Win Patrol 2012

Folks I just received a e-mail from the folks at Win Patrol letting me know of their new WP 2012, I downloaded and when I began to install it, my AVG covered the screen with warnings. I clicked quaranteen and decided to see if anyone else had this problem.

X-P, SP-3 OE-6.

i just installed it over itself no screaming of Microsoft Security Essentials. I did install it from the web at WinPatrol website.

Just now ran Malwarebytes on its install folder... shows nothing bad.

I downloaded and installed it with no security warnings.I also use Microsoft Security Elements.

AZ, I understand what you are saying, but Emma makes a lot of sense. If users are not prepared for progress we would all still be using Commodores or in the least Win3.1. We have a whole bunch of Dell XP SP2 systems in our building. Six in our office alone. Ours are going to be replaced by a governmental entity due to security, non-MS software demand, and future anticipated expansion. You can bet many of the other offices will have to replace their systems via their budget as their offices have systems integrated for use with our data. And, we did survive without a burp when we switched from Win98 and Win2000 to WinXP. Bobbie, Hope you are sitting down. You know how I was dragged kicking and screaming into the post Win98 era as I loved my Win98 system. And, yes you know I love my Vista system even more and have defended it for all the bad publicity it received. My plans right now is to buy a entry to mid-level laptop with W8 just so I can play. See why I said I hope you were sitting down. Even though I think there is way too much going on now with the Internet, and can only guess as to what the future will bring we users have a choice. Be part of it or allow it to pass us by. Do I think everyone with a W7 should race out and purchase a W8? Of course not. However, two generations of O/S behind could become the future limit. DA

I would not allow site advisor to update in fact it is no longer on any of my machines, you can remove it from add remove programs. it once was a good tool, but it got very greedy and wanted to really take over and stopped letting people make changes to it,and started installing components with out letting people know just like what just happened to you with that application installer cleanup app, that upset a lot of people and many many people left it then which is when I left it. It is McAfee ! Now instead we suggest using WOT on all the browsers it does a better job and it is not intrusive into the system. Safe Browsing tool WOT Web of Trust I will see if Bill P the creator of winpatrol has a simple tutorial or if he knows of one and let you know. I know that Corrine has done some tutorials on it in the past.

Nearandwest, you have discovered the best forum on GW. The great people here have helped me out of so many problems, I couldn't even list them all! Its embarrassing, but each time I think I have learned everything, my computers hit me with more. It is an ongoing, learning process. Owbist...good minds think alike. I am only doing this to learn something about cleaning out nasties. Believe me, I told him to come for help and get his computer fixed, but he didn't...he started using my computers. That was the 'straw.' I'm not sure if I can use MS Security Essentials on his XP machine. It is 4 yrs old. Raven, you have the patience of a saint! He uses his computer in his office and I am rarely in there unless he yells for help with something. As a result, I think he would receive notifications of updates and just ignore them. There is no other reason for some versions of software being so old. I have been cleaning up his machine all weekend and discovered Spywareblaster hadn't been updated since 10/09. I downloaded Secunia and he had so many old and dead versions of things its ridiculous. I am setting everything to automatic. If I can run MS Security Essentials, I will. I ran MWB and it found 2 infections. I'm now running ESECT again and so far it has found another Trojan. So I guess I'll wait for Corinne to return and continue to work on it. At least its working and I'm able to see everything again, plus I can update things. Thanks for your support, this is certainly an interesting experience. Jane

WinPatrol StartUp:

I've heard from Bill and he is fixing the autorun option in the installer so later updaters will not have the same issue.

AVG False/Positive:

When installing WinPatrol 2012, AVG may detect WinPatrolEx.exe as an unknown virus called "Win32/DH.FF930004". This is a false/positive and has been reported to AVG.

WinPatrolEx.exe is WinPatrol Explorer, the main tabbed interface of WinPatrol.

If in doubt, scan the file at Virus Total: VirusTotal - Free Online Virus, Malware and URL Scanner

Would someone who has the new version installed please check the "About" to see specifically what version identifier they have. I'm finding both v24.0.2012 and v24.0.2012.1 available. Perhaps the fix has been completed.

As an AVG user I don't want to rush into the upgrade until the conflict is resolved.

I just downloaded and installed v2012.1 from Filehippo. My AVG didn't even blink so I guess the newer version is the way to go.

we have a winpatrol forum on LzD and this is from there
AVG False/Positive

also there was a problem with auto start not starting at boot up but from Bills twitter and also on our LzD site this info.
Thanks to everyone for their quick feedback. "Automatically run WinPatrol when computer starts" has been corrected in new installer.

You can always check that LzD winpatrol forum for info.

There was a small AVG update this afternoon. Virus database version 2109/4712 is reported to have been released December 30, 2011, at 2:34 a.m. I received it at 12:44 p.m. this afternoon well after my traditionally scheduled update at 6:00 a.m. this morning. This may have been the conflict remedy. Or maybe not.

I updated AVG and re-installed WinPatrol with no problem.

Bill P. is the greatest! Almost a year ago I had upgraded to Win Patrol Plus. I just finished completely restoring my XP computer, but did not have all programs saved. So I downloaded the latest free version and then tried to put in my name and registration number. It would not take, but I noticed an e-mail address given at the bottom of the site for help. I wrote and received a reply in a couple of hours. Seems I was putting a period after my middle initial, and that was the problem. Now I have the latest version of Plus duly registered.
