Tell me what I need

I'd like to be able to download a few dozen classical pieces from a free (and legal) download site onto a "device" (???) that will also play a couple of local radio stations (NPR fm). It should have an ear piece (blue tooth ?) that has no wires since I need to wear a hat. This is to be used on daily walks, nothing more, nothing less.

What is the simplest thing I can get to do this, nothing more, nothing less, and where can I go for the downloads?

You have undoubtedly guessed that I am from another world (previous generation several times back).

Bob, I'm in there with you. I've heard of IPODS and MP3 players, but that's it. Whatever you end up with you might want to kidnap a 14 year old and tell them that you'll let them go when they get your machine working. Ha! Grady

Ha ha, Grady is right. The kids know all this stuff. My daughter bought an iPod at the sales, her 7 and 8 year olds knew exactly what is was for. No doubt they will also take possession in short order.

The sausage place was wonderful. The person who helped us was very knowledgable. No lard or pork belly available today. Bought 20 german bratwurst. Went to a nearby Wegmans that is more "international" than the Wegmans that I usually go to. After way too much time standing in Wegmans trying to make a decision.... I purchased Morrell Snow cap lard. It does say "with hydrogenated lard bht and bha added to help protect flavor". I'm going to try it with the idea of going back to the sausage place to get pure lard when they have it available. For this weekend, If the crullers don't come out with the Morrel lard I will use crisco. I will try them again with pure lard when I get it. Many of you make rendering lard look easy but I need to make sure I don't run out of time with hosting two parties this weekend. Thank you all for the help! On a side note, I dropped off my grandmothers cookbook at a binding repair shop. The cover is completely off. They are going to put on a new cover trying to make it look as much as the original as possible. Kinda of sad to replace the original cover but its the only way to make the book usable.

How many rooms do you have? The cost differential with mini splits goes up as the number of rooms does. Have you considered some of the small air handlers that work with the mini split outdoor units? They blur the line between central and mini split. You might be able to use these were ducts can be run easily between two or three rooms and use high wall units, that you are probably used to, elsewhere. That looks like a pretty home. At first, I warmed to the idea of exposed ducts in a mod-looking house. On second look, I am not sure I'd like it. From one pic, it is hard to tell how to handle it. Is that soffit space near the ceiling to the right in that hallway picture? If it is, couldn't duct go in there? You might be able to hide a small AHU above that closet (or is that a laundry?). Another option might be to widen that support beam with a hollow addition on the side for duct space inside. Make it look like the whole thing is a beam. I would not be afraid to partially hide the ducts either. I've seen that done in buildings that are not homes. A partially-open ceiling can be treated to make the ducts much less noticeable, but keeps the ceilings more open-feeling. What I mean is to cosmetically extend the exposed rafters in the hallway downward and run the ducts through openings cut in the cosmetic extensions. If you can figure out how to make the extensions structural, you could cut through the rafters near the ceiling, but don't ask me now that might be done.

Carol its easily -50 windchill just a few miles from you! LOL I am speaking in my direction! Thermometer is reading -14 right now and the wind is blowing harder than it has all day! DH's wind gauge is showing steady 45mph most of the time. How much snow do you have over there? I thought the very eastern part of the state wasn't supposed to get this, but I saw Fargo on the national news tonight, looked worse there. Bismarck area had 11.5 inches at 6 am this morning. I know we haven't got near that (thank goodness) only maybe 6??? Thats a guess, its too blame hard to tell! We have a drift waist high in front of the house. Shoveled 3 times for the dogs so far, betcha its gotta be done once more before bed.

I do look for good hip production in roses, and I've been tasting many of the ones I grow (haven't tried making tea yet). Some are as bland as cardboard, while others can be quite tasty (when ripe--they don't seem to have much flavor until then). The 2 roses with the most flavorful hips in my garden are Rosa californica 'First Dawn' and Rosa canina 'Laxa'. Both these roses are beloved by bees! First Dawn also has extremely fragrant flowers (pale pink and single) and blooms in massive trusses so that the whole area surrounding is perfumed. Almost every flower turns into a hip. They are small and chewy, with plenty of seeds but yet also have enough pulp/skin to chew. Birds seem to love them. Whether this is just because of the handy size or due to the taste (they seem to completely ignore the hips on some other roses), I don't know. First Dawn does have thorns, however they are not in the attack realm such as those on the rose Mermaid. First Dawn will climb with support and is shade tolerant. FD also suckers like crazy. I don't know if this rose would grow well or not in Florida. In my garden FD flowers off and on all year long. Rosa canina 'Laxa' is a once-blooming species but it has a long bloom period in spring. Flowers are very pale pink and appear along the canes rather than on the top. Like FD, almost every flower turns into a hip. The hips are bigger than FD and have even more flavor. This rose will also climb with support. It is almost thornless. Flowers are only lightly fragrant. Laxa has only suckered a tiny bit so far in my garden, but I haven't had all that long yet. From the literature, I understand that R. canina is frequently used to make tea, and since the hips are high in vitamin c, they are still used to make cough/throat syrup. Good drought tolerance, but I don't know about shade as mine is in mostly full sun all day. My soil is fairly fast draining sandy loam. I don't know how well Laxa would do in Florida either. Radio Shack has an MP3 with an fm tuner that does what I want. I have checked out a few free download sites, and it appears that it takes quite some time to download a piece -- a drag!

If I buy the music I want on a CD, how do I transfer it to an MP3? Do you put the CD into the CD rom slot in the computer, put it into a file, and then transfer the file to the MP3 using the MP3 cabel hookup to the computer USB port?

To get music from CDs to the MP3 format, the CD needs to be "ripped" or converted from the CD format with a software program. Then the MP3s can be copied to your player. Right off hand, I can't name the program but there are several free ones. One may be Audacity.

I believe Windows Media Player, which you probably already have on your computer, will rip those CDs for you. That's what my resident 14yo uses.

MP3 players usually come with their own software, too.

My kids rarely listen to their CDs directly. They bring them home, rip them, and copy the songs to their MP3 players. Then they can listen to the music from either their computers or MP3 players. The CDs get put away (lost?) as backup.

This has been an education. Now, another related question. These MP3 players come with ear buds. I assume these are cheap and are generally replaced with better ones by most folks. True? If so, how much should I spend on better ear buds? Looks like about $10-$12. Thanks!

The download time is dependent on the speed of your internet connection as well as the load on the server sending you the data (song, video, file, etc)

If you use a dial up (modem) connection your downloads will take a long time.

If you are on cable or DSL, your download should go relatively quickly. HOWEVER, even if it's slow, you should see no slowdown on the rest of your activities while downloading in the background.

Give the ear buds a try. Some of them are really not all that bad. Just depends on how much of an audiophile your are.

Yup...give 'em a try...the ones on my Zen Vision M are pretty darned good.... :-)
