeyburgers with gravy left over from the Thanksgiving turkey, Spanish rice with added green pepper and diced tomatoes, and some kind of green veggie). Maybe, if I'm lucky, there will be a surprise for dessert.
