Hard drive cloning

Two or three weeks back I was browsing this forum and someone wrote about a program that Western Digital had for cloning your hard drive. My drive is getting very noisy and I am ready with another drive but can't remember the name of that program nor can I google and find it. I would appreciate any help you can give.

These 2 programs are probably the most used Acronis True Image and Symantec Ghost.

It sounds like you want to move the data more then just back it up. You should be able to accomplish that with an external drive. The question is, do you have enough music or other files to warrant purchasing a 750 GB drive over a 320GB A couple things to remember, the external drives are great for a temporary storage medium, but I would rather have them on a solid medium as a backup such as a dvd. They do go bad as often as, and sometimes more often then internal drives. I have been working on computers for a long time, and I never understood why someone would back up the whole computer versus just their data. Most of the programs do not have the ability to restore your computer from a backup. You should have the setup cds or dvd from your computer so you should be able to (if needed) reinstall the operating system from scratch should the drive go bad or you get a virus that kills it. There are programs out there that can backup the whole system, but why would you want to? Raid, This is where you have 2 or more hard drives running the same data/ os. If your computer came with the ability to do a raid setup it is usually just 2 or more hard drives with the same data on it. For a detailed description it would be best to do a google search for it. There are different levels of raid. In my experience, the lower levels of raid aren't of much use. I have seen cases where the main drive dies and the data is not readable. In the higher levels of raid, it is spread out or stripped over several different drives and protects you from data loss. Over all, I think for home use it is just best to use a good backup strategy for data (CD or DVD or Tape) of the actual data and should something bad happen, you can restore the data and load the OS from scratch. So long as you've backed up any important data files, I wouldn't fret about losing these antique programs. There are many choices of free and easy to use software you can press into service in a flash. Even Google Drive (formerly Google Docs) offers free software-like apps for word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, etc., that are completely compatible with current competing programs (which what you now have may not be). And, file backups are unnecessary (unless you're paranoid), Google keeps your files in their proverbial "cloud". To replace your (almost) 10 year old version of Quicken, try Mint. Now owned by Intuit, it's free, highly recommended and widely used. Play with it now, switch over on Jan 1, and wave goodbye to Quicken 2003. Or, get a new Quicken, it's not that expensive and it'll serve you for another 10 years.

It doesn't quite work that way. When you clone the drive, you make an exact copy of it so that you can restore in case of a failure. The contents are usually not directly accessible unless you restore the image or if the company that makes the cloning software provides a utility to read the files from the image.

It would help to know what you intend to do with such a huge hard drive. Unless you have a demanding need -- like a lot of movie editing or a humongous mp3 collection -- it's not necessarily always the best thing to do. I have a variety of computers and none of them has more than 40GB taken up. And anything that I do have on them that I can't afford to lose is always backed up to another drive and/or a CD/DVD. A huge hard drive can a disadvantage for two main reasons: It encourages people to keep loading up the drive with a bunch of marginally useful programs, which slows down performance. It's tempting to not back up the drive, and then when the drive fails you've got 5 years of family photos down the drain. I'm not telling you not to do it. I'm just saying to assess your needs, your habits, and the importance of backing things up regularly to another drive or other storage media, and then decide whether you really need it. If you could explain a little more about what you want to do with increased storage capacity, it would be easier to give you advice relevant to your situation. Just my 2 cents...

Be careful with what you buy at Acronis. I've been using it
for a long time and the copy I have will clone a hard drive.
I don't believe the Acronis True Image 2010 will Clone.
I believe they have split it off to a separate buying option.
Their good but they have gone to price gouging.
Their product is always cheaper if you don't buy from their
Home page.

A modified version of Acronis True Image is available for Maxtor or Seagate hard drive owners.

I went to the website recommended by cboy and it is a program by Acronis for Western Digital. I haven't used it yet but did download it. It seems to be exactly what I was looking for. Luckily all my hard drives are Western Digital. If my old growler just lasts for a couple more days I will be fine. Thanks to you all.

Cboy do not underestimate Windows 7. This seems far more than Vista in camouflage.

windows 7 has an imaging feature built in. I am learning it, not crazy about 7 yet, just so different. I had an easier time learning linux so anyone that moves from xp to 7 can most definitely move from xp to linux!

My Sister-in-law has Vista and has been calling me for help.
It seems to me that Microsoft just scrambled Windows XP up
and gave things new names. Maybe their are some new things
that I would find if I own Vista or Windows 7
I may find out in a few days.

ravencajun could you give me a little more information on Windows 7 imaging? I just upgraded from XP to 7 and maybe that is what I should be using. Will it clone a hard drive?

In Windows 7 click Start, Control panel and in the new window look for 'System and security' (top left), click 'Back up your computer'.

Use the link below to see how to back up the entire hard drive or just the user and system files. That whole site is just Windows 7 and there is a wealth of information available there
