Not in my opinion. Even after the upgrades those are really limiting specs. Further, none of the operating systems you mentioned are being supported by Microsoft anymore, and newer ones can't run on that machine. You're talking about approximately $150 in parts, plus the labor to install, and, after the upgrades, something else could fail. You could take that money, add about $130 to it, and get a brand new HP or Acer netbook that will be up-to-date, run well, and last you much longer than that Thinkpad.

I hate to get rid of a device when it still works, and that was a great laptop 10 years ago, but with some stuff you finally have to pull the plug.

I should qualify what I just wrote, because I didn't deal with your comment on the possibility of using a laptop as a DVD player. That Thinkpad probably has a CD drive, but not a DVD drive, so the upgrade would do nothing for you there. On the other hand, netbooks are kept small by not having a CD/DVD drive built-in, so you would have to buy an external one (about $40) to plug in to a USB port, or spend a little more to get a larger laptop that had the CD/DVD player built-in. In any case, I still think you should not bother with trying to inject life into the Thinkpad.

I was thinking of a DVD player for long car trips,
which I take few of anymore. I didn't check it
for a DVD player; just a CD player.
I don't really have a lot of use for a laptop.
I just always wanted one. I have needed one a few times.
But it sure is hard to justify that much money.

Yeah Pooh, these laptops are selling and shipping working with some upgrades for between $120-130.(EBay)..as mentioned above, you are putting in far more than what its worth..Ive got an old Thinkpad 390 that I resurrected with used parts I found here and there that cost little or were free..If its just something to play with, no spend any big bucks...as for dvd players, they can be found for reasonably low prices every weekend in the fliers

I decided to go ahead and play with this laptop some.
I got a cheap hard drive off Ebay and stuck in it.
Formatted it and put XPhome on it and updated to SP3.
This laptop will do everything I wanted one for.
It may not be worth fixing, but a cheap laptop is better
than no laptop. And I can buy stuff a little at a time.
I'll save up a little and upgrade the RAM next.
Then I'll save up some more and get a new battery for it.
Before you know it, I'll have a laptop that suits my purposes.

What are those 3 buttons where the touch pad should be.
It doesn't have a touchpad. I have to use a mouse.

It would be a very good candidate for a good version of linux would run it much easier than xp and faster. My fave is Mepis.

There should be a little red button which controls the cursor above those 3 buttons. The three buttons are left click, centre click and right click like a mouse

I considered using linux, but I just grabbed the first
OS disk I could find. I've run XP on lesser computers.

I don't need a powerful laptop computer. If it will run
Open Office and do some light websurfing then it will be fine.
