No your Anti Virus Software is not going to detect everthing and will miss some infections at times. If you think you have an infection run malwarebytes see instructions. That's only the start of the process. There are some online scanners you can use but those are generally used after Malwarebytes has been run.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
 Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
 If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
 Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
 The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
 When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
 Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
 When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
 The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
 Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

I like MBAM as I use and recommend it. I also use and recommend SUPERAntispyware. I keep both on my system and they do not conflict.

Please note that neither of these applications operate in real-time behind the scenes like your AV. They are on-demand so you have to activate them to scan.

Remember to keep the dat files updated.

In addition to zep516's instructions: Most online scanners do not remove malware, they only detect it! Also, it is easy to be enticed by on-line scanners that are actually known as scamware that on many occaisions will cause an infection,and lead you to believe that you are infected with HUNDREDS of virus's,etc. to get you to buy a program that is worthless!

Malwarebytes is a free program. Be sure to select the free version from the link in his post above, and be sure to update before running the scan.

Ah yes! Free wallpaper, smiley face, font, and lyric sites are historically notorious for malicious behavior. If you have a need of those services research the site thoroughly before using.

Thanks for the advice. I down loaded malwarebytes and ran it. It showed I had two trojans which I removed. This might be a stupid question, but when I scan my computer, does it include Outlook Express? Another question is how often should I run Malwarebytes?

It does not scan out going or incoming E-Mails Usually your Anti Virus Scans the e-mail. Once a week is good to run Malwarebytes or if you feel there is a problem with the computer run it, but, always make sure you choose up-date before you run the scan.

@ maime...Good for you! If you don't have "Web of Trust" downloaded on your computer...You should have. Download it from zep's thread above!!!!

@ mst....If you found 2 Trojans, and they were quarantined, it doesn't necessarily mean that your computer is clean. Trojans can leave residuals behind and drop other malware that could go undetected. If you do any on-line banking, shopping on-line,etc. I would advise you to go to a malware removal forum and verify that you are clean.

I downloaded web of trust but am not sure how it works.

you have to register on Web of trust to create your page there but other than once it is installed any time you do a google search for example you will now see at the end of each entry a green, yellow or red circle that tells you if the site is safe (green) shady (yellow) or dangerous (red) also at the top of your browser near the url bar you sill see one of those circles to tell you if the page you are on is safe. If you attempt to go to a RED listed site it will block the page with a full page red wot warning. You can click on the circles to find out info on that page and why it got bad ratings.
The reason you have a wot page is so that you too can add your contribution, if you find a page that is shady or dangerous you can add your rating also any good sites add a good rating.
I urge people when they do a rating to please also put a comment in the comment section telling why it is being rated that way.

It's been some time now that I worked for a mental health facility. Documentation HAD to be detailed/precise for the Psych's & Doc's. I am now realizing how helpful my training back "when" has helped with posting now. zep..well he thinks I over-do-it! But, we know! Don't we. (wink) Hard to not add extra when you been programmed to...lol!
