Susie, I have searched & can't find any Avast on it. I also went into the folders. I just did a search on this one & there is quite a bit Norton leftover on it still. AVG is on too & was working when I stopped using this one. I hope to have another one Monday if everyone would just get well..I don't drive (never learned) & all my rides are truly sick. Cat, I think I will try the XP tonite. I do know it has a LOT of problems & need to be started over..it is not worth spending $150 to do that. Nite before last I was trying to fill out a form to order something.. it took over 30 minutes to do it.. The cursor kept freezing plus it wouldn't scroll without freezing. Some on here can vouch for all the problems I have had. If I can get it running I can at least check to see if there is anything else I want saved. I tried to keep things saved as I knew this day was coming. Yes I know now the APC is probably why it wouldn't turn on but I don't think that had anything to do with the other problems. The XP took about 20 minutes to reboot.. this 98 is very fast doing it. Thanks, Dar

Raven, the scan with F-Secure came up clean. Thanks, Mikie. I highlighted and deleted all the files that were from partition D. Then I highlighted the 4 files from C (all were dated May 2005)and clicked to restore. A pop up message said they were successfully restored, yet they still show up in the chest as infected files, even after a reboot. That I do not understand. I think I will send them to Alwil to be checked, since I am almost 100% sure they are not infected files. I followed the file path on each one and found them in the proper places, so I guess that means they were restored. Tomorrow I will run another scan with F-Secure, and if these files are, in fact, restored that should indicate if they are infected. I think I've tried to make a mountain from a molehill, but that's just the way I am, a stickler for details.

urlee, Like 'genes' and 'raven' said, you should not have more than one antivirus program running at the same time. If you plan on keeping Avast I would uninstall AVG either by using 'Programs/AVG/AVG uninstall' or 'Control Panel'. To answer your question: To disable AVG, right click on the AVG icon in the system tray (by the clock), and click on 'Quit AVG Control Center', that will shut down AVG. It will start up again however, if you should reboot your computer. To stop AVG from restarting on reboot go to the MS Config Utility, click 'Start', click 'Run', type in (msconfig) without the quotes and click 'OK'. In the 'System configuration utility' select the 'Startup' tab and deselect (uncheck) the box by 'avgcc' (avgcc.exe/startup). You will be asked to restart your computer, select 'Restart'. After your computer restarts you will get a 'nag' notification box that you have made changes to the Configuration Utility. 'Check' the box 'Do not show me this message again' and click ok. To have AVG start again with Windows go back into the Config Utility, recheck 'avgcc'. You will receive the same prompts again. Witz

I had the exact same problem when I renewed my Avast subscription 3 days ago. It says "Missing runtime error" Or something like that. Went to Staples and they messed with it for over an hour and couldn't fix it. Finally took it to a friend who is a computer geek and as soon as I told him about installing the Avast, he knew what it was. It has something to do with the Firewall of the new Avast. He had to reset it to allow things to work. I know nothing about computers but maybe that's enough info to help you.
