DVD drive

My DVD drive doesn't work and i'm told it's because i changed from Windows 7 to Windows 9. Do i have to buy a disk for windows 9 or should i go back to windows 7.I deleted the DVD drive that didn't work.

It couldn't have been windows 9. Windows 8 doesn't come out until sometime next year and windows 9 has to be at least a couple of years away.
It must have been something else you changed to version 9.

I think that you are confusing the terms .. Windows 7 and Windows "Explorer" 7?

One is an operating system while the other is a browser.

If this is the case we will still need more information.

I wanted to thank each of you for your suggestions about solving my problem. I tried each of your suggestions but without success, I wound up calling tec support and talked with a young man in the Philippines, he was very patient and got me through the process and I got the printer installed. Word of caution, read carefully the instructions when installing new hardware and when it says not to hook up the machine to the usb port before being told to do so during the installation process, DON'T DO IT. I was careless and it caused me a lot of aggravation........

I'd try reburning the CD that isn't working, and I'd use a program other than Roxio. (Roxio stuff isn't very good.) Windows can burn CDs though with a bit less convenience. Alternatively, if these are the same old-ish (XP) PCs you were talking about in the other post, it may be the drive is dying and you should restrict CD usage to the drive in the other PC. Third alternative, CDs are cheap. If this dying one can read "Closed" CDs but not still open ones, act accordingly. Fourth alternative, if you network the two PC's, you can read files saved on one from the other.

When you insert your CD I assume the activity light on the DVD player is activated for a few seconds? Your DVD would undoubtedly have the auto start feature where your photo CDs would not. So try right click on Start, click Explore in the pop up. Now look down the left side for your CD/DVD player and click on that to highlight. Hopefully all your photos or folders on that CD will now appear in the right side of your screen.

Editors note: There seems to be great deal of confusion about playing DVD's especially using Windows Media Player. WMP can indeed play DVD's..however..a DVD drive and "Codec" must be installed on the computer. The discussion below should help clarify the issue. Thanx to "PoohBear" for submitting this article. :) To play a DVD with your computer you need 3 things. First, you need a computer with enough "oomph" to play DVD video. This includes plenty of RAM and a fast processor. I have seen it done on systems with 256 megs of RAM and a 600 MHz processor, but that was all it would do. No multi-tasking. Better would be 512 megs of RAM or better, and at least a 1Ghz processor. Second, you need a DVD drive. You would be surprised at how many people try to play a DVD using a CD player. The lasers are different and they are not compatible. Third, you need software to play the DVD. You can play a DVD using Windows Media Player, but you will have to download and install a DVD codec. A codec is software for COmpressing/DECompressing video files. Different codec's process different types of files. To play DivX files you need the DivX codec. To play DVD files you need the DVD codec. Your DVD drive probably came with software..(codec)..and it's own "media player" for playing DVD's. It is likely compatible with Microsoft Media Player, so you can use either player as you wish. Note: When you install a DVD drive..or a DVD codec..you may find that it sets it's own 'media player' as the default player. Therefore, when you insert a DVD disc, an unfamiliar media player may appear. This may be the best overall choice..however.. if you prefer Windows Media Player, you can set the options in both players to make WMP the default player. "Third Party" software (other than what came with your DVD drive) is available. Two examples are PowerDVD and WinDVD, but there are others available for playing DVD. Remember, Windows Media Player will only play a DVD if a compatible Codec is installed. If you have a computer that is powerful enough to play a DVD and you have a DVD drive that you know is working and you have the software installed but you still can't view DVD, make sure you have the proper codec. Microsoft has codecs available for purchase.

You re right it is Windows Explorer.I went to device manager and right clicked on DVD Ram and there it showed uninstall so i did,,,It's still there but not working.

Has this computer been rebooted lately?

What, if anything, were you trying to do when you discovered the drive wasn't working? Was it working properly before it stopped working?

Have you tried reading more than one DVD/CD?

Have you installed any new software recently? If yes, what was it?

First let's first get the terminology correct to avoid confusion.

Windows Internet Explorer 9.0 is not Windows Explorer IE9 is a browser while Windows Explorer is a management utility within Windows itself.

Here I go trying to clear an issue up, and with my far from adequate typing skill all I do is possibly add to the cloudiness. My post is missing a period. So to make it perfectly clear the above post should have read;

Let's clarify a little more:

Internet Explorer is a browser, be it 7, 8, or 9.

Windows Explorer is a utility within Windows.

Windows is an operating system, be it XP, Vista, or 7.

Okay Now!

Here is my best guess as to your problem:
You didn't delete your drive because it is hardware and the only way to delete it is to physically remove it.

What you have done is you've removed the Driver for the hardware.

What you need to do is to find what and who manufactured the drive and then find a new driver for it.

For instance, my optical drive is a: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH15F ATA Device [Optical drive]

Now just for the heck of it, I put that info into a Google search and came up with this site: Driver-list

The driver for my drive is listed here and all I have to do is to download it and install it.

You can go to your device manager and click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what yours is and then TRY to run a search for a driver from there or you can come back here for more help.

I hope that this hasn't confused you even more and if it has .. Please post back.

When you did as justme4now suggested about looking for the driver from the device manager? Right click on the drive in the device manager and the drop down menu should give you a choice to update the driver or maybe install a driver if it's not there. If that doesn't work double click on the drive and click on the driver tab in the dialog box that opens. See if you can install it from there.

I found this on Microsoft's web site.

You didn't say what OS system you were using, (Windows 7, XP?) but this page has the solutions for both Vista and XP.

If you have windows 7, there is a link on the page for that.

If this doesn't work or updating from device manager doesn't work, you will have to do a Google search for a driver, using your drives model number.

Your driver should be on this page!

Make sure that you get the one for the correct OS. (Vista, Xp or Windows 7)

Make sure it is for the correct BIT. (32 or 64 BIT)

OK thanks. I can't get the driver right now but i want to know if not having it can damage my computer ? I can use the one on hubby's computer for now.

No, it wont damage your computer. Please post which version of windows you are using, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7??

When downloading the Windows 7 driver .. "Make sure" to also download the correct BIT on that page link!
(32 or 64 BIT)
